No PSAS Launch This Weekend

Portland State Aerospace Society has been working hard all year on a
third generation flight computer package. We have considered and
dropped several launch dates over the summer as we've made progress.

As you may have heard our last potential launch date was this weekend.
However we've determined the weather is unacceptable for a launch and
will only get worse over the winter. Sadly we are forgoing a launch
this year.

Despite this we have made great progress on our system. Stay tuned for
a guaranteed launch when the weather turns nice this spring!

As always our public meetings are Tuesdays at 7:00 pm in FAB 86-01 at
Portland State University. Over the winter we will be putting the
final touches on our world class rocket avionics system.

Sincerely,

-Nathan

PSAS Launch Failure Recap

Portland State Aerospace Society made it out the Brothers launch site
this weekend
for our rocket launch. We arrived Saturday and worked on setting up
launch control and the
launch tower and camp. We spent the night putting the finishing
touches on the flight
computer.

Sunday afternoon we made our way through checklists and after working
a few issues
we were ready to launch. We cleared the pad and sent the launch
command to the tower.

The igniter fired but just as the motor lit there was a bang and the
rocket lifted about 30
feet off the ground and fell back to Earth.

After waiting for the launch area to be clear we went to the rocket
and discovered that
the aft closure had failed and all the fuel grains fell out the bottom
of the rocket. We
suspect that one or more of the fuel grains were defective and ignited
so fast that the
pressure in the motor casing caused it to fail.

Luckily there was fairly minor damage to the rocket body. The flight
electronics appear
to be unharmed. On Tuesday we will work on

Rocket Launch This Weekend!

The Portland State Aerospace Society (http://psas.pdx.edu/) is pleased
to announce that we are on target for a Sunday July 31st launch of our
rocket, 'Launch Vehicle No. 2.3', outside of Brothers, Oregon.

This will be the fourth launch on this airframe, flying on an CTI
N2850 motor. This should propel our 12 foot high, 70 pound aluminum
and fiberglass rocket to an altitude of over 15,000 feet! This time we
are testing a new flight computer and new antennas. We will also be
flying the same roll control module from the last flight (see:
http://psas.pdx.edu/news/2010-10-17-2/ ).

We'll be departing Portland Saturday July 30th for Brothers (which is
about 40 miles east of Bend, Oregon) and setting up in the late
afternoon. We plan to launch on Sunday between noon and 2:00pm, which
should allow some to make a day trip out of the launch, although it is
more than four hours one way from Portland to Brothers.
