I don't see a clean way without recompiling the app. Of course, for
those that are implemented via plugins, removing the plugin (or making
it non-executable on Unix-like platforms) should be enough... but there
is the risk that this plugin is used under the hood by another
plugin/script you use (even if this is not too likely for those of the
"decorative" kind).

I'd like to ask everyone to be cautious about the original mail until
further notice - the existence of Carolin Hillmann can't be verified via
the TU Berlin web site, and adding a mobile phone number to a public
mailing list is uncommon - and there has been no known attempt to
contact GIMP developers beforehand.

At least, I would have expected a &lt; at &gt;mms.tu-berlin.de -mail address.

Carolin, if this is a real project, please provide a bit more
information about its background.

Hi Simon!
That´s very friendly
of yours to reply in such detail. Now I feel like my first
email was a
little "clientish". Sorry for that. Gimp isn´t a private company.

I am
not of much help as a coder, but I can provide files and give
feedback
in testing.

Good news is, since you said you are working in
16bit tiff, when its done,
it will be huge. Tiff is an important bridge
for those of us converting from raw.

Other good news is, I was able to
load, work and save a 16bit png file, following
this
post:
http://libregraphicsworld.org/blog/entry/gimp-2.8-released-next-version-to-get-high-bit-depth-precision

The
file was converted from tiff to png with 'convert', and opens without
the
loose data notification. After opening, the precision is indeed set
to 16bit.

All the best!

Bruno

<pre>

Thank you Jonathan for this post, you described well what I'm feeling too.

For png pictures, I often open 10 or 15 small png pictures for edition, I just want to change some colors or add a little thing, and now when I overwrite or "export" to png (it's technically not an export because my original picture was also in this format), then the picture's name is lost, it's irritating when we need to work further on the pictures, because we can't find it any longer thanks to the window's name.

- I don't understand why the original filename, including the original extension are not kept in the window's name after an overwrite or an export.

- I don't understand why we can't overwrite more than once (otherwise I would just remap the ctrl+s to overwrite)
- I don't understand why the "overwrite" option is not active when we open an xcf file, it could just save the file in the same format as it was open, like for png, jpg or tiff.

I don't want to develop further, I just hope enough users will complain
so developpers will go back to the old behavior, or at least make this
"idiot-proof" save scheme an option which can be disabled for normal,
aware, user. It takes 5 minutes to read an explanation on how raster
images works (you can still redirect newcomers to
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JPEG#Effects_of_JPEG_compression ), it's a pity to affect the behavior of Gimp because of this.

Well, unfortunately it is not that easy. There is a certain API
available for the file-plugins that transfers the image data to the Gimp
core. That API was only prepared to accept 8 bit images. The transition
of the core to a wider range of data formats did not change the old API,
since we wanted to keep compatibility for the plugin (or all plugins
would have disappeared simultaneously).

Hence we had to invent a second set of API functions that support the
new data formats. However, this means that the plugins which want to
make use of the new data formats need to be changed to use the new API.
In a lot of cases this is quite easy and means less code in the plugins,
but the changes have to be done and it is real work.

Porting the p*m-Plugin (plug-ins/common/file-pnm.c) should be easy. The
file-format is as simple and straight-forward as it gets. If you want to
dabble with development and help with the progress of Gimp you are
welcome to take a shot at it. If you catch me in IRC (#gimp, nomis) I'll
be glad to give assistance.

<pre>Hi,
So after a bunch of package installing and compiling, I am successfully
running Gimp 2.9.1 from git, on debian wheezy.
The thing is, when I open a 16bit tiff, Gimp *still* pops up the "can't

Precision and change
to 16bit. But from what I understand, setting the file to 16bit *after*

Thanks much,

<pre>

Click the "filter" drop-down. If you added a folder of brushes into
~/.gimp-2.8/brushes/fancynewbrushes, then you should have a tag/button
called "fancynewbrushes" that you can click. This filters down the list
of brushes to only those that were in that folder (you can also manually
tag brushes if you want).

I don't understand. You first explain how you can delete some brushes,
then you say that it's impossible? (There's even a simpler way: just
right click and select the "delete" option.)

I can imagine a situation where deleting wouldn't be possible though: if
you installed the brush pack through a package manager, as the root user
(so it's installed in /usr/share/gimp/2.0/brushes/somename or
something). GIMP can't give you root permissions ;) so in that case,
what you should do is copy it over to your user directory,
~/.gimp-2.8/brushes/somename, uninstall it from the package manager, and
then you can start deleting individual brushes from either GIMP or the
folder.

<pre>Hello, my name is Alex Stegmann, and I've been using Gimp for sometime now.
It's a fantastic program, but I thought the area where it lacked the most
was the brushes. It only came with a few basic brushes, and you often had
to download extra packs for that something extra. This in itself wasn't a
huge deal, although if you had brush sets more like those of PaintTool SAI
or MyPaint, that would be really great. Those program don't have as much as
Gimp, but they have some really great brushes, which makes them fun to draw
in.

My bigger concerns is adding your own brushes to Gimp via imported brush
packs. While you say you integrate all files, the brush manager is lacking.
If I wish to add a few brush packs to see what they do, the brush list
quickly becomes clogged. You can't seem to delete brushes without going
back into the brushes folder which you first put them in, and then delete
the files. This also means if you like a few brushes in a pack, but the
rest of it is useless to you, then you have to have everything, or nothing.

There is a lot to be desired in terms of the brushes, and I hope you can
improve these soon. I stand by Gimp, even though people often call it a
watered down version of Photoshop, but Gimp 2.8 has been a huge
disappointment for me.

On a final note, when choosing a new brush, especially for the animated
texture brushes you include, I think it would be useful if you
automatically went to the brushes native size. This saves time and energy,
especially if you are testing out new brushes. MyPaint has this feature,
and I have found it incredibly useful. This also means I can just click the
brush a second time to reset it to the default settings.

I would very much like to see Gimp become an essential piece of software on
every digital artists computer, but for now it seems to be trailing behind.

<pre>Hallo Liebe Gimp-User,

*Wir repräsentieren ein Forschungsprojekt der Technischen Universität
Berlin.

[Gimp-user] set mode or opacity for multiple layers at once?

<pre>Is it possible to set the blending mode or the opacity settings for
multiple layers all at once? Ideally I'd like to select multiple layers
and change the settings for all of them at once, but I can't seem to figure
out a way to do this, so I think it doesn't exist?

Is this something other people would like to be able to do?
