*** Announcement ***

The ClamAV project is launching a new service called "Third Party web
interface". It will allow selected individuals/organizations to publish
ClamAV Virus Databases (CVD) through the ClamAV mirror network.

If you choose to publish your signatures through our Third Party
web interface you will benefit from the following:

- before publishing the signatures, we will test them for
false positives against our false positive file collection.
- before publishing the signatures, we'll verify that the latest two
major versions of ClamAV can load them correctly.
- the signatures will be digitally signed and packaged into a single
 .cvd compressed file.
- there will be no ".UNOFFICIAL" suffix in the detection names.
- a custom prefix will be added to the detection names, identifying the
 organization which published the signature.
- updates will be distributed both as full CVD files and cdiff
incremental updates. Users will benefit from lower network traffic.
- the .cvd and .cdiff files will be distributed through the
 ClamAV mirror network.
- the service should result in faster remediation of false positives.
- ClamAV users will be able to download the third party databases
using freshclam, by adding a single line to freshclam.conf, what
should make signature maintenance significantly easier.

The service is still in beta, you are welcome to contact Luca Gibelli
&lt;luca*clamav.net&gt; if you intend to join the beta program.

We especially welcome those who already distribute their own unofficial
signatures to join. A list of databases distributed by the new service
will be available at http://www.clamav.net/download/cvd/3rdparty

We will be happy to answer any questions you might have.

<pre>Dear users,

ClamAV versions older than 0.96.4 are affected by a bug in the logical
signature parser, which can make them load and mishandle signatures
designed for newer engines. As a result, these versions may generate
incorrect detections, leading to false positive alerts.

If you're running one of these releases, we strongly advise to upgrade it.

<pre>Dear ClamAV users,

about 15 mins ago we released daily.cvd 10938. This update apparently
caused a segmentation fault in all ClamAV versions older than 0.96
on 32 bit systems.

We just released daily.cvd 10939 which removes the faulty signature and
we have taken measures to ensure that this problem won't happen again.

We recommend using a monitor tool like clamdwatch or clamdmon to
automatically restart clamd whenever it dies.

If you are already using a similar solution, your clamd will be
restarted automatically as soon as freshclam downloads the daily.cvd
10939 update.

We apologise for the inconvenience.

Dear ClamAV users,

this is a reminder that starting from 15 April 2010 our CVD will contain
a special signature which disables all clamd installations older than

We would like to keep on supporting all old versions of our engine, but
unfortunately this is no longer possible without causing a disservice to
people running a recent release of ClamAV.

<pre>
Dear ClamAV users,

ClamAV 0.96 introduces new malware detection mechanisms and other
significant improvements to the scan engine. The key features of
ClamAV 0.96rc2 include:

- The Bytecode Interpreter: the interpreter built into LibClamAV allows
the signature writers to create and distribute very complex detection
routines and remotely enhance the scanner's functionality

- Heuristic improvements: improve the PE heuristics detection engine by
adding support of bogus icons and fake PE header information. In a
nutshell, ClamAV can now detect malware that tries to disguise itself
as a harmless application by using the most common Windows program
icons.

- Signature Improvements: logical signature improvements to allow more
detailed matching and referencing groups of signatures. Additionally,
improvements to wildcard matching on word boundaries and newlines.

- Support for new archives: 7zip, InstallShield and CPIO. LibClamAV
can now transparently unpack and inspect their contents.

- Support for new executable file formats: 64-bit ELF files and OS X
Universal Binaries with Mach-O files. Additionally, the PE module
can now decompress and inspect executables packed with UPX 3.0.

- Support for DazukoFS in clamd

- Performance improvements: overall performance improvements and
memory optimizations for a better overall resource utilization
experience.

- Native Windows Support: ClamAV will now build natively under
Visual Studio. This will allow 3rd Party application developers on
Windows to easily integrate LibClamAV into their applications.

The complete list of changes is available in the ChangeLog file. For

Clamav 0.96 RC2 - win32 support

<pre>ClamAV 0.96-rc2 includes preliminary windows support.

Preliminary means that, at this point, all the libraries and the tools
are verified to build without errors, to execute and to pass basic
checks like loading and updating the database, detection of test files,
etc. The code was however not tested in a production environment.

We encourage all the interested users to try the software and report
bugs on our bugzilla. As usual, the more the testing, the quicker the
bugs get uncovered and fixed.
Feel also free to open feature enhancement requests, especially if you
can provide a working patch.

As soon as the code will prove stable, it will be also included in the
ClamAV for Windows software to augment the scan effectiveness and to
allow offline virus scanning.

If you wish to try ClamAV 0.96-rc2 on windows you can build it from
sources (see win32/README for details) or you can use the binaries found
at http://sourceforge.net/projects/clamav/files/clamav/win32/

<pre>Dear ClamAV users,

this is the second release candidate for ClamAV 0.96.

In this version, we introduce new malware detection mechanisms and other
significant improvements to the scan engine.

In a
nutshell, ClamAV can now detect malware that tries to disguise itself
as a harmless application by using the most common Windows program icons.

- Performance improvements: overall performance improvements and memory
optimizations for a better overall resource utilization experience.

- Native Windows Support: ClamAV will now build natively under Visual
Studio. This will allow 3rd Party application developers on Windows
to easily integrate LibClamAV into their applications.

<pre>Hello,

0.96rc1 introduces support for Personal stats.

It's now possible to view a chart of the amount of malware detected by
your ClamAV installation and generate a RSS feed with the most common
malware detected by your ClamAV installation.

In order to enable Personal stats you must:

- install 0.96rc1 or later version
- go to http://www.stats.clamav.net
- login using your favourite OpenID
- click on "Add a new host" to obtain an HostID
- copy&amp;paste the HostID to your freshclam.conf

For a detailed explanation, please visit
http://wiki.clamav.net/bin/view/Main/ClamStats

The service is still in beta, please feel free to report any problems to
our bugzilla, using the appropriate product/component combination.

Regards,
