[Skate] More Dutch speed skating c. 1890: 2 x Vrouwes

Two riders with the family name Vrouwes were active in Dutch speed skating 1888-1895: C(ornelis)J. Vrouwes Jr.(1866-1917)and J(acobus) M.N. Vrouwes (1876-1960). Potentially confusingly, the latter is sometimes listed as C. or K. Vrouwes, the clipped version of his first name being Co- or Ko(bus). Their active skating periods do not overlap, however, and they never raced each other. Given their shared origin in North-Holland, Haarlem-Amsterdam area, a family relation may exist, but cannot be confirmed. In addition to skating, C.J. was a rowing sportsman, being, with fellow skater G.H. Jurrjens, a pair of successful competition rowers at 'De Amstel' rowing club, Amsterdam. In his forties he was the club's rowing coach and also a regionally successful billiards player. When still a junior skater, J.M.N. in 1895 started winning regionally, but then, Eden-like, he turned to speed cycling, where he obtained excellent results during a full decade, occasionally racing Jaap Eden on the velodrome, and Dutch contempora

The Dutch newspaper website of the Koninklijke Bibliotheek [`Royal Library'], online since 2010, is a - still growing -  invaluable source of historical, contemporary information on virtually any topic. A goldmine, and an even bigger one when combined with other sources, with sometimes intriguing results. As an example, below are data, thus obtained, on a pair of outstanding early Dutch sportsmen/speedskaters: George Jurrjens (1866-1904) and Maurits Cartier van Dissel (1867-1937). Both started out in rowing, not meeting in races probably. Their active skating careers just fail to overlap. GJ, skating 1888-1890, emigrated to Transvaal, SA, in 1890. MCvD was a speed skater during his Utrecht student days, 1891-1893. But, speaking of goldmines, their personal histories intersected in 1900-1901, when both participated in quite different ways in the Boer War of independence in Transvaal.

Since Dec 2009 only 1 World Cup on high altitude for distances longer than 1000 meters. This was in Feb 2011, the week after the WCh Allround in Calgary. So, their were not very much opportunities the last 3 years to race on high altitude.

I don't think any of the existing world records are impossible to beat, but the better they get the harder to beat, of course.

A couple of weeks ago I wrote a series of articles about the top races of all time, when corrected for indoor/outdoor and altitude. (no adjustment for other factors, such as weather conditions etc.).

The last one of those articles is a summary of the best tracks, the best skaters and the best years:

As you can see, there is no obvious "proof" in this material of stagnation, compared to earlier years.
