<pre>Hi Jerzy:

As it is not an official release we haven't provided much info on the
new testing version.

Installation goes like this:

Insert your usb drive and then as root type:

fdisk -l

This will list all your drives including your flash drive. Take note
of which partition it has been mounted in. Unmount the drive:

umount /dev/sd*

Replace sd* with the partition where the usb was mounted. It is very
important to have the correct partition here to avoid formating other
drive. In my pc for example, usb usually mounts automatically at
/dev/sdg so it is difficult to confuse because hard drives are mounted
at /dev/sda and /dev/sdb

Then, copy the iso (also as root):

dd if=nameoftheisofie.iso of=/dev/sd*

This will erase previous data of your flash drive. Of course, replace
nameoftheiso.iso with the name of the image and sd* with your device.

Another important thing is that Hybrid images do not have support for
persistent mode. I might say this is by definition. Neither Debian's
hybrid images have support for it.
On the other hand, usb-only images have this support but you should
make an extra partition and boot with the "persistent" flag.

There is a tutorial on musix's wiki about usb images:

http://www.musix.org.ar/wiki/index.php?title=Musix2.0-USB-usage

Regarding future versions of Musix, there are plans for making usb
images and even a low-size cd version.

Please, tell us if you need more help.

Regards,
Ariel.

It's a pity you had problems with USB install. I got to install from one of
the last usb images, so maybe it's an issue with hardware and/or drivers.

We're currently working on a new Beta. We would provide the information to
download as soon as we finish some stuff before and make it available. Then
we'll try to help you if you had any problems, we would be really
appreciate your feedback.

We thank you for your interest and help.

<pre>Dear Ariel

Thanks a lot for your kind information.
I am very interested to try the beta version of Musix 3.
Consequently I have downloaded both versions of Musix 3, ie Beta USB.img and
Testing hybrid.iso.
Much to my regret I was unable to install any to the USB flash drive.
It seems my permanent weakness how to get Musix installed on a USB drive and
if at all succeeded then installation was without persistent mode?!
In the meantime I have found that other Linux distributions had much
improved/solved this problem and specially Debian and Knoppix.
Since Musix was also projected on Debian source I wonder whether a similar
solution could be included in the new version of Musix 3.

Your kind help and assistance will be much appreciated.

Wishing You and all the Staff very nice Christmas Holidays!

Kind regards

Jerzy

I've written detailed instructions to make extra languages available
by default at boot time in musix 2.

After following these steps you will be able to boot in polish and
repeat the instructions to test the new menu.

Please ask if you encounter any issue,

Best,
Ariel.

Maybe the new menu was different but in english. That's because I
forgot one important step involving locales, my mistake.

The idea is that the script automatically translates the menu to the
current locale language. By default musix starts in spanish, english,
portuguese or french (these are the ones available in the boot menu).
So we need Musix to start in polish to have your menu translated in
that language.

The steps to achieve this are not difficult but involve a bit of more
of command line editing.

Do you have your system in english or in polish? If you have in
english (in icewm you can verify this easier *) I'll give you
instructions to make polish language available at boot time.

* another way to verify your locale configuration is by typing in a terminal:

locale

if you see pl_PL.UTF-8 UTF-8 your system is in polish, otherwise we
need to change it.

I'm not really experienced about working with persistent mode. But
I'll ask for advice to other members of the dev-team.

Best,

<pre>Hi !

Thanks a lot for your kind advice.
I have learned quite a few things how to operate the terminal.
Your instructions were followed accordingly.
Everything went right until no. 8: running the script, which was evidently
not done?!
When I opened afterwards icewm folder, I found both files menu-old and new
the same without translation.
What is worse, after computer further restart I found all the previous
changes cancelled and only the original attachment copied to /home/musixuser
remained in place.
Thus I have realized again, that Musix2 in live mode even on usb stick, but
without persistent property could not be corrected, ev. tested etc.
I could try to install again Musix2 in live mode on usb, but I need the
detailed instructions how to make it as persistent!

So I kindly ask for further help and advice.

Best regards

Jerzy

Subject: Re: [Musix-users] Help with translations

Dear Jerzy:

Here are the detailed instructions. They are ok for both musix 2 or 3.
The only issue is that I cant recall what's default user in musix 2
live mode. Beta version of musix 3 (it is alpha in fact, but
mistakenly I call it beta) is available only in spanish. Thats one of
the reasons it is not available at Musix's website or wiki.

1. Download the attachment to the user's home folder (that would be
/home/musixuser, correct this in case default user is not musixuser,
its been a while since I last used musix 2).

2. Open a terminal. Then type:

tar xfv update_menu.tar.gz

3. This will decompress the file. You will have now a new folder named
"update_menu". Now we have to change into that directory:

cd update_menu

4. In this directory there are two files and three folders. One of the
files is the script. We are now changing the script's permissions to
make it executable (this step is new and just in case):

chmod +x icewm_update_menu.sh

5. Now we copy the script to the bin folder, we need root privileges
to do that, we type:

sudo cp icewm_update_menu.sh /bin/

6. Then we copy the translation file to the locale folder. We also
need sudo command to get root privileges. In this case we type:

sudo cp pl/icewm_update_menu.sh.mo /usr/share/locale/pl/LC_MESSAGES/

7. We make a backup of the current menu, just in case:

cp ~/.icewm/menu ~/.icewm/menu-old

8. Now we run the script, typing:

icewm_update_menu

9. We wait a few seconds for the process to finish. Then check if the
menu is correct with the translation in polish.

Please any question or issue you have don't hesitate to ask.

Cheers!
Ariel.
