<pre>Right, as I think I mentioned before, I'll be in Manchester this
Friday for the Co-operative Group's Annual Meeting and I don't mind
discussing this trip on list, as my participation is already published.

Sadly, I can't go to KoreaBeer at 7 because activities at Miller St
start at half-7, but if anyone would like to meet for a drink just
before (5.30?) and maybe talk about co-ops and FOSS projects (or real
ale), then please reply to this email. Otherwise, I'll go for a drink
with other co-op members.

Alternatively, we could grab a coffee near Piccadilly as I leave, just
after 4 on Saturday. Again, just reply to this mail somehow.

Best wishes,

Apparently the FSF has now certified a USB Wi-Fi dongle in their
Respects Your Freedom program:

http://www.fsf.org/news/ryf-certification-thinkpenguin-usb-with-atheros-chip

This is great news; the only other bit of hardware that's been certified
is a 3D printer. Apparently, Think Penguin worked with some sympathetic
engineers in Qualcomm who pushed to get the firmware released. Win! :-)

Think Penguin is a company that makes laptops intended to work with Free
System Distributions (some may recall I mentioned them in my talk on a
100% free software laptop).

Here's the actual dongle, the TPE-N150USB based on the Atheros AR9271
chipset:

<pre>Dear all

I have met a few of you and you know at this point that I'm conducting
research into working conditions for people in the IT and computing
industry, taking a critical view of the often underemployment and related
health issues that the industry potentially can be held responsible for.

In this light, I have created the following survey which reflects the
surveys I have given some of you in person as well as held short
interviews:

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/LYCX5MZ

If you can take three minutes of your time to complete these ten short
questions, I would really appreciate it very much! The survey is anonymous
so it will be hard for me to 'buy you a drink' but I will come to the next
FSUK event with home baked brownies!

:)

Yours, Phoebe

<pre>Hey there,

UCubed, the Ubuntu and upstream unconference will be held at Madlab on
Sunday 21st April from 10am to 4pm, and I was hoping there were a few
people in Manchester's free software community who would be interested in
attending. While Ubuntu doesn't have a policy towards being a free software
system, a large quantity of free software is distributed through it, so I'm
hoping there will be some areas of common interest :)

The event page can be found here &lt;http://ucubed2013.eventbrite.co.uk/&gt;, and
the format will be much the same as in previous years (i.e. typical
unconference), so if anyone of you would like to come along and talk about
free software, or really anything else interesting, then grab yourself a
ticket and drop by next Sunday.

Hoping to see some of you there,
Chris

Thoughts?

Precisely. Here, I'm describing A as "not free" meaning its users have
their freedom curtailed, as opposed to the licensing of A not allowing
the four freedoms. I specifically avoided describing A as "non-free".

Perhaps a better phrasing would be "the users of A are not free".

<pre>On Friday 19 April a number of us from various geek groups will be going
for some thai food at Siam Orchid on Portland Street. We'll be meeting
outside the restaurant just before 7pm and going straight in for a meal,
followed by drinks at a nearby pub.

http://www.siamorchidrestaurant.co.uk/

There is a menu on the web site with full costs, but expect £25-30 per
head, depending on which options people choose and how many beverages
are consumed.

The event is open to all but I need to book a table, so please let me
know by email (paul-AhP4oNs1KLk&lt; at &gt;public.gmane.org) if you would like to attend. The deadline
for booking is 6pm, Wednesday 17 April.

Hope to see you there!

Paul

<pre>There is a lot of room for unconference sessions here.
It would be great to see input from Manchester based Free Software
groups methinks. I'm sure they would be very welcome.

The programme is here -
