=============================================================

=== TOPIC ===

The Microsoft Kinect provides a cheap and robust depth sensor as an
off-the-shelf-product that opens a rich design space for mobile HCI
researchers. Tracking a user's body motion, pose and the position of each
limb is now possible this can help to create new interaction as well as
evaluation methods. The workshop on KINECTing Mobile Human Computer
Interaction is meant to explore how mobile devices and mobile interaction
can be enhanced through the capabilities of the Microsoft Kinect as well as
new experiences and Kinect-augmented services for mobile devices that
emerge from this new technology.

Besides a strong relation to the Kinect, topics of interest include but are
not limited to:

• Novel interaction techniques
• Spatial and proximity based interaction
• Ad-hoc created situated spaces
• Advanced mobile hardware prototypes
• Whole-Body Interaction in mobile contexts
• Advanced services based on position data of the Kinect
• Evaluation and documentation of mobile usability using the Kinect

We want to use the workshop as a starting point to discuss possible formats
and platforms for exchanging skeletal data captured during mobile usability
evaluations. The goal is to set a new standard for reproducible evaluation
techniques in mobile settings.

=== Workshop Format and Submissions ===

The workshop on KINECTing MobileHCI is a full-day workshop with an extended
thematic scope and aims to bring together researchers and practitioners
from academia and industry with multidisciplinary insights being explicitly
encouraged. We ask for papers (two-pages position-statement-paper or
four-pages research-paper) that address one or more of the research
questions mentioned above, or that describe findings that relate to these
research questions based on systems the authors have built.

We highly encourage bringing a demonstration of your prototype if available
and presenting it at the Workshop!

Papers should be formatted according to the standard HCI Archive format. (
http://www.mobilehci2011.org/sites/default/files/MobileHCI2011archivalformat_final_acmcopyright.docplease
remove the copyright notice). Papers should be submitted using the
electronic submission system available on the website (http://www.kmhci.com).
At least one author of an accepted paper is required to register for the
workshop.

Each paper will be reviewed by at least two members of an international
program committee. All accepted papers will be made available online on the
workshop website

Hello All,
Some time ago, I remember reading a webpage about ten evidence-based
heuristics that are an improved version of the ten Nielsen heuristics. I
remember that the webpage had both the original heuristics and the improved
ones listed on it, but I can't seem to find it any more. Does anyone by
chance have the URL for this? Best,
Chris Martin

Collaborative Networks in the Internet of ServicesRecent developments under the umbrella of Future Internet offer new concepts and mechanisms to support a new generation of advanced collaborative networks. Particularly relevant is the consolidation of the Internet of Services and its associated infrastructures and related concepts such as service ecologies and service parks. Complementarily, recent progress on Cyber Physical Systems induce new virtualization possibilities for resources and capabilities, leading to notions of Industrial Internet, Sensing Enterprise, Internet of Events, etc. Moving from services, provided by a single entity, to more complex or integrated multi-stakeholder services calls for new approaches in dynamic service composition aimed at effective support of the “collaboration” perspective. This is a fundamental step in reducing the gap between the notions of software service, technical service, and business service.Collaborative Networks not only benefit from such new possibilities, these provide some fundamental elements supporting the structural and behavioural models, value systems and value creation, and the business perspective of collaborative networks. On the other hand, development of the so-called Services Science adds clarification to the semantics of the service concept in which context synergies with collaborative networks need to be further explored. The accumulated body of empiric knowledge and the size of the involved research community in Collaborative Networks provide the basis for leveraging the potential of new concepts and mechanisms in addressing big societal challenges and consolidating the scientific discipline on “Collaborative Networks”. Such discipline is strongly multidisciplinary and thus PRO-VE Working Conference is designed to offer a major opportunity to mix contributions from Computer Science, Engineering, Economics, Managementl and Socio-Human communities. The main theme of PRO-VE’12 focuses thus on crucial aspects to empower Collaborative Networks as a main actor of change in society.
PRO-VE, as the most focused scientific / technical conference in the area, offers a major opportunity for the presentation and discussion of both latest research developments and industrial practice case studies. Following the IFIP international mission, the PRO-VE conference offers a forum for collaboration among different regions of the world. This conference continues a series of successful conferences of PRO-VE’99 (Porto, Portugal), PRO-VE 2000 (Florianópolis, Brazil), PRO-VE’02 (Sesimbra, Portugal), PRO-VE’03 (Lugano, Switzerland), PRO-VE’04 (Toulouse, France), PRO-VE’05 (Valencia, Spain), PRO-VE’06 (Helsinki, Finland), PRO-VE’07 (Guimarães, Portugal), PRO-VE’08 (Poznan, Poland), PRO-VE’09 (Thessaloniki, Greece), PRO-VE’10 (St. Etienne, France), and PRO-VE’11 (S. Paulo, Brazil).
TOPICS
A plurality of scientific communities in Computer Science, Engineering, Economics, Management and Socio-Human sciences are encouraged to submit. Both theoretical works and sound case studies are expected. The conference will include technical papers and discussion panels. Proposals for organizing associated events, namely by project consortia focused on the area of Collaborative Networks are welcome. * Future Internet – concepts and mechanisms- Internet of Services- Service infrastructures* Cloud Computing and Collaborative Networks- Cloud computing architectures in support of collaboration- Business approaches and models- Services ScienceModelling and formalization- Service ecologies and Service parks* Software service-oriented architecture- Service composition - Semantic service discovery* Collaborative Business Processes and Service Composition- Integrated services / value-added services- Business process and service composition* Collaborative Cyber Physical Systems- CPS Infrastructures- Sensing Enterprise and Internet of Events- Collaborative CPS societies* Behavioral issues and governance- Typologies of collaborative behaviours- Trust modelling and management- Risk and uncertainty management- Serious games in CN- Affective computing in CN* Collaborative Networks and Big Societal Challenges- Role of CNs in addressing big emerging challenges- Case studies and new directions* Application areas (examples)- Eco-Industrial Parks- Healthcare collaborative systems- Active Ageing Networks- Ambient Assisted Living networks- Distributed manufacturing networks- Educational networks- Transportation and mobility support networks- Collaborative e-government- Agribusiness networks- Disaster rescue networks
Acceptance of papers is based on the full paper (up to 8 pages). Each paper will be evaluated by three members of the International Program Committee. However, prospective authors should submit a short abstract in advance, in order to check if the proposed topic fits within the conference scope.

