Keli,

Many thanks for this posting and opportunity to provide feedback. I'm
going to participate in the call if at all possible but if I can't I'll
post my feedback as you suggest below (all with the clear understanding
that I'm not expecting any ideas to get developed per se).

I do also want to highlight this type of work, which I'm starting to see
as a type of "design hackathon" or "design pop-up session" focused on very
specific needs as something that T&L folks in the community could do on a
semi-regular basis. I could see a future where groups, such as the Samigo
Team or TCC, post calls for input like this which the T&L group then
respond to as means to provide timely and practical feedback.

Thanks! Josh

Hello,
On July 2, we will do a developer review of the settings redesign for
Tests & Quizzes, in the hopes that people will collectively contribute
developer time to getting this done. However, while the Samigo BOF has
been meeting for almost a full year on redesigning setting, I realized at
the conference that there are many who were not on the samigo-team emails
and haven't had a chance to give input.

So I'd like to set up a day to gather feedback on the design, at least a
week before July 2. If you are interested, here is a Doodle poll and I'll
try to set up a conference at the best time for the majority. Please
answer within one week.

Reviewing Samigo (Tests & Quizzes) Settings Redesign (June 24, 25, 26, or
27)
http://www.doodle.com/hpkdkbqyryndfc3y

If you can't make it, you can still give feedback on the subtasks of
SAM-2070 (Consolidate SAMigo settings from 14 categories into four major
categories)
https://jira.sakaiproject.org/browse/SAM-2070

Whether or not you plan to attend, it's probably a good idea to look at
the design online and give comments on the subtask JIRA--the latest day
for feedback will be June 27. (If you don't have a JIRA account, I guess
you could send me an email privately or onlist.)

I will say this-- the scope of SAM-2070 is limited to reorganizing
existing settings into 4 categories so that users only have to look at 1-2
categories. This will form the base for future improvement, but is not the
last word in all the improvements that might be made to settings. Believe
me, there is a lot more we could do.* The only question is, is SAM-2070
taking us in the right direction? You can leave comments about how we
might go beyond this design, but the type of feedback we are looking for
are:
1) quick changes, like better labels, order of presentation within each of
the 4 categories or
2) feedback that would question whether SAM-2070 is taking us in a useful
direction.

*SAM-2100 and SAM-2141 both allude to things that are out of scope for
now, but are in these mockups to show that we are aware that there further
improvements that could be made. I think these pages, which are toward the
end, are clearly marked

[DG: Teaching & Learning] Follow Up > Sakai Teaching and LearningGroup Meeting at Apereo

Colleagues,

I hope that everyone has had safe travels back home from the Open Apereo
conference last week and reasonably good luck catching up on things so far
on this Monday.

I'm following up on what I felt was a very productive discussion at the
well-attended Teaching and Learning Gathering that we held on Thursday
afternoon last week as the conference was wrapping up. I thought we
identified a number of new initiatives that we could engaged on which
would be of value to the community as well as some of the past initiatives
that we may want to continue and/or expand. In particular, I was very
excited by the dialog with members of the Sakai Technical Coordination
Committee (TCC) and the suggestions for how we might collaborate more over
time.

As promised, I'm reaching out post-conference to work to organize a
conference call for anyone interested discussing priorities for the
Teaching and Learning Group and starting to organize around them. I
thought we might start this call with a brief review of the primary
topics/ideas that were discussed in San Diego (as means to catch up anyone
who was not there) and then focus on which areas there is interest in
engaging on. Below is a Doodle we've created to help find a time to
connect up, if you are interested in participating please complete this by
Wednesday morning if possible.

PLEASE COMPLETE THE DOODLE >> http://doodle.com/gbsegc5my5gtgkzm [Times
are in Eastern Time (New York)]

I do realize that it will be hard to find a time that works well around
the world for all in our community. If you find that you cannot make this
call due to time zones issues but are interested in the topic please let
me know and we'll work to figure out the best way to bring everyone into
the dialog.

Looking forward to connecting up with everyone,

Josh

at Open Apereo Conference (San Diego)

Josh (and everyone on the list),
Thanks for organizing the session, and for sending this out. Unfortunately
I am unable to attend Sakai this year, but I am glad that the T&L group is
meeting. If I was there, I’d hope that we could somehow re-orient
ourselves to the current landscape. Quite a bit has changed since the days
before OAE, when we talked about the learning capabilities and design
lenses. However, I feel that the process you, David, Lynn, and Clay led
us through was really valuable: we started from an anything-goes list of
whatever we wanted and narrowed it down through successive iterations to
seven overarching concepts.
It is tempting to suggest that we do the same thing again, but it is
possible that the circumstances are different enough that it would not be
as productive. At that point we were focused on one piece of software:
the next generation of Sakai. In retrospect, it also entailed a number of
assumptions as well, such as a limited range of devices, infrastructure,
and instructional approaches. Another assumption was that Sakai was an
open collaboration of many freely participating individuals and
institutions.
At least in my own experience teaching and supporting those who teach
(mostly language), while we now have many more options available (Google
Apps, MOOC platforms, blog and wiki software, online courses, tablets for
check-out, classroom video capture, approved 3rd party services, etc), it
is often the case that these don’t work together, or don’t cover all of
our needs. Not all institutions are the same, but it does seem that many
places are still trying to figure out how the LMS fits into the solutions
that they offer to faculty, staff, and students. In addition, all of this
is happening while universities themselves are redefining their
identities, and their budgets.
It might be useful to find different ways to think outside of out of the
box software. My own paradigm for doing this is high stakes testing,
because it is a big part of what I do. We do tests of spoken and written
language that require coordinating not just Sakai, but also physical
space, network, hardware and human resources. It is by no means a perfect
system, but we are slowly finding ways to improve it without just
contracting out to Pearson or someplace else. As I constantly tell
people, if we say anything about the potential of instructional
technology, we have to be thinking about a way to get rid of all of the
blue books that are used on college campuses.
There are certainly other ways to approach this (learning analytics and
portfolios come to mind), but it might be useful to loosen our focus on
the LMS just a bit in an effort to see get a better idea of how to move
forward. My guess is that it will have as much to do with partnerships,
protocols, and privacy, but I am sure that there are many other
perspectives. This certainly isn’t something that is going to be solved
in a 45 minute session, but I am hopeful that the T&L group can be a place
to start.

Apereo Conference (San Diego)

Note: Apologies for the cross list postings.

Colleagues,

As some of you are already aware, we have scheduled a Teaching and
Learning Gathering at the Open Apereo conference which will be held on
Thursday, June 6th from 10:45 AM to 11:30 AM in Diamond I. For those who
may be new to the community, the Sakai Teaching and Learning Group has
been organizing "gatherings" of this nature for many years as means to
organize ourselves, set priorities and develop plans for the coming year.
I would like to invite anyone, regardless of your background or role, who
is interested in participating or just listening in to attend. If you are
unable to make it, please feel free to post your thoughts, questions and
ideas on one of these lists.

I also wanted to highlight that in addition to discussing our own
activities, we have invited members from the Sakai CLE Technical
Coordination Committee (TCC) to join the gathering to discuss how our
groups might be able to collaborate and support each other. I see this as
a strategically important dialog for us, as a community, to be having at
this point in our history and hope that folks will attend and participate
in it.

See you next week!

Josh

Josh (and everyone on the list),

Thanks for organizing the session, and for sending this out. Unfortunately
I am unable to attend Sakai this year, but I am glad that the T&L group is
meeting. If I was there, I'd hope that we could somehow re-orient ourselves
to the current landscape. Quite a bit has changed since the days before OAE,
when we talked about the learning capabilities and design lenses. However,
I feel that the process you, David, Lynn, and Clay led us through was really
valuable: we started from an anything-goes list of whatever we wanted and
narrowed it down through successive iterations to seven overarching
concepts.

It is tempting to suggest that we do the same thing again, but it is
possible that the circumstances are different enough that it would not be as
productive. At that point we were focused on one piece of software: the
next generation of Sakai. In retrospect, it also entailed a number of
assumptions as well, such as a limited range of devices, infrastructure, and
instructional approaches. Another assumption was that Sakai was an open
collaboration of many freely participating individuals and institutions.

At least in my own experience teaching and supporting those who teach
(mostly language), while we now have many more options available (Google
Apps, MOOC platforms, blog and wiki software, online courses, tablets for
check-out, classroom video capture, approved 3rd party services, etc), it is
often the case that these don't work together, or don't cover all of our
needs. Not all institutions are the same, but it does seem that many places
are still trying to figure out how the LMS fits into the solutions that they
offer to faculty, staff, and students. In addition, all of this is
happening while universities themselves are redefining their identities, and
their budgets.

It might be useful to find different ways to think outside of out of the box
software. My own paradigm for doing this is high stakes testing, because it
is a big part of what I do. We do tests of spoken and written language that
require coordinating not just Sakai, but also physical space, network,
hardware and human resources. It is by no means a perfect system, but we
are slowly finding ways to improve it without just contracting out to
Pearson or someplace else. As I constantly tell people, if we say anything
about the potential of instructional technology, we have to be thinking
about a way to get rid of all of the blue books that are used on college
campuses.

There are certainly other ways to approach this (learning analytics and
portfolios come to mind), but it might be useful to loosen our focus on the
LMS just a bit in an effort to see get a better idea of how to move forward.
My guess is that it will have as much to do with partnerships, protocols,
and privacy, but I am sure that there are many other perspectives. This
certainly isn't something that is going to be solved in a 45 minute session,
but I am hopeful that the T&L group can be a place to start.

Dear Apereo and Open Source Communities,

Don't forget to register for the Apereo conference<http://bitly.com/apereo13registration> and reserve your hotel rooms<https://www.starwoodmeeting.com/Book/apereo> today, Friday, May 3 by midnight US Pacific Time! This is the last day to secure your early bird discount for our annual summer conference. And we've got an amazing line-up of presentations as well as interactive events!

* Two Great Keynotes: We're excited to share that our second keynote speaker is Marilyn McMillan, Vice President for Information Technology and Chief Information Technology Officer at New York University. She will be speaking about "Openness and the 21st Century University." McMillan joins our other keynote speaker, Theresa Rowe, Chief Information Officer of Oakland University, who will be talking about "Challenges, Encouragement, and Women in IT - Does it Matter?" Don't miss these great presenters!

* Amazing Program: We have a robust program<http://www.concentra-cms.com/cfp/sessions/apereo13> filled with over 100 presentations by over 150 speakers representing more than 60 organizations from around the globe!

* Networking Cafe and Collaboration Time: You asked for it in your evaluation feedback and we responded. We've carved out time for you to network and collaborate during the conference. On Monday afternoon there will be an exciting round-robin Networking Cafe where you can find and meet like-minded attendees to share ideas and work together on common issues. On Wednesday afternoon we've cleared the deck right after lunch so you can break away and work together on projects.

* Lightning Talks: There will be several opportunities for YOU to share your insights and best practices using Apereo and open source solutions. On Tuesday and Wednesday, in the late afternoon, there will be open spaces for short 5-7 minute lightning talks. We'll have a room dedicated to "teaching" and a room dedicated to "developing." Sign-ups will be at the conference and open to all!

* Project Talks: On Monday morning, we'll offer a series of quick project talks. If you are new to Apereo, these sessions will offer a quick overview of each of the major projects, what they are about, and how you can benefit and get involved.

* Collaboration Space: Each year we offer a dedicated room for collaboration. This room will be open throughout the conference for drop-in work. After an exciting presentation, keep the momentum going! Jump into the collaboration room and knock out a project plan, whip up that code, and compete with your peers on the fastest check-ins!

* Social Events: For this year's conference, we are planning a number of social events that will let you get to know other attendees in a fun and casual setting. Some of these events have a limited capacity and are offered on a "first come, first served" basis. Many have deadlines to sign-up by May 27, so we encourage you to visit the social events page<http://conf2013.apereo.org/events> for details, and then sign-up for an event as soon as you've registered for the conference.

* Pre-Conference Workshops: There are many great opportunities to dive into specific projects to gain in-depth knowledge about launching and using popular solutions like Sakai, uPortal, eportfolios, CAS, uMobile, portlets, and Grouper. Several of the workshops are free, so don't miss this opportunity!

* And it's all happening in sunny, beautiful San Diego, California!

Whether you're an educator, developer, administrator, instructional designer, support specialist, or just a technology enthusiast -- there's something for everyone at this year's conference!

Please join us in Opening Minds to Open Solutions!

Dear Apereo and open source communities,

We are very excited to announce our first keynote for June's Open Apereo 2013 in San Diego, CA:

"Challenges, Encouragement, and Women in IT - Does it Matter?"
by Theresa Rowe, Chief Information Officer, Oakland University

There's much in the news about women seeking successful careers in IT. We read about the lack of young women choosing computer science as a major, at a time when we need more graduates in technical fields. The news tells us about the challenges women face in technology careers, such as the Adria Richards incident at PyCon. Finally, Sheryl Sandberg has started a national conversation with her book Lean In: Women, Work and the Will to Lead . What are the challenges facing women seeking careers in information technology? What can we do about it, together? And does it matter? Let's explore our roles in attracting and retaining the best talent to our profession - male or female.

Theresa Rowe is currently the Chief Information officer at Oakland University, a position she has held since 2002. Rowe has been at Oakland University since 1990, where she has served as a Senior Systems Analyst, the Manager of Student Information Systems and Director of Information Systems before stepping into her current role. Rowe is active with EDUCAUSE and other organizations focused on technology in higher education. Some of her project experience includes creating a ten year network plan, upgrading data-center facilities, implementation of two ERP systems, and implementing an open-source portal. She has a lot of experience and insight to share!

Come to Open Apereo 2013 to learn from Theresa Rowe and many of your peers in higher education.

Please join us in Opening Minds to Open Solutions!

I agree. Syllabi tend to be lengthy and somewhat overwhelming, especially in fully online courses. The proposed functionality would help students quickly find assignment and due date information without having to scroll through a lengthy document or open a separate schedule page or document. I would love to see this in CLE.

All,
I think the change would encourage more of our faculty to use the syllabus tool. I agree with Lynn that it is a valuable addition for encouraging the faculty to use the tool in a new way.

I don't know many people who post multiple syllabi for one course, but this seems like a nice improvement that could lead to using the Syllabus tool differently—for example, breaking it up into shorter, more easily digestible sections instead of posting a single, very long document. This would make it easier for students to find what they are looking for in the Syllabus.

Question came up regarding Accessibility. Answer:

Keyboard interaction

When focus is on a header, the following key commands are available:

UP/LEFT - Move focus to the previous header. If on first header, moves focus to last header.
DOWN/RIGHT - Move focus to the next header. If on last header, moves focus to first header.
HOME - Move focus to the first header.
END - Move focus to the last header.
SPACE/ENTER - Activate panel associated with focused header.

Dear All,

Bryan Holladay has created a new feature in the Syllabus tool (sponsored by Columbia). It is an "accordion" view of the syllabus sections (see screen cast below). The printing feature stays the same as in the current version of Syllabus (one long page) and there is a property that can be set to determine which item in the "accordion" is open by default. Bryan set it so it automatically scrolls to the opened item (both in portal or tool view).

Ultimately the TCC (Technical Coordination Committee, of which I am *not* a part, fyi) and tool owners will make the call of whether this gets into Sakai CLE, but we thought it would be interesting to get some input on this. Please take a look at the screencast and the Jira and let us know what you think. Is this an improvement? Does it meet a need?

Here is a screen cast of the feature: http://screencast.com/t/kK7UGzXu

Jira is https://jira.sakaiproject.org/browse/SAK-23342
