Er. *what* asked for Flash? (That wasn't what I meant by look stuff up.)

Google products, including GMail and Google Docs use DHTML and *lots
and lots* of JavaScript. The stuff you are talking about, like
rendering common attachment types in your browser, is JS powered. (It
works on mobile devices that don't *have* flash.) It you aren't
running a relatively current browser supporting a current version of
JavaScript, you will not have a good experience, because many things
simply won't work.

I use Firefox (actually, Aurora, which will become the next Firefox
release version.) In Aurora, I run NoScript, which blocks scripting
activity unless the site is in a user maintained whitelist. Mozilla
also implements the plugin_helper executable, which runs as a child
process of the browser, and implements a sandbox in which plugins can
run. The idea is that a crashing plugin won't take the browser with
it, and Adobe Flash is a worst offender.

Flash (and plugins in general) are increasingly deprecated. Current
browser development direction is "Plugins are bad. The user should be
able to do everything without requiring them." And Adobe is
curtailing flash. Development of flash for mobile has been ended, in
good part because many mobile devices simply don't support it. (Apple
refused to support flash.) Flash will still be supported on the
desktop, but I don't expect a lot of development. Adobe has a tool in
alpha intended to convert flash to HTML5, and will be going in that
direction in future efforts.

Avoid JS and flash if you prefer, but be aware your reasons for doing
so may not be valid.

No, it doesn't.

Yes, it does. Google uses AJAX, with lots of DHTML and JavaScript.
You need a browser that supports current web standards. (I use
Firefox.) You don't need Flash. (If you are on a mobile platform
like an iPad, you don't *have* Flash. It's not supported on the
platform.)

It is not. Look stuff up.

I have other ways to do that, and don't believe I ever used Google's.
I don't know what you think PDF might have to do with flash, however,
other than both coming from Adobe.

Agreed, many sites use flash that don't need to, and even some that
arguably need to use it badly.

But I'm a designer turned computer geek, have a number of volumes in
my library on art, architecture, design, photography, and typography,
and visit art and design sites that *do* use flash effectively.

True. You can't deliver a virus by a nasty attachment if the
attachment never reaches the user's machine.

It's rendered in the browser, by code on Google's end.

I do have the Adobe Flash player installed, but it's not involved in
the transaction. The attachments in question are not SWF objects.

(I have Adobe Flash under Linux, as well. There is an assortment of
web content that _requires_ flash, notably sites concerned with art
and design. And while HTML5 offers hope down the road, an awful lot
of video is still handled by flash.).

The FreeDOS localisation project has been moved

<pre>Hi all,

Just wanted to say that the FreeDOS localisation project moved to a new
location: http://freedoslocal.sourceforge.net/

I moved it for two reasons:
 - to make it easier for possible contributors to contribute (I can
provide svn access to translators on request)
 - to make the URL look more 'official'

The move required a fair amount of work, since I had to rewrite the
whole html drafting engine to a C CGI (it was coded as an offline CLI
generator in FreeBASIC). Now the dynamic page can be compiled/executed
directly on sourceforge servers.

Hopefully translation statistics are still okay (although the content is
quite old).

Unfortunately I couldn't find any way to make the thing update its
translation files from SVN by itself, so the synchronization still
requires a manual action from me (btw, if anybody knows a way to access
the svn repository of a project from the project's web hosting, I'd be
thrilled to know how).

Anyway, bottom line is:
 1. The project is hosted here now: http://freedoslocal.sourceforge.net/
 2. If you feel like working a bit on FreeDOS translations, I'll be
happy to provide you a write access to the sourceforge SVN repository
 3. Any contributions are welcome ;)

cheers
Mateusz

And none of the issues pointed to are inherent to electronic
databases. The problems mentioned have occurred for as long as
records have been kept.

Not from where I sit. At one time or another, I've used Microsoft
Mail, Outlook Express, Outlook, Netscape Mail and News, and
Thunderbird for email, not to mention some text mode clients like
mailx on Unix.

