It is very odd to have a database with incomplete schema.

Interesting. I didn't know that.

YES. I'm on numerous application lists and Gentoo users with weird
problems constitute a significant block of the traffic.

Yes, it does. "make" is not that simple, there are all kinds of issues
involved.

Appreciated! :)

Nope. You didn't. But snarling Gentoo users are not uncommon.

It almost certainly attempts to open the database, gets an exception,
copies the file, creates a new database. At least that is ~ 'standard
practice' for desktop applications.

Excellent.

<pre>First - please note that I actually found the "correct" backup copy,
which was not corrupt, so I'm back in business without having to
recreate all my tags. However, I'll respond to some of your points
just to clarify what happened and what I was asking. Sorry to be so
long-winded about it - feel free to ignore if you don't care about the
details.

On 2012.05.23 13:53, Adam Tauno Williams wrote:
I'm not completely sure of the full order of problems, but I do suspect
I fell victim to more than one distinct issue. If the above simply

although I don't really expect to find out. I do know the issue that
caused most of my problems yesterday was that libicu got upgraded, and
so many things that depended on it, including both other libraries and
applications, failed to run until recompiled.

By the time I looked, the database was empty except for a meta table.
I thought that was the first error message I noticed, but I can imagine
I simply glossed over the first failure (which trashed the database)
and that was the second.

[snip advice on creating the tags table ...]

Sorry - it wasn't very clear. Normally, if I see an error I don't
understand, I copy and save a bunch of the text for reference during
troubleshooting. If I jump to a conclusion, I don't save it, which
often gives me trouble later, if the error changes because of partial
or incorrect "fixes." In this case, I didn't save the error, but I had
googled it, so I was able to pull up the google page from my browser
history and recover the error string I had searched on. However - it
does appear that this was not really my underlying problem and only a
secondary effect.

Well, that is clearly the only place f-spot looks for the database
(photos.db). However, under circumstances which I don't fully
understand, it seems f-spot (or maybe sqlite) thinks the file is
corrupt, so copies it to photos-yyyymmmdd-n.db before creating a new
one. Normally, if launched from an icon or start menu, that file gets
created in the same directory, since it would normally be set as the
working directory. However, if f-spot is launched from the command
line, it drops that file in the current working directory. That is why
I found a bunch of those files in various places. Most of them were
just copies of the essentially empty database. The "good" copy
happened to be in /var/spool/mail, since I was also dealing with mail
problems at the same time. (yes - my own fault for trying to fix too
many problems at the same time.)

No - all the db files other than in the right directory were those
backup dated copies.

I'll certainly agree with you. Actually, it seems that a backup IS
made if the db file is thought to be corrupt. My problem was that I
hadn't yet figured out where to look for it, complicated by my command
line launching in the midst of lots of cd'ing around to fix other
problems.

Obviously. Or maybe definitely, but not sufficiently obvious?

While I do basically admit that I should behave like a developer, do
you claim that every Gentoo user is inherently a developer? I suppose
it is a valid viewpoint, but I think you would get some disagreement.
Just because I'm compiling from source does not automatically imply I'm
touching anything in the code. However, I do agree that a Gentoo user
should (and usually does) take responsibility for their actions. Note
that I didn't say "F-spot destroyed my database. I want you to fix
it!." At least I hope nothing I said was taken that way. I was trying
to ask for help tracking down the likely order of events that resulted
in my database being apparently trashed.

Every distribution I have used has some problem or other. I prefer the
control over my system I get with Gentoo, and yes, I do accept the
issues (such as this one) that introduces.

As someone's sig line says (misquoted, I'm sure) "There are two types
of people, those who do backups, and those who have never had a hard
drive fail."

I agree it was not likely to be an explicit action by f-spot. However,
the last error message I got said something to the effect of "Can't
open the database, probably corrupt. Backing it up as
photos-20120522-0.db and starting over." That's clearly a paraphrase
from memory and not a direct quote - I'll have to hunt through the
source to find the message. It may also be something inherent to
sqlite3, but again, I won't know until I dig through source (in my
copious free time...) By the way - since copying that backup file to
~/.config/f-spot/photos.db seemed to restore my data, it obviously was
not actually corrupt, thus my wondering what triggered the copy and
creation of a new one.

Definitely.

Speaking of backups, I use the following to backup F-Spot -

DB_LOCATION="$HOME/.config/f-spot/photos.db"
echo ".dump" | sqlite3 $DB_LOCATION &gt; f-spot.sqlite.backup
echo "PRAGMA integrity_check;" | sqlite3 $DB_LOCATION
echo "VACUUM;" | sqlite3 $DB_LOCATION
tar cvf FSpot-`date +%Y%m%d`.tar \
 f-spot.sqlite.backup \
 $HOME/.config/f-spot \
 Photos

This exports a copy of the photos.db database, does an integrity check,
and performs a vacuum. I don't know when, of if, F-Spot itself performs
the integrity check or vacuum operations.

If you look at the F-Spot sqlite database does it have a tags table?

$ sqlite3 $HOME/.config/f-spot/photos.db
sqlite&gt; .schema

CREATE TABLE tags (
id INTEGER PRIMARY KEY NOT NULL,
name TEXT UNIQUE,
category_id INTEGER,
is_category BOOLEAN,
sort_priority INTEGER,
icon TEXT
);

Eh? I have no idea what this means.

I don't believe there is a relevant database anywhere other than
$HOME/.config/f-spot/

Perhaps you have very old database lying about as a result of the
location being moved over time and a real migration having not occurred.

I dunno; photos.db can be pretty big. I personally don't see a need
for this.

(a) Users should make backups.
(b) Developers [you are compiling - THIS MEAN YOU!] take full
responsibility for what they are doing. Developers certainly know
enough to make backups; otherwise they shouldn't be playing with those
toys.

