<pre>Hi,In my application I am reading data from a text file and displaying it in NSTableView. There are 6 columns in my tableview. My problem is when the records in file are more it takes too long to read and display the data. e.g. It takes around 1 min to read and display 70,000 records from the file. I am using NSArrayController to update my NSTableView. Please suggest some solution to make my application faster. Should I read and display only that much data that is visible to the user (like in iphone but i dont know how is it done OSX?) and update my view on scrolling? Thanks &amp; Regards AbhijeetGet Yourself a cool, short &lt; at &gt;in.com Email ID now!

If you put a NSFilesPromisePboardType on the dragging pasteboard from the NSTableView datasource method tableView:writeRowsWithIndexes:toPasteboard: (remember, I am talking about dragging, and this is how you start a drag from NSTableView), then promised files are dragged automatically, which should go through the view method implicitly (i.e. you don't have to do that yourself, NSTableView does this for you.) And at the drop the namesOfPromisedFiles... method is called.

It really should not matter that much what the code is. The bottom line from this is that I say that I know how to drag file promises using the old API. And my question is how to drag file promises using the new API and UTIs. I did not go into detail, and really think I shouldn't, because anyone who could answer my question would know what I am talking about, and the code should be straightforward but tedious. So if you don't know what I am talking about, you almost certainly won't be able to answer my question.

I'm having trouble getting my head around any of this. For instance, -
namesOfPromisedFilesDroppedAtDestination: isn't a delegate method, but a part of a protocol. And I don't see how NSTableView would know to call dragPromised... "implicitly," given that it never knows that it contains things that could me converted into file promises.

Could you post your code, please?

<pre>I am trying to figure out how to drag file promises from views such as NSTableView. Before 10.6, I knew how to do this using NSFilesPromisePboardType and the namesOfPromisedFilesDroppedAtDestination: delegate methods. The docs now say I should use (NSString *)kPasteboardTypeFileURLPromise instead of NSFilesPromisePboardType. However, I cannot find anything in the docs, no sample code or whatever, that uses this. The only thing in the docs still refers to NSFilesPromisePboardType, or uses dragPromisedFilesOfType:..., which is not appropriate for standard controls such as NSTableView (because that should use this implicitly behind the scenes). Just replacing NSFilesPromisePboardType by kPasteboardTypeFileURLPromise also does not work, the delegate method is never called. So can anyone tell me how I do file promises in 10.6+ using kPasteboardTypeFileURLPromise?

the user or not.

Yes, I understand that the review is up to me, but what I am wondering is
what kind of things people do for their reviews, if anything. Does Apple
provide any tools and/or recommendations? If so, what are they?

Good points.

Yes, thank you for emphasizing this. So, what might the best methods or
suggestions be to vet an app to help ensure it is not abusing a users'
privacy?

Thanks again for your reply. This was all useful information.

<pre>

Forget the concept of "app store" in Enterprise deployment. There is none. It's not much different from ad-hoc (beta) distribution: You put the .ipa (application) and .mobileprovision files behind a password wall restricted to your organization, and let users download them.

Users can drop the files into iTunes and sync, but it's preferred that you put the two, plus a manifest file that Xcode will generate for you, on your server, and distribute the manifest's URL by email or on a Web page. If an iOS device follows the link, the app will install over-the-air.

Review is up to you. I've never thought to attempt Xcode's validation feature with an in-house app, but what I've seen suggests that it works only for apps that are in the process of release to the App Store.

The terms of the Enterprise program require you to follow the same guidelines as for the commercial App Store, including using only supported API, but my guess (no one can guarantee) is that there's no enforcement unless you catch Apple's attention for some other reason, like distributing outside your organization.

The compiler will warn you if you use unsupported API, and obviously if you write prototypes to silence the warnings, you'll know, so you're getting "reviewed" all the time. It's bad practice whether you get into trouble with Apple or not: (1) Apple can pull the API out from under you, and unlike with the App Store, the app will have been committed to production for months. (2) You'll have blocked your company from monetizing its investment in the app. Either might be expensive to correct.

Abusing your users' privacy is a good way to harm employee retention, plausible cause for a lawsuit, and possibly a crime. Your company could fire you for subjecting it to such liability. (Even if it encouraged you to do so; it might need a scapegoat. Get any such encouragement in writing, along with your warning of the consequences.) I'm being dire in my warnings, but take away the point that this is a _very_ serious matter.

If you notify your people that anything they do with your app belongs to the company, working for it would still suck, but it'd probably be covered.

The university I work for has a strict policy of doing security and privacy reviews of its apps, in-house or published. (In addition to general laws, we're subject to academic-privacy statutes.) We have a template for privacy notices, which the lawyers and I review and amend to suit the app.

