The Apache OpenOffice Project Management Committee is pleased to
announce the availability of our new Announcement mailing list. This
is a low-volume list which will be used to announce the availability
of OpenOffice betas and releases, to issue security bulletins, and to
report similar relevant information. This is not a discussion list.
It will be used only for authoritative announcements regarding Apache
OpenOffice.

We encourage all OpenOffice users and other interested parties to
subscribe to this list by following these steps:

1) Send an email to: ooo-announce-subscribe< at >incubator.apache.org

2) Wait a few minutes and then check your inbox for a confirmation email.

3) Respond to the confirmation email

(If you ever want to unsubscribe, send an email to:
ooo-announce-unsubscribe< at >incubator.apache.org and respond to the
confirmation email.)

More information on this list, and other Apache OpenOffice project
lists can be found here:

*OpenOffice.org Site is moving to New Infrastructure*

We are preparing the move of the OpenOffice.org main site to a new
infrastructure. Project Kenai provides the framework that is already the
basis for sites like kenai.com <http://kenai.com>, odftoolkit.org
<http://odftoolkit.org> and major parts of netbeans.org
<http://netbeans.org> andjava.net <http://java.net>.

A staging site <http://testopenoffice.org> allows a preliminary insight.

The OpenOffice.org Community Announces the Release of OpenOffice.org 3.3

*OpenOffice.org 3.3 Ready for Download*

--Free Productivity Suite Used by More than 100 Million Now Includes
Enterprise Features--

Hamburg, Germany, 26 January 2011--- The OpenOffice.org Project today
announces the release of OpenOffice.org 3.3, which includes features and
improvements addressing current and future user requirements, regardless
of scale. Stepping into a new arena, OpenOffice.org 3.3 brings to
enterprise users, both in public and private sectors, improved
compatibility with Microsoft Office, spreadsheet and presentation
enhancements, and superior security and collaboration options. A full
list of what the Project's Community have accomplished can be found at
<http://www.openoffice.org/dev_docs/features/3.3/>.

OpenOffice.org 3.3 marks a milestone in the suite's maturation. Ten
years after the Project was initiated, the suite has grown from being
the “free alternative” to the default and even preferred choice for the
more than one hundred million who have come to value the quality,
reliability, and extensibility of the application, as well as the
flexibility given by the the suite's file format, the OpenDocument
Format (ODF), the leading open standard for office documents.

To download OpenOffice.org 3.3 for free: <http://download.openoffice.org/>

There is a lot that is new and enhanced in OpenOffice.org 3.3. But not
least, it is also simply faster, both in startup time and in overall
operation. Some of the of new elements include:
* embedded standard PDF fonts
* new document security and collaboration options
* provisions for one million rows in a spreadsheet
* new options for CSV (Comma Separated Value) import in Calc
* ability to insert drawing objects in Charts
* improved slide layout handling in Impress
* a common search toolbar

Andrew Southworth, Network Coordinator, Canadian Labour Congress, wrote,
“It's never been just about the savings. The Canadian Labour Congress
selected OpenOffice.org in support of what it does and how it goes about
doing it. It's the full support of the ODF that frees us from committing
to any one vendor. And it's the extensions, the enterprise elements and
the open-source code that gives all those we represent and work with in
Canada, from schools to hospitals to libraries to private sector
corporations the freedom of real productivity — without being locked
into a particular company's vision of how you should work. Saving money
on software is great. But OpenOffice.org, with its support of the ODF,
is more than about the bottom line. It's about the freedom to choose the
best.”

A full guide to new features is available at
<http://www.openoffice.org/dev_docs/features/3.3/>. The security
bulletin with full details of the potential vulnerabilities fixed is at
<http://www.openoffice.org/security/bulletin.html>.

OpenOffice.org is fully supported by the worldwide Community and by
professional companies, both large and small. Oracle proudly continues
the sponsorship of the Project building the application and welcomes
contributions from all.

