I don't see any reason why MariaDB should have assumed that it was a
bug in the first place. In any case, it underscores the importance of
projects that don't mandate copyright reassignment.

As Fedora, RHEL, Arch, Slackware and others now use MariaDB by default
(with Debian bug #565308 already discussing it for Jessie, and it
already having been included in openSUSE as an option for a while), it
seems only a matter of time until most people will make the switch.

I've had too many late nights..

Something to talk about though, Oracle have demonstrate the danger of
copyright assignments - they have silently relicensed the MySQL manual

Another reason for people and distros to move to MariaDB.

Still waiting on my Ouya device to arrive too. Perhaps Ben has had
more luck? I know some people in Australia have had them arrive.

I had ordered a machine to work with free software a few months back,
but apparently was still waiting on the parts after a series of delays
(not ThinkPengiun though). When my current laptop started failing I
had to cancel the order and just get something readily available. I'll
bring in what I ended up with and talk about my experiences with it.

I had anticipated having a ThinkPenguin delivery before tonight's
meeting, but it is currently at Customs (not yet being held, just normal
processing AFAICT) so won't have that to talk about.

My existing notebook computer is specifically built by ThinkPenguin to
work with free software, and we can discuss that more generally too;
it's not the new shiny though.

Another topic of interest is the Software Freedom Day plans.

I'm always prepared to ramble about software freedom news as I've done
on Byte Into It, of course :-)

Thanks for mentioning this Lev!

As someone who's enjoyed event over the past few years, I'd really like
to thank Lev, the current committee and the previous committees of LUV
for their leadership and hard work organising recent Software Freedom
Days.

Many of us have played a role in organising, but without people like Lev
stepping up to organise a venue, talks, food and publicity, Software
Freedom Day simply wouldn't happen. Big thankyou!

I'd love for Free Software Melbourne to take on a larger role in
organising the event this year. We'll certainly discuss this amongst the
group and be working closely with LUV committee.

Regards,
Ben

LUV has done it a few years in succession now, but it's really something
that should be in the domain of Melbourne FS.

    <description>&lt;pre&gt;Howdy all,

On Melbourne's 3RRR radio show Byte Into It last night (2013-06-12), we
had quite a lot of discussion about software freedom and other internet
freedom topics.

  * An international coalition has been formed, aiming to get a fair deal
    out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

  * It appears Microsoft have begun monitoring users' Skype communications.
    Disappointing? Yes. Surprising? Well...

  * The US Government is under intense pressure, after it was revealed
that the National Security Agency has been monitoring worldwide
    online communications:

    * The program, known as PRISM, taps into the servers of Google,
      Apple and Facebook among others.

    * The NSA whistleblower, Edward Snowden, has fled to Hong Kong, and

    <description>&lt;pre&gt;Howdy all,

The audio download for the 2013-05-29 show of the Melbourne 3RRR radio
show Byte Into It has finally gone online. We discussed some topics
relevant to software freedom, including:

  * The Australian Government Information Management Office has decided to
standardise its office documents to the Open Document format.

  * Interesting developments in the world of software patenting:

    * The New Zealand government has declared that a computer program is
not an invention, and is not patentable.

    * The US state of Vermont is legislating against software "patent
      trolls".

    * The German parliament has resolved that patents on software
restricted developers' rights, and that software is best covered
      by copyrights rather than patents.

  * Dominic Spill joins the team to discuss his work in open network
security, and his projects Ubertooth and Daisho.