Better yet, IMNSHO, do not use Gentoo. Use a distribution that has a QC
workflow and builds packages in a consistent manner.

I have a hard time believing F-Spot overwrote your database. I'd
suspect your build got screwed up, F-Spot couldn't open the database,
and you did 'something' to make it work. That 'something' deleted your
database.

:) Make more backups!

<pre>I've been using f-spot for quite a while, with about 3500 photos. I'm
on Gentoo Linux, and a recent set of updates left f-spot not working.
One of the libraries it uses got updated, but not f-spot itself, and
the error on startup included "f-spot caught an exception -
hyena.data.sqlite.sqliteexception: sqlite error 1: no such table:
tags". I assumed that once I got all the other updates done, and I
recompiled f-spot, it would work again. (The only reason I have that
error message is that I extracted it from the google search in my
browser history.) Well, after all the recompiling, my next attempt to
run f-spot said something about a bad database. Unfortunately, EVERY
f-spot .db file I could find (scattered in several directories,
probably due to some attempts at command line start) were empty except
for a meta table. The only f-spot backup .db files were from 2009.

I know it's my own fault for not having a recent backup, but I'm really
surprised that f-spot would overwrite the database unless it started
successfully and had something to change. Is there potential here for
an enhancement request that a backup is made of the .db file before any
attempt to open it? At this point I'm really just looking to
understand when/why/how the .db got overwritten, as well as seeing if
f-spot can avoid such problems in the future - even if the problem is
actually in one of the libraries and not f-spot itself.

Thanks for any relevant information, suggestions, or advice (other than
to do more backups).

If you have the file and do an "ldd {file.os}" are all the dependencies

After updating from Opensuse 11.3 to Opensuse 12.1 (x64) and F-Spot 0.8.3 (packman repository)

I am getting the following error message when launching f-spot in debug-mode:

I wonder if its because you don't have the -devel package installed
for each of these.

<pre>Dear Friends,

I don't know how to install assemblies in Ubuntu(11.10), so that they become available in MonoDevelop, at this time I am getting errors when compiling the code, in almost all references like:
gdk-sharp
gio-sharp
gtk-sharp
nunit.framework
gconf-sharp
dbus-sharp
dbus-sharp-glib
etc

Either I don't have those assemblies or something is missing, the error statement against each reference is "Assembly Not Found for Mono / .NET 3.5 in Mono 2.5.10". I sent a similar email yesterday with a screen-shot of this error but it's in the moderation queue because of its size.

Thanks in advance for guiding me.

Kind Regards
Laeeq Hamid

I mentioned that unit test would be great to have. A lot of the code
has been mostly re organized, but I think there is still a lot of
cleanup/updating to newer things (ie, generics). With something like
integration tests it would be easier to make sure that functionality
hasn't been broken.

One of the other things that would be great to have would be better
documentation on what's going on in the code.

Something that I'd love to see if getting rid of libfspot in lib/, but
I think that might be a bigger project than what Laeeq might want to
do :)

<pre>Hi everyone,

I'm new to open source and linux based software development. I will work on F-Spot as a part of my Free and Open Source Development course at ANU. I hope it will be a good new experience.

Take Care

I was hesitating building and testing against master because I was afraid
maybe the DB schema would have changed and would make my photos.db *not*
work anymore on a stock 0.8.2. But I couldn't find any DB schema changes in
the Git log, so I'll try that...

Well, in that case, I wonder if it would be possible to add me in the
facebook F-Spot Export plugin app Admins (profile is
https://www.facebook.com/matthieu.nguyen ), so that I can fix the
authorizations setting and see why the app page does not display on FB
anymore. (Still haven't found the owner/contact for the page). I tried
setting up my own app and use that instead, but that gave me other problem
as I couldn't authenticate anymore, which made me think that maybe new apps
don't support the legacy authentication scheme, so setting up my new app
would force a rewrite of the whole plugin using OAuth 2.0 and the Graph
API, or the facebook c# sdk, or both.

Makes sense, as long as you can configure version
compatibility/incompatibility.

Or maybe there's a certain case that makes you *avoid* the problem :D. Does
the plugin let you pick your albums freely? What are the authorizations you
gave the app in FB (or the ones it asked for...)?

Nice :).

Matthieu

<pre>Hi, its awesome to see someone else interested in helping out! I have
a big commit to push to f-spot soon. I'd heavily recommend developing
against master though since I've made a ton of changes to things.

As far as maintainers go, I've taken the assumption that most
(probably all) have moved on and doubt you'd be stepping on anyones
toes. I've wondered actually about removing the plugins from f-spot
and instead providing them through an online service (free) since
mono-addins has that feature built in. This way plugins can be
updated and pushed without having to roll a new version of f-spot.

Something that's odd/interesting about the facebook export tool is
that it works for me. I'm wondering if there is a certain case that
causes the problem.

Cheers,
Stephen

PS. I'm thinking about setting up an Open Build Service account on
build.opensuse.org and providing development packages so that people
can test them before a release.

In about 3 weeks when I'm down with this semester I'll also start
having more time.

Well, what bothers me is that when trying to get to the F-Spot Export
Plugin App page on facebook, I get a "page not found". As if the App had
been disabled/deleted.

Since the plugin itself hasn't changed for quite a while, I would assume
that lack of maintenance make it a rather deprecated thing (using the
REST API which is now deprecated in favor of the Graph API, missing
permissions which were not necessary before but now are, etc...) and
could have caused FB to shut the page off entirely :(.

I'll see what I can fetch from the app info programmatically, see what
happens...

Matt

Awesome. F-Spot deserve's some love.

Sorry, I have no idea about the FB API. Is there anywhere you can
look-up the owner and permissions using the Application key?

There is this