    10^th Anniversary of OpenOffice.org

Ten years ago, on 13 October 2000, Sun released the source code to
StarOffice under open-source licenses. Formidable in size and complexity
and positioned against a seemingly overwhelmingly dominant competitor,
OpenOffice.orgBirthday Cake <http://www.openoffice.org> was seen as at
best, foolish, at worse, boring, fit only for office drones. Browsers,
it was said, have more fun.
But we, the OpenOffice.org project community, showed these skeptics to
be wrong. We showed the world that a free office productivity suite
using open standards, especially what later came to be known as the
OpenDocument Format (ODF), is more desirable, more powerful, and more
transformative than any browser could be. We, the OpenOffice.org project
community, gave the world a set of tools that allows all to participate
as equals in the fields of commerce, science, education, government, to
name but a few.
We have given the world the tools to do things and to work together.
With OpenOffice.org, people produce - and their productions are theirs
to keep and do with as they will. That is real freedom.

It is a freedom that today perhaps 100 million people enjoy. In some
regions, our product's usage is greater than 20 percent of the office
suite userbase. How have we done this? And without spending the expected
billions on advertising and other marketing efforts? To a great extent,
OpenOffice.org, the application made by us, the community, sells itself,
and its good news is spread through word of mouth, not via billboards
and the like. Its professional quality and performance is tremendously
persuasive. OpenOffice.org works on all platforms and in over a hundred
languages, and perhaps most important, it also works well with other
suites: our code and our use of the ODF means there is no vendor
lock-in. Users, from those in government offices to individuals at home,
are free to choose what is best for them without the anxiety they'll be
stuck with something they do not much like but costs a lot.

They have chosen OpenOffice.org, and we are sure they will continue to
do so in even greater numbers over the next ten years. They choose it
today it not simply because it costs them nothing to download from our
site, but because of its professional quality and flexibility - as well
as its reassuring consistency. Over the last ten years, we have
regularly released small and large versions incorporating new features,
functionality, and design, all tested and qualified for any user
environment. This fall, we are releasing OpenOffice.org 3.3, and the
beta is available for community testing. Expect more releases-and also a
lot more extensions.

With extensions, there is virtually no limit to what the application can
do, and every day the community makes more available under a variety of
licenses. These address individual, as well as enterprise, needs.
Support, services, and training, offered by Oracle and other large and
small companies, is globally available in a host of languages; these all
complement the free community support and constitute a portion of the
large and growing OpenOffice.org ecosystem.
And our momentum is building, as the size and complexity of the
community contributing to the project grows and as more see in
OpenOffice.org a future they want to be part of. It's a future of
freedom that we commit to, as a community that includes Oracle as well
other enterprises, and countless thousands of independent contributors.

Our first ten years have proven the strength of our vision and
technology against every imaginable challenge; the next - well, who can
say? Only this: we commit to making the tools of productivity, growing
the community, and improving the product - open to all to inspect, use,
improve, distribute, and we invite the world to join us in our commitment.

Trond's: Defining Open standards

I have met those who claim defining open standards is next to impossible

OpenOffice.org Community announces The Document Foundation

OpenOffice.org Community announces The Document Foundation

The community of volunteers developing and promoting OpenOffice.org sets up an independent Foundation to drive the further growth of the project

The Internet, September 28, 2010 - The community of volunteers who develop and promote OpenOffice.org, the leading free office software, announce a major change in the project’s structure. After ten years’ successful growth with Sun Microsystems as founding and principle sponsor, the project launches an independent foundation called "The Document Foundation", to fulfil the promise of independence written in the original charter.

The Foundation will be the cornerstone of a new ecosystem where individuals and organisations can contribute to and benefit from the availability of a truly free office suite. It will generate increased competition and choice for the benefit of customers and drive innovation in the office suite market. From now on, the OpenOffice.org community will be known as "The Document Foundation".

Oracle, who acquired OpenOffice.org assets as a result of its acquisition of Sun Microsystems, has been invited to become a member of the new Foundation, and donate the brand the community has grown during the past ten years. Pending this decision, the brand "LibreOffice" has been chosen for the software going forward.

