SwiXAT - the Swing-XML Authoring Tool - 0.5.0 released

I'm glad to announce that the version 0.5.0 of SwiXAT - the Swing XML
Authoring Tool - has been released.

SwiXAT (http://www.swixat.org) is a Swing-based authoring tool for the
quick and easy development of GUI Java applications. It implements a
true MVC framework and uses SwiXML as the XUL engine (without any
modification to its source code!), BeanShell (or Groovy) as a scripting
language for the controller, and JXPath as the binding mechanism between
the view and model. It provides a complete environment in which it is
possible to almost write an entire Java Swing application without
writing Java compiled code, maintaining however the power of any
java-based application. The use of XPath makes it very simple to
traverse the object tree of the application's business model.
SwiXAT is released under the Apache 2.0 license.

This new version adds an improved support for JList, JComboBox and JTree
components; two new data sources, DOMDataSource and ObjectDataSource
were added; the support for JComboBox renderers was added, and the model
event handling has been simplified. The user's guide (over 70 pages) has
been updated with the documentation about the new features.

You can read all the changes at
http://www.swixat.org/docs/changes-report.html and download the last
version from http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=99002

Paolo Marrone

W3C Launches Web Application Format Working Group - Comments?

Hello,

The W3C has launched a new working group chartered
to create a specification for a declarative format for
applications and user interfaces.

The W3C Web Application Formats Working Group page
states:

This deliverable should be based on an existing
application/UI format, such as Mozilla's XUL,
Microsoft's XAML, Macromedia's MXML or Laszlo Systems'
LZX, provided the owners of the format are willing to
contribute. The format should allow embedded program
code. This format, combined with the deliverables
below and existing technologies including XHTML, CSS,
XForms, SVG and SMIL, should provide a strong basis
for rich client application development.

   More < at > http://www.w3.org/2006/appformats

   Comments? Thoughts?

eBay framework released as open-source

We've just launched a new ebay codebase project at
https://xui-ebay-richclient.codebase.ebay.com/.

The project extends the open-source XUI framework
(http://ww.sf.net/projects/xui) to facilitate the construction of
rich-client applications for eBay.

The goals of the project are two fold. First we want to build
rich-client applications that make it easier for end users to interact
with eBay. Rich-client can help in this regard by caching information
locally and reducing the need for round trips to the server.

Secondly we want to make the developer's life a little easier by taking
care of some low level plumbing, particularly some of the details
surround the SOAP interfaces. Even though there is a Java SDK for eBay
we feel that a higher level/more abstracted api would be better for
everyday use and hence we have wrapped some of the APIs.

The project includes a demo application to show how the framework can be
used. It is a StoreManager design for people and companies who want to
setup and manage eBay stores.

We hope you'll find it of interest and if it is let us know what you
think - good bar or indifferent!

Win an iPod nano for Christmas

The iPod nano <http://www.apple.com/ipodnano/> from Apple will store 3
days worth of music, carries your photos and syncs seamlessly with
iTunes. And all this in a device as thin as a pencil and weighing less
than a single CD case.

Xoetrope are offering one lucky person the chance to win an Apple iPod
nano. In order to enter this competition you need to submit an
application or plugin which demostrates use of the XUI
(http://xui.sourceforge.net) toolkit.

Applications and plugins which are submitted for the competition must be
accompanied by screenshots, a short description of what the application
does and how it makes use of XUI. While source code for the applications
would be of benefit, any application submitted will be eligible. Source
code examples must be made available upon request by the judges in order
to inspect the integration with XUI. Competition entries can be sent to
ipodcomp< at >xoetrope.com <mailto:ipodcomp< at >xoetrope.com>

The Competition is open to all and is subject to the following
conditions...

