do this.

This is now in the ttfautohint git repository.

<pre>Dear Werner,

I have a concern that young people prefer to ask everything Google
than type "ls" and lookup some documents. And, unfortunately, Google
prefers a message in stackoverflow or mailing list.

Is it possible to make some hyperlinks from
http://freetype.sourceforge.net/index2.html
to
http://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/freetype/freetype2.git/plain/docs/INSTALL.CROSS
and other files under docs? I'm not sure if it would be listed when
one searches "freetype cross" by Google, but would be the first step.

Regards,
mpsuzuki

before posting your question, and give us a proposal of
good title of the document to describe the tutorial for
MinGW compiling of FreeType2 (or, how to present the tutorial
for the people having troubles like you) ?

Umm, I think the documentation itself is included already
(docs/INSTALL.CROSS), and the problem is "how to guide
the people asking such question to appropriate document".

If we make a document titled "docs/INSTALL.MINGW", it would
be easy to be found?

Ahhh..., which is the message you wrote "it is on unix"?

If it is the message that configure immediately prints after
the execution (and before checking compilers etc):

Please do not care about it is unix. For first, the platform
in above message is the hosting platform, not the target platform.
And, even if the platform is set to unix like above, it does
not make the compiled binary to unix. The autoconf will tune
appropriately, even if the beginning message says as unix.

The background of the failure in apinames.exe would be that:
apinames.exe is compiled as MinGW binary and it cannot handle
the cygwin pathname (/cygdrive/c/ is cygwin convention. C:...
should be used for MinGW). What we should do? The apinames.exe
should be compiled for cygwin environment, not mingw environment.

Checking your config.log, it seems that the project is not
configured for cross-building correctly:

configure:3013: checking whether we are cross compiling
configure:3021: x86_64-w64-mingw32-gcc -o conftest.exe  -I../../base/include -L../../base/lib conftest.c  &gt;&amp;5
configure:3025: $? = 0
configure:3032: ./conftest.exe
configure:3036: $? = 0
configure:3051: result: no

In summary, please try

./configure --host=x86_64-w64-mingw32 --build=i686-pc-cygwin --with-zlib
--prefix=/cygdrive/c/Library/base CPPFLAGS=-I../../base/include
LDFLAGS=-L../../base/lib

(the difference is "--build=xxx")

This file contains any messages produced by compilers while

It was created by FreeType configure 2.4.9, which was
generated by GNU Autoconf 2.68. Invocation command line was

| Here is a matrix of mmap possibilities:
| mmap private not fixed
| mmap private fixed at somewhere currently unmapped
| mmap private fixed at somewhere already mapped
| mmap shared not fixed
| mmap shared fixed at somewhere currently unmapped
| mmap shared fixed at somewhere already mapped
| For private mappings, we should verify that changes cannot be read()
| back from the file, nor mmap's back from the file at a different
| address. (There have been systems where private was not correctly
| implemented like the infamous i386 svr4.0, and systems where the
| VM page cache was not coherent with the file system buffer cache
| like early versions of FreeBSD and possibly contemporary NetBSD.)
| For shared mappings, we should conversely verify that changes get
| propagated back to all the places they're supposed to be.
|
| Grep wants private fixed already mapped.
| The main things grep needs to know about mmap are:
| * does it exist and is it safe to write into the mmap'd area
| * how to use it (BSD variants) */

I suspect alignment problems. Please have a look at the documentation
of FT_Bitmap and read the details of the `pitch' field. For testing
purposes, you should try to render a simple glyph shape, say, a
rectangle, so that you can find out which pitch you need or get.

<pre>Good afternoon (it's 13:45 in Japan),

I'm afraid you've configured for self-hosting (cygwin would be recognized
as an unix), not configured for cross-development. Could you describe
how you configured, and post config.log?

<pre>Good evening,
            I've tried to compile freetype 2.4.9 using mingw-w64
toolchain on cygwin environment (I have Windows 7 64-bit).. The
configure step goes all OK, although it tells it is on unix.. When I
call "make", the command compiles almost all the headers, but when it
calls the script apinames.exe it shows "coud not open
'/cygdrive/c/Library/src/freetype/include/freetype/ttnameid.h' for
writing".. I think apinames.exe is broken to me, maybe because functions
fopen() returns NULL at the variable out, sending stderr signal... Is
there a solution or a workaround? Do I need this executable to compile
the library?
                Thanks, goodnight

<pre>Hello,

I have found some port attempts of freetype2 for .NET and I try to set up a
working project of mine. My intention is to read the bytes of a generated
glyph's buffer. The problem is that when I try to create a .NET Bitmap
objects from these bytes I always get exceptions or garbage no matter what
alternatives I have used. With freetype I have tried two approaches :

Init_Freetype();
New_Face();
Set_Pixel_Sizes();
Get_Char_Index();
Load_Glyph();
Render_Glyph();

And then from the GlyphSlotRec structure that Render_Glyph() saves, I try
to read bitmap.buffer. My second approach is the following :

Init_Freetype();
New_Face();
Set_Pixel_Sizes();
Get_Char_Index();
Load_Glyph()
Get_Glyph();
Glyph_To_Bitmap();

And then with a typecast I get a Bitmap_Glyph structure object.

All the methods I mentioned above return 0 so there are no errors. And the
typecast seems ok. Obviously there is something wrong when i try to access
the bytes of the generated glyph like this :

glyph.bitmap.buffer.

The way I try to read the buffer is by copying the bytes starting at the
memory location of the buffer ranging until glyph.bitmap.width *
glyph.bitmap.rows.

Any suggestions or hints?

Thanks,

Vlad

You should look up in the Mac OS X documentation how to open a
terminal and how to work in it.

I don't understand this. If you design a font with FreeType, and you
don't add hints by yourself (either manually or by FontForge's
autohinter), it is normal that there are no instructions in the font.

No idea how this is relevant.

On the command line, it's rather simple. Assuming that the
`ttfautohint' binary is in the path, you simply say

  ttfautohint foo.ttf foo-TA.ttf

to autohint font `foo.ttf', putting the output font into `foo-TA.ttf'.

<pre>Sorry I don't know how to make computing on the terminal iMac (OS Lion).

I am building a Font with FontForge and there is missing instructions table in it.

I don't know if this is the main problem.

I can't validate my Font.

I don't know what exactly to do to run my Font with ttfautohint

Please give more details what kind of problems you have.

See this page for more details w.r.t. installation on Mac OS X:

  http://code.google.com/p/googlefontdirectory/wiki/InstallingTTFAutoHint

If you are brave, you can also build a GUI binary; you simply have to
install the Qt libraries, then do a build from source code.
Unfortunately, I haven't managed yet to provide a ready-to-run dmg
bundle.

<pre>Hello,

I downloaded FreeStyle on my iMac (OS Lion).

But I ignore how to use it on the Terminal making it working on my Font: VEGESIGNES.ttf

Is there someone to help me?