The Document Foundation is the result of a collective effort by leading independent members of the OpenOffice.org community, including several project leads and key members of the Community Council. It will be led initially by a Steering Committee of developers and national language projects managers. The Foundation aims to lower the barrier of adoption for both users and developers, to make LibreOffice the most accessible office suite ever.

The Foundation will coordinate and oversee the development of LibreOffice, which is available in beta version at the placeholder site: http://www.libreoffice.org. Developers are invited to join the project and contribute to the code in the new friendly and open environment, to shape the future of office productivity suites alongside contributors who translate, test, document, support, and promote the software.

Speaking for the group of volunteers, Sophie Gautier - a veteran of the community and the former maintainer of the French speaking language project - has declared: "We believe that the Foundation is a key step for the evolution of the free office suite, as it liberates the development of the code and the evolution of the project from the constraints represented by the commercial interests of a single company. Free software advocates around the world have the extraordinary opportunity of joining the group of founding members today, to write a completely new chapter in the history of FLOSS".

FSF President Richard Stallman welcomed LibreOffice release and it's stated policy of only recommending free software. "I'm very pleased that the Document Foundation will not recommend nonfree add-ons, since they are the main freedom problem of the current OpenOffice.org. I hope that the LibreOffice developers and the Oracle-employed developers of OpenOffice will be able to cooperate on development of the body of the code".

"The Document Foundation supports the Open Document Format, and is keen to work at OASIS to the next evolution of the ISO standard", says Charles Schulz, member of the Community Council and lead of the Native Language Confederation. "The Document Foundation brings to the table the point of view of developers, supporters and users, and this might accelerate the adoption process of ODF at government and enterprise level".

Chris DiBona, Open Source Programs Manager at Google, Inc., has commented: "The creation of The Document Foundation is a great step forward in encouraging further development of open source office suites. Having a level playing field for all contributors is fundamental in creating a broad and active community around an open source software project. Google is proud to be a supporter of The Document Foundation and participate in the project".

"Viva la LibreOffice", said Guy Lunardi, product management Director at Novell. "We look forward to working with the Document Foundation to help develop a solid open source document software offering. Ultimately, we envision LibreOffice do for the office productivity market what Mozilla Firefox has done for browsers".

Jan Wildeboer, EMEA Open Source Affairs at Red Hat, has commented: "All over the world, users, companies and governments are moving to innovative technology solutions based on Open Standards. Red Hat is proud to join this effort".

Mark Shuttleworth, founder and major shareholder of Canonical, the makers of Ubuntu, has declared: "Office productivity software is a critical component of the free software desktop, and the Ubuntu Project will be pleased to ship LibreOffice from The Document Foundation in future releases of Ubuntu. The Document Foundation's stewardship of LibreOffice provides Ubuntu developers an effective forum for collaboration around the code that makes Ubuntu an effective solution for the desktop in office environments".

"The Open Source Initiative has observed a trend back towards open collaborative communities for open source software", said Simon Phipps, a Director of the Open Source Initiative. "We welcome The Document Foundation initiative and look forward to the innovation it is able to drive with a truly open community gathered around a free software commons, in the spirit of the best of open source software".

"We welcome the LibreOffice project to the free software community as we believe there is a great opportunity for them to enrich the free desktop experience." says Stormy Peters, Executive Director of the GNOME Foundation. "Over the years the GNOME community has been supportive of OpenOffice together with applications in the GNOME Office suite, such as Gnumeric, GnuCash and Abiword. As LibreOffice joins the free software community, we believe that free desktop users will benefit from a rich set of choices."

Patrick Luby, Chief Engineer of NeoOffice says "I am happy to see a new, independent LibreOffice foundation to continue creating an office suite with enhanced features, pushing OpenOffice.org in new, exciting directions". Ed Peterlin, Chief Visionary at NeoOffice says "I am excited we will be able to continue bringing excellent features from LibreOffice to the Mac platform. In the future I also hope to extend our web based collaboration tools to support LibreOffice users on all platforms".