Get involved in UX research! Online Survey (available in english, german or french)

Hi Everyone,

As part of my PhD thesis, I am collecting responses to a questionnaire
survey on User eXperience. More than 100 Usability/UX researchers and
practitioners have already been invited to perform this exercise and most
of them agree on the fact that there is still a definite need for a
standardized definition of the term UX.

By sharing your views on UX, your participation in this survey will help
bringing the concept of UX to maturity.

Therefore, it would be a great help if you could participate and also
share it with your friends or colleagues working in the field of HCI,
design, marketing or IT engineering.
Please find below the description of the survey and the link to
participate.

Thank you very much for your support and co-operation!

--------------------

Get involved in UX research! Online survey: Towards a shared definition of
User eXperience
Available in english, german or french version.
Have you ever heard of the concept of User Experience (also called UX)?
Does its definition seem clear to you?
At present, despite its popularity among practitioners, it is a challenge
to reach a shared definition of UX by converging different understandings
about the meaning and scope of UX. Following a study by Law, Roto,
Vermeeren & Hassenzahl (2008), we are collecting responses to the
questionnaire from usability/UX researchers and practitioners.

Regardless of your profile and background get involved and help bringing
this concept to maturity by sharing your views on User eXperience !

Please answer the survey online:
- english: http://bit.ly/uxsurvey-en
- german: http://bit.ly/uxsurvey-de
- french: http://bit.ly/uxsurvey-fr

Many thanks for your support !

The standard these days is Basecamp. http://basecamphq.com/

Hi Kay,

Here is a similar question and answer I posted a while ago. It focuses on
graphic deliverables, but some of the tools may work for what you want:

QUESTION: Looking for a better way for clients to review and comment on our
work online

I’m envisioning a chat tool that would allow me to do the following:

• Display a Web page, graphic, or Flash animation on the Web.

• Allow a client to visually highlight part of it.

• Create a chat thread associated with the highlighted area.

• Support multiple chat threads for different highlighted areas.

• Spellcheck chat contents.

• Archive the chat thread.

Does anyone know of such a tool? It seems that Adobe CS4 has something built
in or there maybe something in an application lifecycle management (ALM)
tool like Rational Jazz.

ANSWERS: I found some tools that do exactly what I want. Front runners are:

proofHQ (http://www.proofhq.com/html/main-features.html,
http://www.appappeal.com/app/proofhq/)

Highly polished, works with or without Basecamp

Highly polished, works with or without Basecamp, Flash based

Cozimo (http://www.cozimo.com/, http://www.appappeal.com/app/cozimo/

Promising but I’ll need to dig deeper to see if it has all of what I need

These are similar but seem to be missing core requirements:

http://www.noteboxapp.com/

Seems to only support static files.

Seems not have chat support, only notes.

http://vyew.com/site

More for conferencing. Doesn’t seem to support chat associated with a
comment

Cannot really figure out if this is suitable without speaking to one of
their sales reps.

