Agreed. We could, for sure. But IMHO we should be able to present working code,
not just plans. Especially hardcore developers want so see something working.
Our concepts are good, and also mostly proven and known to work. The interesting
part is how we solve all the fine points and how the system
behaves in practice, when set to action.

We have still some way to go, but I'm confident we'll make it. We had
a constant rate of progress in the past (well it would be desirable
to move faster and have more dev power, but at least we're getting
ahead).

Fully agreed. And indeed, the Git workshop was fun.

OOOps .. I completely missed the deadline and wanted to defer this
discussion for the next developer meeting.

I just asked in #Froscon, we may try to apply later, there is another
'call for exhibitors' deadline for a booth (may, 23th). So far there
are only 4 applications from other projects for rooms. There are still
rooms left I just got told!

Yesterday was KaLUG meeting where I meet with Benny. Some (non final)
conclusions we made:

Planning to go:
- Me and Benny will go to Froscon for sure.
- I'll book the cheap (just checked, 39Eur/night, Single room +
Breakfast) and still ok'ish Hotel we had last year ASAP. (last year
it was already booked out for the FrOSCon days, but we stayed the
   night earlier there)
- If anyone wants to stay there to contact me ASAP as well then I can
book a room for him/her too.

Ideas about what we could do:
- Deadline is over, we may try a late application, but we must first
decide what we want to do.
- Can we make an IRC meeting next days to discuss this, How about
   Thursday?
- We can alternatively apply for a booth.
- I think (from last years experience) that we can't staff a booth and
a devel room. We should apply for either. (except that a room has
double use for sleeping there at night, but the Hotel is fine too)
- We could do the git workshop again (It was successful and
   satisfying to me).
- Could we rig a Talk about the Lumiera architecture? I think possibly
not, there are too much loose ends not connected yet. OTOH this is
quite likely very interesting for Hardcore developers.
- Benny suggested to make a workshop with a bit broader scope about
the tools we use. I see some problems there as we can't cover all
adequately with and things might become a bit washed out.
- I am thinking a Developer meeting and non public Code integration
work will be overdue by the time of the Froscon. We may just apply
and meet on a developer room for ourself and try to get as much as
   possible developers there.
- Finally we can *just* meet there and enjoy the Conference this year
(Listening to the talks, contacts to other projects/people)

I am sure that we can do 'something' if we can get a developer room,
nevertheless, if we just miss it FrOSCon is still appealing and we
should meet there again anyways.

Christian

Morning Hermann & other Lumerites,
Well, to be honest, not really..

But an idea: what about extending the idea of last year of having a workshop on Git, to broadening our scope to not just encompass Git, rather __all__ tools being used to develop Lumiera. Examples that come immediately to mind are NoBug (yes, some people like it :=) ), but also the build process in Lumiera is also new, and does not have some of the insane things of automake. So presenting SCons as is used in the Lumiera project might be benificial: what do you think? What about buildrone? (Unfortunately, I'm a real newbie to SCons, but would be a good opportunity to at least learn to grunt in SCons!)

Here's a brainstorm:
---organisation of the GIT repo for Git
(Must be useful for other projects thinking about using Git)
   ---NoBug, the bug poison.
---Why and what of SCons v's why and not of automake
---Tools we use for reporting/processing bugs (well more about the tools we 'have', and less about the tools we 'use'.)
   ---...

I'm sure I'll think of a few more after sending this email off. We just should possibly concentrate more on the tools and less on the code itself.

What do you all think?

// English \\ (für eine Deutsche Version siehe unten)

Hello Lumiera Team,

we would like to invite you to take part in the seventh Free and Open
Source Software Conference (FrOSCon 2012).

FrOSCon is a two-day conference on Free Software and Open Source, which
takes place on August 25th/26th, 2012 at the University of Applied
Sciences Bonn-Rhein-Sieg, in St. Augustin near Bonn, Germany.

Main part of the conference is a comprehensive range of talks and
workshops. Furthermore, there is a large exhibition area, where projects
have the opportunity to present themselves and get in touch with users
and other developers. Moreover, we offer a few rooms for Free Software
projects to organize developer meetings or to present their own program.

We would be pleased if your project would like to contribute to this
year's FrOSCon and thus support the communication and exchange within
the Open Source and Free Software community. Depending on the kind of
your participation, there is different information available to you.

To sign up for a booth, please visit
https://callforexhibitors.froscon.org and register your project. Please
feel free to contact us for any questions at exhibitors-XR7Gx/IErD1AfugRpC6u6w< at >public.gmane.org
<mailto:exhibitors-XR7Gx/IErD1AfugRpC6u6w< at >public.gmane.org>. The registration for booths will be
open until May 23rd.

