The next administrative meeting is on Monday 8th December, starting at
7pm at the Marbella Cafe[1]. The meeting is expected to last about an
hour and will be followed by the usual social meet (probably at a
nearby pub).

As usual, everyone is welcome to attend the meeting or to turn up
afterwards. There are no prerequisites to the meetings, so please feel
free to come along to say 'hi' and to see what it's all about (and to
sample the great food!).

The agenda will be going up on the wiki shortly. If there's anything
you want brought up at the meeting please let us know. The agenda and
minutes will appear as usual at
http://groups.fsf.org/index.php/Manchester/Meetings#Administrative_Meetings.

Nominations for treasurer: results

The nomination period has ended, and we have one nomination for
treasurer: Matthew Morten. He has accepted the nomination, which
means
there is no need to continue the election process.

Therefore, I'm happy to announce that from 8th December the new
treasurer of Manchester Free Software will be Matthew.

Matthew has become increasingly involved with MFS, he has been a
regular attendee and contributor at admin meetings and has plenty of
financial experience. I'm sure that he will make an excellent
treasurer.

As usual for the first Friday of the month, a group of us from ManLUG
(and various other geek groups) will be going out for a curry and some
drinks on Friday 5th December. We'll be meeting in our usual venue of
Hardy's Well pub[1], Rusholme, from 7:30pm and then heading off for a
meal after a couple of drinks. If you haven't been before, one of us
will usually be wearing a geek t-shirt of some description, so we should
be fairly easy to spot, and we'll be looking out for people anyway.

See you there!

Hi Chris,

I'm glad you've signed up to the mailing list. It sounds like you've
done a great job with the FSS and I hope we can work together in
future.

Did you see the email I sent a few days ago about the workshop on
Saturday? You're welcome to come down and have a look (and maybe help
out). I think there may be free food and it's not a million miles away
from the Access Space project in Sheffield.

There are quite a few javascript and php calendar apps - what would be great is
simple javascript iCal 'list' viewer but I didn't find one of them :(

http://www.javascript-examples.com/javascript-calendars/
http://keith-wood.name/icalendar.html

Taking a big solution and cutting it down and then using any iCal publishing
service to provide a dynamic list of events on a 'community' page would be great
for a lot of small groups.

I think you misunderstand slightly. The original question was about
the backend application used to store the dates, and whether it should
be free. I think we've established that there are several free
wordpress plugins that will do the job nicely without having to resort
to non-free software. It's interesting to see what people think about
the issue though.

I'm glad you like the idea of a calendar generally and if it helps
keep people up to date with the activities of MFS then that's a good
thing.

They describe themselves as "Open Source Software Consulting" and do

Matt will probably recommend other things but nevertheless:

Require own domain: (either purchase or transfer)

http://www.dreamcreators.co.uk/ # 1GB< at >2.99/month
3GB< at >5.99/month etc. however unfortunately the owner[1] still uses
non-free cpanel depite me trying to get him to offer a free alternative
like: http://www.gplhost.com/software-dtc.html

On the other hand, I can offer email, shell and web hosting with 3GB of
space and a reasonable amount of bandwidth < at > £4.50/month or different
packages on negotiation. The machine the account would be on is a
bytemark VPS running a completely free copy of Debian GNU/Linux with
plenty of resources to handle the load. :)
I can setup the webmail, if this is required, free of charge.

I can also resell bags and bags of bandwidth from mediatemple but I
doubt anyone needs a "high bandwidth" email account! ;)

Well, anyway, those are my recommendations, none of them off :)

Of course, none of these DiY things I have just suggested are anything
as like as neat as what

Roundcube lacks a lot of nice gmail stuff, like conversation view.
AGPLMail is, afaik, the only thing close to a complete GMail clone.
It's getting quite functional, but it still lacks some features. The
hardest thing is using your new email adress for everything. I plan to
make the transition properly myself some time soon.

I'm considering getting it started now. But it may be a while before
any of the services are stable enough for everyday use. The biggest
thing I need to get started is a good name. See here for my thoughts
so far - http://freedomdreams.co.uk/wiki/Freedom_Apps - I'd love
suggestions if anyone has any.
