    <description>Hi,

if you are looking for strings like earth.software.umn.edu, there
might be a menu item "Search for Method Strings with it". I don't know
about croquet, but in Squeak image I can select the text
earth.software.umn.edu and then right click, to get a context menu
that contains "Search for Method Strings with it".

    <link>http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.comp.lang.smalltalk.croquet.devel/3708</link>
<description>I run a small company that is in the middle of a new project to create
software tools to help kids age 6-9 learn a second language. I
realize that Croquet is pre-alpha, so problems are to be expected.
Still, I hope the base is solid enough that we can create some great
demos.

I hired a summer intern who has been learning Squeak and going through
all the Croquet tutorials, but we are stuck on several issues. Dan
has outlined them here: http://vcosm.com/croquet/

Some help would be greatly appreciated. In return, we're happy to
write up the details of what we learn, e.g. turning our questions into
mini tutorials and sharing general-purpose code.

Briefly:

- if we start from an existing world and make a few changes, how do we
save them? Here's the exact steps we tried; http://vcosm.com/croquet/ChangeExistingWorld.html

- what's the best way to create a new empty world? We tried invoking
BaseWorld from Squeak: http://vcosm.com/croquet/CreateEmptyWorld.html

- after we drag a JPG into a world, how can we turn it into a static
object (without the manipulation frame)? How can we save it in the
world? http://vcosm.com/croquet/AddAPicture.html

- TPainter is cool ... can we load an image (or edit a JPG that we
dragged into the world)? Where in the source code should we look to
try to enhance the 2D-to-3D conversion? (which is a nifty feature
BTW). http://vcosm.com/croquet/UseTPainter.html

Help on these issues would be a great start, though we have a few
misc. questions here: http://vcosm.com/croquet/OtherQuestions.html

Thanks in advance,

Scott

I am back to solving problem 3 now, it was left alone for a while but
becoming a crucial part now as the tree menu is used oftenly.

My problem is after clicking the tree view menu, the keyboardFocus is set to
the tree and all key events will not be forwarded to the harness anymore.
There is a releaseKeyboardFocus method in CTreeWidgetCostume which gets
called in the method onMouseLeave but it just seems to release the focus.
How do I set the keyboard focus back to the harness so that key events can
be forwarded to the harness again?

I have seen your mention to a project about observation robots for GIS
applications.

I have been involved in something similar in a project for pollution control
at Università Cattolica di Brescia, where we plan to use an approach based
on neuro fuzzy technology based on a framework (FuzzyWorld) which I
developped in Smalltalk and that I was thinking to port to Squeak.

Can you give me some further details about your project ?

Maybe we could find some synergies

Thanks

I will have a look at your work and talk with you latter if necessary.

    <description>Dear Croquet developers,

I am a student at the University of Leiden and i am working on my bachelor
project. My idea was to implement an existing image/3dmodel bio-informatics
database in croquet, where several users can 'walk through' the database and
can look at the images and models that are in it, discuss, annotate and do
whatever with it.

Ive come quite far now with the implementation, however, im having difficulties
with loading 3d models into the croquet world. There is an example tutorial on
www.opencroquet.org where some .obj files are imported (they are accompanied by
.mtl files) which works fine (SanMinimum Island). But when i tried to import
some random .obj files from the internet the system hangs :(

I was hoping i could get some help/tips on how to get a working .obj / .vrml
file 3dmodel importer for croquet.

Yours sincerely,

I'm not sure about all the reasons but one limit that comes to mind is
the conditional jump bytecodes. They are limited to the range -1023 to
+1024 (IIRC) so the VM doesn't know how to execute jumps beyond these
limits.

You send messages. In general you cannot get access to another object's
variables unless that object allows it by providing accessor messages.
In Smalltalk all object interaction is based on message-passing, there
simply isn't a way of accessing another objects variables directly.

But, I don't get very clear why does exist this limitation. Do you know if
there is any document where I could read about this limitation?

By the way if I should split my method, suppose the next scenario:
I got an object (suppose a cube) and I would like to modify their behavior
making a translation or any transformation with respect to a second object,
how could get access to the behavior of the second object accessing it from
the first object? How to gain access to their variables?

Does it have sense? Thank you for your time.