Chris Halls, UK Managing Director of Credativ, an independent consulting and services company specialising in the development, implementation and support of open source solutions: "Welcomes the foundation as an opportunity to provide a new focus for the community contributors and allow them to move the project forward together. In our business, we support thousands of office desktops in many different environments. It is vital that the feedback and code that we can contribute as part of our day to day work can flow easily into the project".

"The creation of The Document Foundation is in line with the vision BrOffice.org - Projeto Brasil has for the Brazilian OpenOffice.org community. Our country already has a large investment in the Open Document Format and the software tools fully suporting it. BrOffice.org and The Document Foundation share the same values and objectives and we are more than happy to be part of it.”, says Claudio Filho, Chairman of the BrOffice.org NGO of Brazil.

The Norwegian foundation "Åpne kontorprogram på norsk" ("Open Office Suites In Norwegian") is responsible for the Norwegian translation of OpenOffice.org, and for promoting OpenOffice.org in Norway. So far the Norwegian project has been administered and financed mainly by counties and municipalities, but recently the foundation has started a process for getting commercial companies more actively involved. We realise the need for a more substantial commercial participation to establish a long-term sustainable project. Our foundation notes that the other Nordic countries, a majority of the European countries, as well as a range of worldwide big companies like Google, Novell, Canonical and Red Hat are now cooperating with The Document Foundation. We believe this is the right way forward also for Norway. A cooperation with The Document Foundation will make it easier to create more innovative and user-friendly solutions integrated with the LibreOffice suite. Eliminating license barriers and obtaining easy access to source code and standards will facilitate further development of related and integrated surrounding products.

OpenOffice.org HackFest 2010

Dear OOo hackers,

the OOoCon just ended, and we realize how little time we can spend
together face2face each year. To properly fix that problem, we hereby
announce the next event around OpenOffice.org - a HackFest in Hamburg,
specifically targeted to developers, to give all of us more face time &
collectively work on the code.

The OpenOffice.org HackFest will take place on the weekend of November
6./7. 2010 in the "Attraktor" in Hamburg, and a tentative program could
look like this:

     * Friday night - beer & fun, warming up
     * Saturday morning - Intro talks, Hands-on sessions
     * Saturday afternoon/night - collective hacking, bug fixing
     * Sunday morning - wrap-up, review, document

For those who are in need for a bursary, we have a limited travel
funding budget available. For sleeping, couchsurfing at the organizers
is available. Be aware that would be in an unheated loft, so bringing a
sleeping mat and a good sleeping bag would be essential. For more
comfortable reasonably priced acommodations see the wiki page at
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Sleeping_in_Hamburg

We look forward to meet you there, stay tuned for further announcements
around programme and sponsoring! To register yourself, just drop a short
note to hackfest< at >openoffice.org and we'll follow up with further
information soon.

For more information about the HackFest, please visit our website at
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Hackfest2010

Information about the location is available at
http://wiki.attraktor.org/index.php/Mex

Faithfully, your HackFest organizers

OpenOffice.org Celebrates Tenth Anniversary at OOoCon in Budapest

OpenOffice.org Celebrates Tenth Anniversary at OOoCon in Budapest

The OpenOffice.org Community is turning ten years of age. Launching the
celebration of a decade of open and free office productivity, the
project's annual conference will take place in the city of Budapest from
August 31 - September 3. Organized by the local community, supported by
major sponsors and filled with life by a highly engaged, vivid
community, the OpenOffice.org Conference (OOoCon) is the premier event
for all those interested in OpenOffice.org development, OpenDocument
technology and the future of free office software.

Since OpenOffice.org was created in 2000, the community behind the
software has shaped a new era of open and free office productivity and
is responsible for the creation and adoption of open standards. With
studies showing more than 20 percent market share, coupled with an
increasing number of governments, enterprises and private end-users
taking advantage of OpenOffice.org technology, this year's conference
will not only be our annual gathering for developers, adopters,
enthusiasts and evangelists, but also the start to well-earned
celebrations in local communities around the world.