If your project wants to sign up for a developer room, please write a
proposal to projects-XR7Gx/IErD1AfugRpC6u6w< at >public.gmane.org <mailto:projects-XR7Gx/IErD1AfugRpC6u6w< at >public.gmane.org>. The
proposal should contain a short summary (1-2 paragraphs) of what you
plan to do and which special requirements you have. Since the demand for
developer rooms usually exceeds the number of rooms we can offer, we
will choose the projects which look the most promising to us based on
the submitted proposals. If you have questions concerning the developer
rooms, feel free to contact projects-XR7Gx/IErD1AfugRpC6u6w< at >public.gmane.org
<mailto:projects-XR7Gx/IErD1AfugRpC6u6w< at >public.gmane.org>. The deadline for the submission of
developer room proposals is April 30th.

Additionally our Call for Papers already started, we are looking forward
to your submissions of talks and workshops. You can register via
http://cfp.froscon.org/. For further information concerning the Call for
Papers take a look at http://www.froscon.de/en/program/call-for-papers/.
The Call for Papers will end on May 23rd, too.

We hope to meet you at FrOSCon in St. Augustin.

Kind regards,
The FrOSCon Team

Hallo Lumiera Team,

hiermit wollen wir dich herzlich einladen an der siebten Free and Open
Source Software Conference (FrOSCon 2012) teilzunehmen.

http://www.froscon.de/en/program/call-for-papers/. Der Call for Papers
wird am 23.05.2012 geschlossen.

Wenn ihr als Projekt einen Entwicklerraum haben möchtet, schreibt
einfach eine E-Mail an projects-XR7Gx/IErD1AfugRpC6u6w< at >public.gmane.org
<mailto:projects-XR7Gx/IErD1AfugRpC6u6w< at >public.gmane.org>.

https://callforexhibitors.froscon.org anmelden. Die Deadline der
Aussteller ist der 23. Mai 2012. Wenn ihr Fragen habt, dann könnt ihr
euch jederzeit an uns wenden (exhibitors-XR7Gx/IErD1AfugRpC6u6w< at >public.gmane.org
<mailto:exhibitors-XR7Gx/IErD1AfugRpC6u6w< at >public.gmane.org>).

Wir hoffen euch auf der FrOSCon zu sehen,

Beste Grüße,
Das FrOSCon Team

Hi Wouter,

for my part, I'm a bit at a loss what to announce for the coding news.
Actually, I did quite some work until about end of January. Then, for
several "real life" reasons, I had not much time left for Lumiera coding.
This was a temporary interruption though. I'm just about to pick up my
work and find my way back into the stuff I left half finished.

This stuff is somewhat involved. For an outsider, I can't just repeat
what I wrote for the last news reports: "Ichthyo is working on the player".
During that time, I just worked my way down more close to the point where
the player will drop off individual frame calculation jobs to the scheduler.
Cehteh promised to take on from that point, i.e. he will then care for the
scheduler, which accepts those jobs and invokes them in a timely fashion.

Unfortunately I can't announce any tangible feature to be finished. There
are lots of open ends. I've finished some components, but it would be hard
to describe them in one sentence. Well, at least the Git history and the
added notes in the TiddlyWiki show, that there was quite some progress
during this winter though.

Maybe Mike could add some notes about his contribution to the GUI framework.
While these, too, don't show up immediately as features to an end user,
I think his new contributions to GUI framework and library use are an
important step ahead.

Cheers,
Hermann V.

Yep, the way it is now.

No, no repitition. Only show the lower level links in the sidebar.

In that case it might be a good idea to simply split it up. Lumiera.org can point to a website designed for marketing purposes, while a subdomain contains the documentation and dev vault. We can still use the exact same structure that's in place right now, just not integrate the doc and dev vault sections into the top level website on Lumiera.org, and giving them a seperate place + lay-out.

Just a thought.

Hi Marc,

as Christian already pointed out, these are "packaging exercises"
to find out what we need to do for releases later. If that is clear
and settled, we'll try to automate these steps, using a bunch of
virtual machines.

Currently, I did these builds by hand (last spring, and I plan
to do a series of builds again soon). I used Debian and several
Ubuntu flavours. Next time I could also use a linux mint as
one of them.

Right now there is no pre-compiled version for Mint.
Since Mint is based on the Debian package manager, it wouldn't
be too hard to "bootstrap" and build those packages "the debian
way", based on the debian source package.

http://lumiera.org/debian/

But I take it that you just wanted to see what you can do with
Lumiera, and the answer is: nothing. You can admire a preliminary
GUI disconnected with the core, and you can watch some unit tests
running in a console :-P

Probably not worth the hassle compiling it yourself, unless you're
also interested in Lumiera coding.