I would suggest

Conceptshare (http://www.conceptshare.com/)
Zyncro (http://www.zyncro.com/)
TeamBox (http://teambox.com/)
or of course GoogleDocs

Hi Kay,

Here is a similar question and answer I posted a while ago. It focuses on graphic deliverables, but some of the tools may work for what you want:

QUESTION: Looking for a better way for clients to review and comment on our work online

It seems that Adobe CS4 has something built in or there maybe something in an application lifecycle management (ALM) tool like Rational Jazz.

ANSWERS: I found some tools that do exactly what I want. Front runners are:

proofHQ (http://www.proofhq.com/html/main-features.html, http://www.appappeal.com/app/proofhq/)
Highly polished, works with or without Basecamp

VIGTA 2012 – First International Workshop on Visual Interfaces for Ground Truth Collection in Computer Vision Applications

Workshop at AVI2012 - Capri, Italy, May 21-25, 2012
http://vigta2012.dieei.unict.it/

  Overview
  ========
  The importance of having image/video database containing high quality ground truth annotations generated by humans for a variety of computer vision applications is recognized by the whole machine vision community. Indeed, one of the most significant efforts during the evaluation process is represented by the development of accurate truth and comparing this truth to the decision of image and video processing applications. For example, datasets with ground truth labels are necessary for supervised learning of object categories. However, the cost of providing labelled data, which implies asking a human to examine images and provide labels, becomes impractical as training sets grow. The computer vision community has mainly directed its attention to develop methods for collecting large scale datasets by exploiting the collaborative effort of a large population of annotators. Although there exist functional, task-oriented requirements for tools supporting ground truth labeling, the research still lacks in following human computer interaction paradigm to develop user-oriented tools. In fact, annotators, must be at the centre of such tools since the ground truth needs to be established by humans who, for example, on a video sequence of five minutes captured at 30 fps, have to annotate manually a total of 9000 frames. Therefore, tools for ground truth annotation must be user-oriented, providing advanced visual interfaces able to speed-up the process of ground truth creation by helping users, through the integration of computer vision methods and multi-users ground truth annotations, to finish the task in a reasonable amount of time with less effort.

  The workshop aims at bringing together practitioners and researchers both in computer vision and in HCI and in multimedia research to share ideas and experiences in designing and implementing visual interfaces for ground truth data generation, thus promoting interdisciplinary research between computer vision, HCI and multimedia research.

contain various links to related articles. But which related articles
are most relevant?

A PhD student of mine, Ricardo Kawase, tries to find this out with a
short evaluation. If you have 10 to 15 minutes to spare, it would be
great if you could participate.

Just follow the link and read the instructions:

I'm searching for works/projects involving automatic generation of web
or GUI interfaces from specifications/schema of data types or database
structure and would be grateful for any pointers or links you might be
able to share. I'm looking for things such as iTask
(http://dl.acm.org/citation.cfm?id=2050135.2050145) or SUPPLE
(http://www.cs.washington.edu/ai/supple/). If there is a better HCI
forum where I could direct my query, I would be appreciate knowing
about it as well.

Thanks very much!

                         http://events.declarative3d.org/Dec3D2012

     in conjunction with WWW2012, 21st International World Wide Web Conference (WWW2012)

                              16-20 April 2012, Lyon, France

                                     http://www2012.org

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Colleagues,

you are invited to submit your papers to the 1st International Workshop on Declarative 3D

for the Web Architecture, co-located with the WWW2012 conference. The workshop aims to

encourage researchers and practitioners from both the Web and 3D graphics communities to

meet and talk about an integration of interactive 3D graphics capabilities into the Web

technology stack in a declarative way.

=== Topics ===

Topics of interest for the workshop include, but are not limited to, the following:

* Declarative 3D Use-Cases and Requirements: Discussion of the use cases, where embedding 3D

data in HTML using declarative approach provides significant benefit; deduction of the

requirements for the D3D specification.

* Declarative 3D and DOM: Discussion of integration of 3D with existing and future W3C

standards, specifically: integration of high-level scene concepts; integration with client

and server side rendering services, 3D REST; integration with existing security aspects for

content delivery and visualization; content portability and platform independence.

* Declarative 3D in current web browsers: Exploring how the incorporation of declarative 3D

graphics can be done in currently popular web browsers (e.g., by using WebGL in WebKit or

Gecko); what are the possible difficulties?

* Semantics of 3D objects in DOM: Discussion of how descriptive 3D can be combined with

semantics. This includes topics such as querying and manipulation of graphical objects,

mash-up from several sources, integration of RDF technology, creation of useful APIs based

on web services etc

* Declarative 3D User Interface Issues: Novel interfaces and interaction methods for online

3D + HTML content; mobile 3D Web interfaces, interaction techniques; accessibility and

usability of 3D Web content.

=== Submissions ===

We seek three kinds of submissions:

* Full technical papers - should not exceed eight pages in length in ACM format;

* Short technical papers and position papers - up to four pages in ACM format;

* Demo descriptions - two-page description of the application in ACM format, ideally

accompanied with a link to a demo;

Submissions must be formatted using the ACM SIG Proceedings Templates. Please note that the

author list does not need to be anonymized, as we do not follow a double-blind review

process.

Submissions will be peer reviewed by at least three independent reviewers. Accepted papers

will be presented at the workshop and included in the workshop proceedings (published online

at CEUR-WS).

Please submit papers via EasyChair at http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=dec3d2012

=== Important Dates ===

* Submission deadline: 22nd February, 2012, 23:59 CET

* Notification of acceptance: 6th March, 2012

* Camera-ready versions of accepted papers: 22nd March, 2012

For many people, December is a month of giving and receiving presents.
Online stores such as Amazon help you to find the right presents by
recommending you items that you might like.

We would like to find out what you think of these recommendations. If
you have an Amazon account, please participate in this survey. It
doesn't take long (about 15 minutes), it's actually quite fun and you
might learn some new things.

Please click on the following link for the survey:

Participants needed for quick card sort - USD $50 Amazon Voucher Draw

(Apologies if you receive more than one of these.)

Some of you did a card sort for me a couple of months back. The results have been used in an article that is currently with the editor, so hopefully it will be available early next year.

In the meantime, I have another project on the same lines (fruit and vegetables) but it's a little bit longer. It should still only take between 10 and 15 minutes. Also, for reasons I cannot go into just yet, there are some very specific instructions (these are repeated on the web site):

1. If you were born in an ODD year, create a group called Green Vegetables. DO NOT create a group called Salad Vegetables or similar. Then follow the remaining instructions starting at 3, below.
2. If you were born in an EVEN year, create a group called Salad Vegetables. DO NOT create a group called Green Vegetables or similar. Then follow the remaining instructions starting at 3, below.
3. All groups (from steps 1 or 2 above and the others you are free to create) should have between 2 and 6 items.
4. No groups should be given Latin names - so avoid brassicas, alliums and so on.
5. No groups should be personal - so no 'I don't like these', 'I grow these at home', 'Yuck' (this is a real group name from a previous study!)

I will choose an email address at random from the results, so make sure your email address is correct. It will not be used for any other purpose. If your address is drawn and you have followed the instructions above you have won the draw. I will contact you to see what country you would like your gift voucher for.

The URL for the card sort project is http://bit.ly/vMQkwW

It will be open until Friday 16 December.

Measuring Challenge, Control and Goals in Different Video Game Genres

Dear Gamer,

I would like to invite you to participate in our anonymous survey
about video games and their attributes. This survey is part of a
research study hosted at DePaul University to determine a framework
for video games intrapersonal attributes. This is a follow up survey
from a previous one done two months ago. The attributes we are most
concerned with are challenge, control and goals. This survey in
particular would help us map those attributes to different game
genres. Please only respond if you are at least 18 years old and an
experienced video games player.

The survey is only 30 multiple choice questions so we appreciate your
participation and effort. At any point during or before the survey,
you can close it and your answers will not get recorded. Also, you are
not liable to answer any personal information because this is an
anonymous survey.

If you would like to respond to the survey, please go here:

Thank you for your time.

Realizing the UCD Method Exploration Tool (help needed)

Dear all,

In The Netherlands, at the Design for Usability project, we are developing a
User Centred Design Method Exploration Tool
<http://www.uselog.com/2011/11/realizing-ucd-method-exploration-tool.html> .
This tool is an online platform where user-centered design professionals can
explore and compare UCD methods in a fast an visual way. Detailed
information about each method is available, aimed at the execution of the
method.

The current state is that we have several prototypes, visualizing parts of
the interaction that we are looking for, of which some can be seen through
the link above. The design is mature to the extent that we can actually
start implementing, but we need funding for that.

I am sending you this e-mail because the UCD Method Exploration Tool is one
of the 24 nominees for TU Delft's Innovation Award
<http://tudelft.nl/en/cooperation/innovation-tu-delft/> , and to get to into
the final round of this competition it needs your vote
<http://enquete.tudelft.nl/nq.cfm?q=3acb7f5c-1a4b-d1cb-500d-3a3c1c0a8696>
(nr. 21, bottom of page). With the prize, we will be able to partly finance
the project. So, if you like the idea, please vote :-)

And help us to get more votes by spreading the word! Twitter, blog, email,
but get as many UCD professionals as possible to help us! When you do so,
you could refer to the blog post about the tool on Jasper van Kuijk's
<http://www.uselog.com/2011/11/realizing-ucd-method-exploration-tool.html>
website.

We're also on the lookout for experienced practitioners and academics who
would like to get involved in this project, for example by reviewing
prototypes or contributing and evaluating method descriptions. And - as is
probably clear - please also contact us if you have advice on how we could
fund our project.

Thank you in advance,

Tristan Weevers