At the event, attendees will find:
     * More than 100 speakers will present their thoughts and visions in
four parallel sessions.
     * An ODF 1.2 Interop Demo. Hosted by OASIS, the international open
standards consortium, the ODF 1.2 Interop will showcase applications
processing ODF documents on the desktop, in the cloud and on mobile devices.
     * More than 80 presentations will show the variety of the community
and highlight worldwide success stories.

"Our team has been working very hard to make this anniversary conference
the best OOoCon ever", says Péter Szakál from Open SKM, the team lead
for the Budapest organizational committee in charge of hosting the
event. "With the help of our sponsors, and with the support of not only
the local community, but the worldwide project, we're looking forward to
an extraordinary event in the capital of Hungary. Framed by many
community events, we're confident that the OpenOffice.org Conference
2010 will be a memorable event for everyone."

"For 10 years, OpenOffice.org has powered millions of users around the
world with an award-winning, easy-to-use office productivity suite,"
said Michael Bemmer, vice president of Oracle Office. "At Oracle, we are
proud to be the primary contributor to OpenOffice.org, as well as a
Platinum sponsor of this year's OpenOffice.org conference and we eagerly
look to passing yet more milestones."

Today, OpenOffice.org is the major open source office suite and one of
the largest open source projects worldwide with
     * over 43 million downloads of its current 3.2 version
     * more than 300 million downloads since the project's creation in 2000
     * support for all major platforms
     * 10 years of community experience
     * more than 90 languages available

This year's OpenOffice.org Conference takes place from August 31 -
September 3, at the Central European University in Budapest, with the
plenary session being held at the Hungarian Parliament. The event is
organized by ODFA Hungary, a nonprofit organization, with support from
sponsors IBM, Multiracio, Oracle and in joint cooperation with the
worldwide OpenOffice.org community.

Registration is open until the end of August, and all participants are
encouraged to register online at http://www.ooocon.org

volunteer and sponsored contributors, the OpenOffice.org community has
created what is widely regarded as the most important open source
project in the world today. The OpenOffice.org community acknowledges
generous sponsorship from a number of companies, including Oracle, the
primary contributor.

About the OpenOffice.org Conference

OpenOffice.org 3.2.1 released

The OpenOffice.org Community today announces the availability of
OpenOffice.org 3.2.1, the newest version of the world's major free and
open productivity suite.

OpenOffice.org 3.2.1 is a so-called micro release that comes with
bugfixes and improvements, with no new features being introduced. This
release also fixes security issues, so we recommend everyone to upgrade
to the new version as soon as possible.

This version is also the first one to be released with the project's new
main sponsor, Oracle, and comes with a refreshed logo and splash screen [1].

"The OpenOffice.org Community is in the year of its 10th anniversary. We
look forward to working together with joint efforts of a worldwide
community, on one of the world's largest open source projects,
delivering free software based on true open standards", says Florian
Effenberger, Marketing Project Lead of OpenOffice.org. He adds: "With
the start of the Branding Initiative [2], the ongoing Project
Renaissance [3] and with the recently-announced Summer Internship
Programme [4], the OpenOffice.org community invites everyone to
contribute to our efforts of improving the digital future."

According to OpenOffice.org's usual release cycle, the next feature
release of OpenOffice.org will be version 3.3, and is expected for
autumn 2010.

The Community celebrates its 10th anniversary this year at the annual
OOoCon [5], to be held in Budapest, Hungary, from August 31 to September
3. The Community invites all to join us in this lovely and dynamic
capital city, which was chosen by the popular vote among many global
contenders.

OpenOffice.org 3.2.1 is available in many languages for all major
platforms at http://download.openoffice.org

Further details on the security fixes will be announced in a few days on
our security bulletin website. [6]