    * The judges decision is final
    * Entries must be submitted by 9th December 2005.
    * The winner will be announced by 12th December 2005.
    * The prize will be shipped by 16th December 2005

Xoetrope launches XUI 2.0, open source rich-client framework

          5th-October-2005

XUI 2.0, the latest open source release of the Java and XML rich-client
framework brings even greater flexibility and ease of use to the task of
building desktop applications. Helping to return value to the desktop,
as Jonathan Schwartz terms it, XUI 2.0 now ships with KalIIDEoscope, a
brand new NetBeans plug-in that allows visual construction of
rich-client applications. In tandem with these releases we have
completely revamped the XUI website which now features new
documentation, tutorials, hints, tips and developer support services.

XUI can now be used to build almost everything you need in a rich-client
application from the simplest to the most complex of applications and
from personal to enterprise level applications. You can build connected
or standalone applications to make the best use of available
communications while providing productive features for your
application's users.

With the introduction of a Synth and SVG based Look and Feel adding to
XUI's existing stylesheets and the ability to add third party components
you can build highly sophisticated and visually attractive applications.
XUI even features a new layout manager, the GuideLayout to make form
design even more intuitive.

Within the KalIDEoscope editor the power of NetBeans is harnessed to
deliver full-featured rapid application development and some of the best
editing and debugging support possible. Better again, XUI is an open
source framework built in a modular fashion so you can use just those
parts that suit your needs and making integration and extension a breeze.

SwiXAT - the Swing-XML Authoring Tool - 0.4.5 released

I'm glad to announce that the version 0.4.5 of SwiXAT - the Swing XML
Authoring Tool - has been released.

You can download it at http://www.swixat.org and read a short tutorial
at http://www.swixat.org/wiki/tiki-index.php?page=Tutorial

SwiXAT is a Swing-based authoring tool for the quick and easy
development of GUI Java applications. It implements a true MVC
framework and uses SwiXML as the XUL engine (without any modification
to its source code!), BeanShell (or Groovy) as a scripting language
for the controller, and JXPath as the binding mechanism between the
view and model. It provides a complete environment in which it is
possible to almost write an entire Java Swing application without
writing Java compiled code, maintaining however the power of any
java-based application. The use of XPath makes it very simple to
traverse the object tree of the application's business model.

In this new version the event's handling has been enhanced by
introducing the possibility to almost handle any event (MouseEvents,
KeyEvents, FocusEvents, PropertyChangeEvents, etc...).
Added the support for FileFilters, in order to determine the file
extensions shown by a JFileChooser.
The optional TreeCellRenderer tag was added for JTrees, in order to
determine the icon, text and tooltip text of each tree's node.
Finally, the user's guide has been updated with the documentation
about the new features.

You can read all the changes at
http://www.swixat.org/docs/changes-report.html and download the last
version from http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=99002

Any comment and suggestion is welcome, of course.

Regards
Paolo Marrone

Fireball - Open Source XAML Parser for Windows Forms

Hello,

In the Code Project article titled "Fireball.XmlGui - A library for
creating plug-ins with User Interface created from an XML file"
dotnetfireball writes:

In this article, I can illustrate what is Fireball.XmlGui and give a
brief introduction to it. The library is under development and any
suggestions and bug feedback are very much appreciated. If you find a
bug please register here and send us the issues. Fireball.XmlGui is
licensed under LGPL and this is very useful for programmers who need to
use the library for commercial applications because LGPL doesn't force
you to distribute your source code, you only need to distribute or link
to my site for Fireball.XmlGui source code. For news about this library,
go to my home page and get the latest binary from there.

Background

Fireball.XmlGui was developed for adding to plug-in based applications
the support for creating dynamic plug-ins with a simple XML file. The
syntax is very like XAML and it is also possible to use the code-behind!
You only need to specify on the root of the document the attribute
CodeBehind with the filename of the C# source file. The library is not
limited to System.Windows.Forms GUI creation. You can also use it for
dynamically creating any other type of classes, for adding classes as
subnodes on the XML, like the Controls tag on this example.

   Full story < at > http://www.codeproject.com/csharp/Fireball_XmlGui.asp

If anyone tries out the Fireball library, let us know what you think
and how it compares, for example to the MyXAML offering.

PS: Here's a Fireball XAML snippet:
