Yes, I realized that after I stepped away from the computer... I had 
ported the 2 changes from ~April 6th, and after thinking about it don't 
remember anything in the changesets that actually used the new macros.

I'll take a closer look and see if I can do a proper job this time around.

The fix involves more than one commit. You will eg need commit
4555f37d5b014dd680cf86b735fb20b659f296d3 which adds a function
to interpret.c that was needed by the amd64 code-generator, and
then by the new x86 code-generator.

The easiest approach is probably to first backport the amd64
code-generator, and then the new x86 code-generator.

I tried porting the fix, but it doesn't seem to make any difference. It's possible I've made an error in my port (the cherry-pick generated a merge conflict so I did it by hand). I'll try it again tomorrow.

As a side note, on Darwin, the problem with machine code on ia32 (and perhaps 64-bit as well,) is that the assembly generated isn't PIC, so it fails to compile with errors about registers being clobbered.

It's an incompatibility in the generated code with recent versions
of gcc/x86, and has been fixed in Pike 7.9 since a month or two ago.
It should be rather simple to backport the code to Pike 7.8.

Does anyone have any objections to 7.8.680 becoming the next official release of Pike? Do note that machine code is non-functional on (at least more modern instances of) i386. If I don't hear any objections in 24 hours, I will attempt to update the website, etc, with the new information.

After some tests, it seems that the problem is the type of min():

(1) Result: array(int)
(2) Result: string | int | !mixed

Are you talking about the PUSH_FRAME macros in object.c where it
constructs "fake" frames for the sake of various C callbacks? If so,
it seems to me that the bug is in List__get_iterator_find_parent if it
doesn't cope with the call from INIT.

The inherit graphs have now been extended with the immediate children
(if any).

I've also had a first go at fixing another top wish-list item for the
manual: documentation of inherited symbols. The navigation now (with
the help of some self-generating javascript) includes the inherited
symbols.

OK, here's an update:

I installed OpenSUSE 12.1 (32-bit) in a VMware host, in which I attempted to build 7.8.680. Sure enough, I got the errors that Stephen and Oleksii reported.  GDB wasn't able to give me any useful information, as the stack frames were all trashed.

I thought, that seems like maybe a machine-code problem, so I rebuilt with --without-machine-code and sure enough, it built and is currently running the testsuite.

So, the answer is to use the following:

make CONFIGUREARGS="--without-machine-code"

and you should be OK. Please give this a try and let me know if you need any additional information, etc.

In INIT, EXIT and some gc callbacks the fun in Pike_fp is set to
FUNCTION_BUILTIN. there are some places in the code (e.g.
ADT.List()->_get_iterator) where ->fun is used in INHERIT_FROM_INT et
al, which segfaults (except with PIKE_DEBUG). I am not sure where to
fix this. Should the *_FROM_INT macros check for FUNCTION_BUILTIN
or is this better to be handled in the individual INIT/EXIT methods ?

does anyone object to making ADT.Stack and ADT.Queue inherit ADT.List?

(compilation error of *.s file) , so I switched to 7.8.680

Too bad those pages consistently crash latest Safari (at least for me,

Seems to be the xlink:href pointing to a page in the page cache that
is the trigger, and since all graphs contain a link to the current
page that condition is always satisfied. Even if we bug-report this
there will be a tail of older browsers that can't read the
documentation.

I think that's the same error that Stephen was getting a few weeks ago. I have access to only 1 Linux box, and everything went okay there; I wonder if Stephen had any time to look into the problem.

Would it be possible for you to try the same build using 7.8.352? That might give us some clues as to where the problem originates from.
