Malcom, it seems you have conflated the responses to my original post (Subject: AutoNavigator: Recommended?") where James referenced the frameworks at logicurio.com, which uses a web viewer.

As David K. can confirm, AutoNavigator appears to use native FileMaker objects, not html code.

Although my desire for more feedback remains!

<pre>That's good to know, thanks for the correction. The output of the html code seemed to suggest that it was set up for objects of a set width. Is that to support the default graphics sets that are provided or was I misreading that?

The naming convention must be used behind the scenes - exactly. I understood that. I've used layout naming for scripted navigation and I've seen a lot of others do similar things. If you are reworking any system that already does something with layout names this may be problematic.

Could it be on a CD or DVD, is it on a locked disk, or is it a locked file? Or perhaps it's a folder or file permissions issue, or whatever the Windows equivalent is, if it's different?

Can you capture the Get ( LastError ) from the action that led to that message? Hopefully that will help identify the problem.

Cheers

I think the reason I got scared by them was because I just dived straight in. I know, RTFM and all that, but usually this method works for me, and I've learned a lot of things in my life this way, including a lot of things in FileMaker. Didn't work in this case, though, and I just got confused!

<pre>Colm, in the custom menu dialog there is a setting at the bottom for the default menu for the whole file. Set that to the one that you want to be on the majority of your layouts. Then in the layout definition there is a popup to specify which menu you want for that layout. Set it for the one you want just for that layout.

That means they will stick and you never have to worry about which one will be on which layout again. You can also set them with a script step, but unless you have more granular needs, setting them as defaults for the file and the specific layouts should be enough.

1. Start by making a copy of the default menu set (in the Custom Menu Sets tab)

2. Then make a copy of the Edit menu (in the Custom Menus tab).

3. Go into the copy of your Edit menu and select the cut, copy and paste menu items and specify the scripts you want it to use instead.

4. Then before you leave the Manage Custom Menus dialog substitute your Edit menu copy in your menu set copy.

5. Set up the default menus for the file and the layouts as you see fit.

That's it. Do it once or twice and you'll wonder why you ever thought it was difficult.

Enjoy!

No, I was afraid someone would suggest this, but had hoped there was another way! I always get very confused with custom menus, as I've not used them very much. (I know, I know, Catch 22!)

Last time I tried them, I had exactly the opposite problem - I wanted the same custom menu set for every layout, not just one, and I couldn't figure it out, it always changed back to the standard set when I left that layout!

Yes, it's called Custom Menus.

Using Custom menus you can define commands to perform scripts instead of their normal function.

And a custom menu can be assigned on a per layout basis.

Hope this helps.

<pre>James, thank you for mentioning our Navigation Framework, and yes it is
still free, along with several other demos available on the site.

Malcolm, those aren't really hard set limitations. It is entirely possible
to adjust the size of the navigation bar to your specifications, and also
adjust the underlying html to fit. In the demo, it is presented in such a
way that it stays centered on the layout when you resize the window, that
can be changes as well. You can also override the naming convention, but by
default it lists the layouts in the file and builds the navigation
according to that.

We are making these files available free and open, so feel free to have a
look and as always we appreciate the feedback. And of course if you have
questions or need help integrating with your solutions, please contact us!

These will work just as well in 12, if you convert them. We are working on
completing our first product and hope to get these updated with versions
for 12 to download as well soon.

Thanks!

<pre>I have used it. It's an interesting piece of work but it based on a set of presumptions that you may or may not want to be limited by.

1. it's objects are a fixed width which is reasonably wide
2. It is based on a layout naming convention.

If you're OK with those items you'll probably like it.

on this list a few months ago. Free.

<pre>Hello list,

Are owners of AutoNavigator satisfied with it? The demo movie looks quite compelling, but I also see the current version is 7 years old. It's advertised as v12 compatible, but that might just demonstrate that the original concept and implementation was solid and therefore never needed incremental updates.

If I'm building v12 solutions exclusively, are there competing solutions for automated navigation building?

Thanks for any feedback!
