Thanks Gale,

I've been on the keyboard all day. Spent all night last night backing up the data on the Puppy install to my main server via WiFi, all day today wiping Puppy and installing Ubu10.04LTS, configuring, and adding utilities.

Got it installed with the binaries through Synaptics, but it's running very slow and only recording about 12-15 secs of audio. Still some bugs to work out, and might mean a compile from source, but I doubt I'll have the same problem with that as I had trying to compile under Puppy.

I'll keep the list advised.
Just scored a nice Yamaha 8-chan Mixing board, and I'm anxious to get a couple of my vintage mics wired up and do some audio production projects. Contemplating doing some voice-overs... We'll see how that goes.

Just to repeat an oft-made correction, Audacity only provides
inputs that your sound device does. If the sound device lacks
"stereo mix" or "what U hear", or it has one of those but
Windows is hiding it, then Audacity won't see any way to
record computer playback.

That's why reading the Manual would be good as Lin said.
http://manual.audacityteam.org/help/manual/man/tutorial_recording_audio_playing_on_the_computer.html

If you follow the link from there that says "Recording Computer
Playback on Windows" - this one:
http://manual.audacityteam.org/help/manual/man/tutorial_recording_computer_playback_on_windows.html

you'll learn that "It is common on Windows 7 and Vista that not all
recording inputs are automatically enabled" and that you have
to enable them in the "Recording tab". Unfortunately that is too
vague to be completely useful, but it means the "Recording tab"
of Windows "Sound". You can get there by right-click over the
speaker icon (by the system clock) &gt; Recording Devices. Then you
can do what the Manual says:

1 Right-click anywhere inside the Recording tab and choose "Show
disabled devices" then right-click again and check "Show Disconnected
Devices"
2 Right-click specifically over the input device you want to record
with (in this case "Stereo Mix" or whatever alternative you have), and
if visible, choose "Enable".

If it helps to have a picture:
http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Mixer_Toolbar_Issues#vistacp ..

If you obtain software to really download (as opposed to record)
the audio from a YouTube video as WAV, you're all set. That
download should be in as good a quality as the source audio
being streamed (probably better, as you will not risk stream
interruptions or e-mail dings while you are recording).

If you are actually downloading the video then there are many
ways to extract the audio from it. One is to install FFmpeg:
http://manual.audacityteam.org/help/manual/man/faq_installation_and_plug_ins.html#ffdown

then drag the video file into Audacity, then export it as a WAV.
Or use the Audacity effects on it directly if you prefer.

Bruce,

I am not a "Linux person". I only compile Audacity on Ubuntu so I

I gave those steps only to refute what you said that it was hard to
compile Audacity on Ubuntu. I am not suggesting the steps will work
unmodified on Slackware clones, but if you want an "easy" way to
compile Audacity trunk (aside from if you like recent Ubuntu as an OS)
then install Ubuntu

Basically Audacity tests the tarball on several well known distros
before releasing it, but there are far too many distros to test on
them all. The fact that Slacko are offering different sources makes
me think that modifications are needed to make Audacity compile
with whatever library versions they have. So if their Audacity
sources won't compile I think they should give you a better answer
why they don't.

One approach may be, if their source code is documented with
versioned dependencies, to go through PPM making sure you
have the exact library versions required. If any libraries have
-dev versions, you must install the -dev versions as well, as has
been said already.

If PPM gives an error when you install one library that you are
missing other libraries it depends on, then you must install those
dependent libraries (including any -dev versions) before you
continue.

If you want to persevere with "Slacko Puppy", do they offer a
ready-compiled package of Audacity? How about this one?
http://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/pet_packages-slacko/audacity-1.3.14.pet ?

<pre>

I'm disappointed to learn that you're trying to manipulate the audio
from a video. You never mentioned that in your initial message. Had I
understood that, I wouldn't have answered as I did, because all my
suggestions were assuming that you had already had an audio file. I
don't think you will be able to open a Youtube video directly with Best
Practice - that program is made to use with WAV, MP3 or other audio
files, not video.

Your real task is to capture the audio from a video. Than you can play
it, manipulate it, whatever, in any way you want. There's a page in the
manual titled "Recording audio playing on the computer". Have you read
it? It may be relevant to what you're trying to do:

http://manual.audacityteam.org/help/manual/man/tutorial_recording_audio_playing_on_the_computer.html

I understand that you may get frustrated, but your first job is to
clearly state your question, your intent, and what you've done so far,
all in specific detail. For example, you don't say how you manage to
"download a favorite Youtube video." That's important information,
because we need to know the format of the downloaded file. Otherwise
people have to assume things that may not be relevant, which wastes
everybody's time.

for me . I am taking up with the - best practice source.net offer to
try and sort out what has become a mess.
I intend to Download a favourite You Tube video ,to the best practice , and

Hi There Lin , Firstly , many thanks for your remarks which I do take on
board , and you might like to know a little about my 'STRUGGLE ' ,
I have found a way - at least with one of my keyboards to alter the pitch
by a semitone and at the moment ' live with it ' whilst I seek to
record to a manipulative wave form and from there select small parts at will
as required for further study . With respect - This is my Topic .
It certainly is enough for me -- Anyway back to my problem . Okay , I
have a video of say Oscar Petersen running . - I do not know what sort of
file it is , so I cannot open it with Audacity . It is the getting it into
Audacity that appears to me to be a stumbling block .
The 1.3 version has a ' What You Hear ' option from what I understand from
various people who have kindly e-mailed me , but this is not on
the new 2.0 version .
There is no ' Video problem ' - All I am after is Recording the Audio from
this video in Waveform .
Lin Thanks once again , I will go through your suggestions and let you know
of any success . Sincerely Bill Doran

That said, I don't consider Audacity to be the best tool for this job,
since you can't manipulate the tempo and pitch in real time. For a

with the Soundtouch plugin. It's got separate sliders for pitch, tempo,
and rate. And even more convenient choice might be the $50 program, The
Amazing Slow Downer (http://www.ronimusic.com/). It can slow down and
re-pitch music, and you can loop sections while doing it. Since I'm
cheap, I've instead been using "Best Practice"
(http://bestpractice.sourceforge.net/), a similar free utility that
does most of the same stuff, although it's a bit buggy. Good enough for
my purposes.

By the way, it would be better if you started your own topic, rather
than riding on someone else's. Your question has nothing to do with
"video problems".

Thanks again Gale,

Checked out that link, got SVN (and it's assoc libraries 'ruby' and 'tk') installed, seemed to run fine, but does anyone have a suggestion for a similar tool to 'apt-get' ? That utility is not available under this distro (like I said, the distro is built mainly on Slackware, hence the "Slacko Puppy" name). Not sure if installing the ACTUAL 'apt-get' utility would drop stuff in the proper architecture on a semi-Slack tree.

Would 'gslapt' fill the purpose needed by 'apt-get' ?
If so, any thoughts on cmd-line for that ('gslapt') ?

The actual utility used on this distro is called 'Puppy Package Manager', executable name 'ppm'.

Taking this one step at a time.
The 'big book' way...

You don't say what you've been doing, so it's not possible to say what
you're doing wrong.

After opening the file with Audacity, I can easily select any portion
of the WAV and choose Change Tempo from the Effect menu. Then choose
Change Pitch from the same menu.

That said, I don't consider Audacity to be the best tool for this job,
since you can't manipulate the tempo and pitch in real time. For a
practice tool, I like to use my regular sound file player, Foobar2000,
with the Soundtouch plugin. It's got separate sliders for pitch, tempo,
and rate. And even more convenient choice might be the $50 program, The
Amazing Slow Downer (http://www.ronimusic.com/). It can slow down and
re-pitch music, and you can loop sections while doing it. Since I'm
cheap, I've instead been using "Best Practice"
(http://bestpractice.sourceforge.net/), a similar free utility that
does most of the same stuff, although it's a bit buggy. Good enough for
my purposes.

By the way, it would be better if you started your own topic, rather
than riding on someone else's. Your question has nothing to do with
"video problems".

slow the playing down without losing the pitch , and then manipulate the pitch ( fine tuning ) , for further study – ( I am learning piano ) .
I have Audacity 2.0 - Windows 7 – FFmpeg . and have had some very helpful advice ,and many thanks for this , but none seem to work for me ,and since I am losing lots of practise time , I am fast considering it to be a lost cause . Sincerely Bill Doran

There isn't any known reason why you cannot paste between projects,
so it's very hard to comment as to why the paste apparently did not
work.

<pre>The recording and the track I pasted it into were both stereo. When I tried
to paste it in, it appeared there was nothing there, yet I could undo the
paste. I don't remember if it was just silence or if it just continued with
playing the tracks, I seem to remember it was the latter, but I can't
remember for sure. I thought it had to do with the fact that I was pasting
into the middle of an audio track, but I decided to select all tracks and
copy them all into a separate project, where the audio from the video would
go at the end, and it still didn't work. The next thing I tried was to play
the project while recording into the project that is my radio show. I
started the recording, then I pressed Alt Tab to go over to the other
project to press play. When I came back to my radio show and played it back,
the only thing there was my screen reader as I tabbed between projects in
the beginning. Also what was weird was that I could not undo the record,
which I usually can. Since I had saved the project just before I did all
this, I closed the project and it did not prompt me if I wanted to save the
changes. When I reopened the project the recording was gone. I repeated the
process with the same results as before.

Are the Media Player recording and your show both stereo? You cannot paste
stereo into mono and should hear an error for that.

Was there an error read out when you pasted?

Unfortunately we can't see over your shoulder, so please be as precise as
possible. What is the length of the selection you tried to paste? Did you
place the cursor in the track in your show before pasting? In that case you
should be able to hear it at once by pressing SPACE.

Did you have the track unmuted and the volume turned up when you tried to
play the paste?

You can also try undoing all the steps and starting the paste over again. If
you want to hear the steps, choose View &gt; History.

I'm running the beta version of Fedora, 17. I compile audacity from
subversion. I just updated to the latest version, 11743, and it
compiled and runs just fine. It blew through the place you had your
error without even slowing down.

Some points:

These are all much *newer* than are found in F17, 6, 2, and 6
respectitely. I suspect they don't exist, or if they do are in alpha
version. That leads me to believe that the packagers of audacity for
*your* distro customized it in order to get it to compile. It isn't
surprising you didn't find these libraries on the web.

The error you are getting is indicative of a change in API for a
library. I see that you are using gtk2, and the latest version of gtk
is 3. Since gtk3 is an extensive rewrite of gtk2, and gtk2 is no
longer being maintained, this is probably the cause of your problem.
Why didn't the configure pick this up? Because it probably checks a
gtk2 function that didn't change its signature in the update to
gtk3. If this is true, it is a bug, as it should have flagged that
you were using an incompatible gtk library during configure. Note that
I didn't do extensive checking here, so this could be wrong.

If you want to make audacity compile on your distro, I think you will
have to do a *lot* of work to put in place the libraries in the
versions audacity needs. You might be able to get away with putting a
bunch of symbolic links to the existing libraries for some of it,
pretending they are the libraries audacity is looking for. But I don't
think that will work for all the changes needed.

Do you have all the development packages for your libraries installed?
They are usually called -dev or -devel and have the header files the
compiler needs to put in function calls.

It seems to me that the cause of your problem is in the packages
available for your distro. If, as your rant suggested, this was a
widespread problem on multiple distros, there would be significant
discussion on the web. That there isn't suggests to me that it works
on other distros. And it's worked for me on Fedora through multiple
versions.

<pre>Being lazy and not having read this thread completely ... do you have
the "dev" versions of the needed libraries installed. For example, on
ubuntu, there is a libstdc++ and libstdc++-dev (version numbers
omitted). To compile programs you need the "dev" versions.

<pre>
OK... First off, Thank You Gale for your response.
Seems I have come full circle now, as the distro people
considered my questions about trying to get the needed
libraries as "whining", the suggestion was:

"TRY A DIFFERENT DISTRO"

What a concept !!! A distro with the needed libraries,
or a central repository to house them, instead of having
to google all over the internet and cobble them together
from different locations... I must be KRAZY !!!
Hell... Maybe I ought to go back to MSDOS...

So I figured, those that actually wrote and use the program
would probably have access to the three library files I need
to make the program (Audacity v2.0.0) run, should be just the
normal Slackware v13.37 libraries, but I was unable to locate
any such thing via google or any other engine, so I'm instead
pointed back to those friendly people in the distro IRC (sic).
(No Thank You)

So.. I d/l the full source code, as instructed by Gale
(thank you again Gale), and I am reminded why I don't do
compiling as much as I used to back in the Slackware v3.1
days. Seems when Slack got to about v7.0, those that were
doing the coding seemed to get a lot sloppier and errors
started cropping up all over the place. But it's not just
Slack that has happened to, I've had the same results from
RH, Suse, Deb, BSD, Caldera, Mandriva (Mandrake), Ubuntu,
and several others. I'd just like to find ONE distro that
works 'out of the box' without having to get under the hood.
I don't mind getting under the hood, when it pertains to
accomplishing something special or unusual, or personalizing,
but come on... THIS should be easy stuff...

Now, I have a habit to go on too long with rants, so I'll
hop down off the soapbox and just post my output from the
compile atttempt. Perhaps someone here that is more atuned
with the 'modern day' foibles of 'making' can suggest what
might be wrong. Was it 'operator error' ?

Please Please! PLEASE!!! Don't suggest that I use a different
OS, or go buy another computer... I've heard enough of that!
And those kind of 'helpful' people just make me want to cleanse
the gene pool.

Compile Attempt Results are here:

http://pastebin.com/CVsqdBTh

Looks good in the beginning, configure completes w/o errors.
But then comes the dreaded 'make' process...  &lt;screaming&gt;

Gentlemen:

I have written before, but I think to the wrong address.

I am delighted with your product and use it frequently. I have only one
problem and a 'nice to have' request.

   - I attach mp3 audio tracks to my slide shows using Audacity 1.3, but if
there is not enough 'silence' at the end it, (not the slide show), will
start to replay even though looping is not checked.
   - It would be great to have the flexibility to have fractions of seconds
for image viewing time. This would improve the synchronization with the
   audio.

Thank you,

Chris Edwards

Are the Media Player recording and your show both stereo? You
cannot paste stereo into mono and should hear an error for that.

Was there an error read out when you pasted?

Unfortunately we can't see over your shoulder, so please be
as precise as possible. What is the length of the selection you
tried to paste? Did you place the cursor in the track in your show
before pasting? In that case you should be able to hear it at once
by pressing SPACE.

Did you have the track unmuted and the volume turned up when
you tried to play the paste?

You can also try undoing all the steps and starting the paste over
again. If you want to hear the steps, choose View &gt; History.