Thanks for your interest in Lumiera!

Cheers

Hi Wouter,

thanks for bringing up this topic again. You're right, we should
try to push that effort ahead somehow. The Design made by Francesco
is just to nice for subjecting it to bit rot unused.

There are two kinds of complications with the structure.

(1) Core documentation and "other website stuff"
We wanted the core documentation to be in-tree with the source
code. The benefits of this seemed obvious at that time. You check
out one thing and have all you need to code right here on your
hard disk. And you can check in documentation with the same
commit as the corresponding code changes. Which gives another
user / dev an opportunity to notice the presence and the
location of the relevant pieces of documentation when
investigating a code change in the Git history.

The downside is that Git never forgets anything. Which means,
that any binary content (read images) leads to continued bloat
of the Repository. This led us to the conclusion, that we wanted
a separate tree for "the typical website stuff". If this repo
grows to 100MB, then be it (or ditch it and archive it and
    start out fresh).

Thus, currently, the /documentation/..." subtree of the
website structure is served from the /doc subdirectory of the
Source code tree and hooked in with a kind of symlink (plus
the necessary trickery on behalf of the navigation menu).

The obvious downside of this setup is that we get two different
Git repositories to back the website, and you just need to know
which one to consult for changing some context.

Corrently, only the "website" Git repo is branched for the
    staging / redesign.

Repo: lumiera-website, Branch: master -> top level LIVE website
Repo: lumiera-documentation Branch master -> documentation

Repo: lumiera-website, Branch: staging -> top level new design

(2) The discussion about the page orientation.
Last year, when we discussed that stuff, there was a large fraction
of people claiming that a "contemporary" website can't use this
sidebar navigation. They showed lots of examples how a website
perceived as "modern" needs to look. In most cases, there are
just (very few) navigation points arranged horizontally. If
at all. Information heavy content and structure seems to be
    perceived as "uncool" and limiting.

In this discussion, we (the core devs) made clear that basically
we don't care, as long as we can access and use our information heavy
content. Since we have already hundreds of pages several layers deep
and that section is expected to grow heavily, it is clear, that we
just need some kind of tree-like navigation (plus a cross-link
feature, which we're lacking currently, plus a detector for
broken links, which we're lacking too right now).

This lead to the compromise to design the first layer primary based
on marketing concerns and utilise a different, information content
centric layout for 90% of the content.

Ah ok. So your proposal would be to put the top level into a horizontal
bar, with the entries: Project, Documentation, Build/Install, Contribute,
Devs Vault.

Would these then also be repeated in the tree navigation?
Project, Documentation and Devs Vault are the roots of larger subtrees.

Some time ago, we had long, heavy (and very tiresome) discussions about
the general navigation structure, and backbone how to organise our
content. The result is the structure currently in use.

I must admit, that I am very happy with that structure. It works quite
smooth when working with the actual content. But, I also must admit
that it seemingly is not so optimally chosen from a marketing
POV. You need to understand the rationale, then it works well.

Kind regards,

Hermann V

Hi Lumi hackers,

time is fleeting.... Seems that next Wednesday is already the 2nd of April. OMG.

This would bee the usual time for a developer meeting. Is there anything
important to discuss right now? I on my part have nothing urgend to settle.
While generally I hoped to get more time, I didn't manage to do anything for
Lumiera the last weeks. Situation seems to become better next weeks.
Anyway, for my part, I just need to continue with coding at the point
I am right now, and have plenty of stuff just to do.

Any thoughts, suggestions, things to discuss?
If necessary, I could arrange just to be at home and in IRC on Wednesday evening.

Cheers,
Hermann Vosseler

quarterly news + website redesign status

Hi there!

We're behind again on the quarterly news update. If the devs can e-mail their story then I'll mix it into a new report.

Second question: is any work being done to complete the redesigned website? At staging.lumiera.org is a nearly-complete template from what I can see.
A while ago I delved into the GIT branch and found out that it was structured in a real confusing way. I drew a scheme to propose a simplification of the structure. I've attached it to this mail.

Apart from the technical structure we need to look at how we want third-level (and lower) pages to be accessed. The current solution in staging shows an alternate layout with the menu-tree on the left.
I personally think it's confusing to switch layout from section to section. I suggest using the sidebar to show lower-level navigation.
Regarding the design: Francesco: have you taken a look at the improvements to your design that I proposed a while ago? (That was: making it more compact and giving more attention to the text by giving it a solid white background).

Kind regards,

Ichthyo maintains a Lumiera depot.

Nevertheless, mind that Lumiera is in *no* way usable for editing
video yet. This is just an exercise for future packaging.