I use GMail and *prefer* the web interface, I could download my main
via POP and read it in a local client, but have no reason to do so. I
don't need a local copy of 99.99% of the mail I get, I'm quite happy
to have it reside on Google's servers. It also provides me with a
level of security. Email is the principal vector for virus delivery,
by attachments all reside on Google's servers too, and never reach my
machine. Google has viewers for all common file types, and there is
seldom need for a local copy of the attachment.

My GMail mailstore is a database, searchable with standard Google
queries. Labels and filters provide a more flexible alternative to
local folders. And labels are arbitrary index keys into the database,
and I can apply more than one label to a message.

I used to use Outlook for email and download via POP. I would *not* go back.

Aside from that, web-based email interfaces suffer in the usability

I personally don't *care* that Google scans my mail. The scanning is
done by algorithms, not human beings, with the intent to provide ads
topical to the content of the messages. The ads are sometimes useful,
sometimes whimsical, and always unobtrusive. I could quite easily
filter them out entirely, but don't bother.

As a general rule, I've never considered email secure, and normally
don't say things in email that would give me heartburn if they became
public. If it's *that* private, well, that's what GPG is for.

I'm contrarian on privacy. The three areas I consider private are my
finances, my health records, and my sex life. The first two are in
the hands of third parties who have legal as well as moral reasons to
try to *keep* them private, and my sex life never gets online in the
first place. For the rest, I'm an open book.

My usual response to worries about privacy is "You *wish* you were
important enough that anyone could be *bothered* to pay that sort of
attention to you. You aren't and they don't."

<pre>Hi,
AFAIK, Google's machines (not people) automatically scan your
messages to better target ads at you. They don't keep any private data
(or at least not beyond minimal legal limits).

My ISP is AT&amp;T, formerly Bellsouth (whom AT&amp;T bought out, among
others). Even they (Bellsouth branch) switched the whole email over to
a Yahoo!-based one a few years ago. For various minor reasons, I don't
use that account anymore anyways. (I'm not sure I'd recommend
Outlook.com either, but MS is pretty heavily pushing that these days
too. What else is there? Dunno ....)

I'm not really ragging on Yahoo! (though they aren't my favorite), but
a few years ago they were majorly hacked, and at least two other
Yahoo! users (who are real, trustworthy people in real life) have
indirectly spammed me personally. Scratch that, one other former
FreeDOS contributor also indirectly spammed this list a while back.

My point is: 1). Yahoo! may be insecure, 2). maybe these people need
to change their passwords to thwart the aforementioned hackers, 3).
these people probably aren't actively spamming anyone, so they are
innocent (and we shouldn't ban them all upon first offense, even if
annoying).

<pre>The privacy of yahoo email users will decrease on July 1st when yahoo will
begin more aggressive ad scanning of your messages stored on their servers.
I even noticed a new ad format that looks like it is part of your inbox
list but its a sponsered ad. I would recommend switching to other
providers, I wouldn't recommend gmail as google scans your messages too.
Http://digitalatoll.com offers email that is private and secure but is not
free.

<pre>Hi Ezequiel,

If I understand you correctly, you only want to use
NET USE to access files on the host OS while running
DOS within a complete virtual PC. With a DOS-aware
box for your DOS, this is not necessary. For example
in DOSEMU, you simply define any Linux directory as
any drive letter for DOS. Similar things can be done
with dosbox. The latter is mostly interesting within
Windows, as DOSEMU is only available for Linux. Also,
dosbox simulates even DOS itself, with gamers as the
target audience. DOSEMU only simulates "peripheral"
hardware (graphics card etc) and lets you run a real
DOS inside. Dosbox only lets you use your own DOS in
"boot from virtual floppy" mode, I think...?

Last but not least, there are some DOS client drivers
for a few things for VMWARE, afair, and you can use
the command line SMBCLIENT DOS port if you ever need
to access Samba / Windows network drives but do not
want to load the memory hog MSCLIENT drivers by MS.

Regards, Eric