What I am interested in learning about, for the moment, is the distribution
of in-house apps. Specifically, what procedures do you follow to vet the
apps that go into your in-house app store? Are there any good, public,
resources out there that discuss this topic as to what tests / procedures
to follow to make sure an app being placed in the App Store, for example,
doesn't use any private APIs, does not send data when it also claims it
won't, etc...?

This is a basic enough question that I advise you to read the conceptual documentation for Cocoa before you go any further in your development efforts.

Event handling is covered in the Cocoa Event Handling Guide

&lt;http://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#documentation/Cocoa/Conceptual/EventOverview/Introduction/Introduction.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/10000060i&gt;

but don't stop there. There's a link to the Cocoa Fundamentals Guide on that page. That's your next (actually your first) step.

I do need it though, as I want to 10.5. I figured out that the text fields have a clearColor set for their backgroundColor by WebKit. Anyone have an idea why this is happening, and whether there's a workaround?

NSURL troubles: Apple docset URLs with multiple fragment identifiers

<pre>Hi Everyone,

I am having a hard time converting URL strings pointing into Apple's docsets into actual URLs. Here is an example, which works fine when copying and pasting into Safari:

file:///Library/Developer/Documentation/DocSets/com.apple.adc.documentation.AppleLion.CoreReference.docset/Contents/Resources/Documents/index.html#documentation/Cocoa/Reference/NSTokenFieldDelegate_Protocol/Reference/Reference.html#//apple_ref/occ/intfm/NSTokenFieldDelegate/tokenField:shouldAddObjects:atIndex:

However a simple [NSURL URLWithString:urlString] returns nil when presented with the above URL. After adding percent escapes (which converts the '#' fragment identifiers into '%23') the URL can be created, but it does no longer work (eg when using NSWorkspace's openURL: method).

Looking closer at the URL there is something peculiar: It has two fragment identifiers. Safari simply appears to be ignoring the 'index.html#' bit, and ends up with that Reference.html file, which it opens and then jumps to the location indicated by the second fragment.

Any way to make this into a valid URL?

Thanks

Re: Multiple Selection in NSComboBoxCell

<pre>Abhijeet,

I'm replying to you in private as well as to the list. I developed on Mac OS X and before that YellowBox (NeXT-derived precursor to Cocoa that ran on Windows NT) in the late 1990s and early 2000s. You were very clear in your question.

I don't have an answer to doing exactly what you intend here, since I haven't programmed in Cocoa for some time, and the API has been upgraded. You could probably do something with the NSControl or NSView that forms the NSItem in the combo box, to put NSSwitch (a checkbox) in that NSView. NSView is flexible and opens up the entire domain of what you can put just about anywhere on the display. So if you can get to an NSView that is part of the combo box item you can obtain multiple selections that way. That's the principle I would use as you research the API documentation. I likely have some details wrong here, but as I recall from my programming, the combo box or popup is made up of multiple NSItem or some such, and you may be able to access the NSView for this item. Then you can nest. I can't check the API currently, and I'll research this myself later.

If that doesn't work for you, I would consider re-factoring the UI for that NSTableView and its parent NSWindow. What I would do is to put the NSTableView at the top of the NSWindow and put detail controls for data entry in ***form view*** below the NSTableView. That is, the user would select a row in the NSTableView (which would not be editable) and then the user would data-enter the values in fields below, on a form layout, using standard controls. For a combo-box type entry with intended multiple selections, you could use another NSTableView instead.

I hope this helps! Feel free to let me know if I'm not clear, or if this does in fact help to clarify. And, of course, you may have gotten clarification already.

Calculating NSOutlineView cell indentation

<pre>Does anybody know how to calculate the full indentation used by NSOutlineView in its cells at various leveles? And how to influence it?

According to the SL release notes this calculation is not simply (1 + level) * indentationPerLevel, as it was until 10.5. Rather it is some width for the disclosure triangle plus some indentation based on the level. First of all, do I understand that this is something like indentationForLevel0 + level * indentationPerLevel? Or are only the cells at level 0 indented differently from 10.5? Moreover, I have no idea how to get this indentationForLevel0 part, is there any way to figure that our using the API?

Apart from that, I would also like to customize the indentation. What I really like is NO extra indentation for higher levels, but I do want to get the disclosure triangle. However, when indentationPerLevel is 0, there is no disclosure triangle as well. So is there a way to change this? I have tried lying about levelForItem:/levelForRow: by subclassing and always returning 0, but that did not do anything.

thanks,
Christiaan
