"Tragically for Palestinians, Zionism requires the state to empower and
maintain a Jewish majority even at the expense of its non-Jewish citizens,
and the occupation of the West Bank is only one part of it. What exists
today between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea is therefore
essentially one state, under Israeli control, where Palestinians have
varying degrees of limited rights: 1.5 million are second-class citizens,
and four million more are not citizens at all. If this is not apartheid,
then whatever it is, it’s certainly not democracy. "

A thorough reply to neoliberal ideas of the labour mkt, many of whose
theme's have been adopted by the left unfortunately, is Kevin Doogan's 'New
Capitalism': which takes apart ideas of precarity and capital flight and
all that shit we hear day in, day out as an alibi for more flexibilisation
etc etc....

Agreed, on all counts. When you add up all the above-board, FEC-reported
money, however, Romney isn't trailing Obama by all that much, and he may
even be leading. We'll never know, because "issue advocacy" groups like the
Koch brothers' Americans for Prosperity don't have to report their
spending. In any event, there seems to be evidence that Romney is closing
the money gap between himself and Obama:

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/22/us/politics/romney-narrows-obama-fund-raising-edge.html

The latest data are here:

http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2012/05/22/us/politics/campaign-balance-sheet.html?ref=politics

There are clearly some wealthy Wall Streeters and other big capitalists who
feel burned by Obama's occasional use of "populist" rhetoric. I'm sure the
Obama camp tries to smooth things </pre>

Thanks, Jeff.

Not sure how much we should believe these things. Not so much the
Open Secrets site, but the where the sources informing them are
choosing to categorize the money coming in.

Btw, the same site indicates that, overall, Obama has raised well over
twice as much as the Romney campaign, as of April 30 . . . not the
nickles and dimes of the working poor, we can be sure. It also
indicates that Obama may beat the fund-raising record he set in 2008.

According to the Center for Responsive Politics, the best source I know of
when it comes to money in politics, individuals in the "hedge funds and
private equity" sector have given about $2.5 million thus far to Romney and
about $660,000 to Obama. (This doesn't include contributions to the parties
or to Super PACs, on contributions less than $200.) That's a ratio of 3.8
to 1. The data is here:

I was wondering if any of you could give me some pointers regarding researchers, books or papers dealing with labour "market" research and theory from a radical / heterodox perspective? Work from the last two decades would be particularly relevant.

My question probably already reveals that I'm a beginner on this topic, so introductory work would be most useful, but any hints are appreciated really. I know the question is a bit broad; I'm basically looking for relatively recent economic work that provides a contrast to the neoclassical treatment of unemployment and labour force participation (e.g. the significance of the "wage offer" and the "reservation wage" in the standard approach) as well as the determination of earnings and ideally critically discusses the dominant view on these matters.

It doesn't matter if you do in most colleges. Tenured professors
constitute such a small voice any way, theri illusions
notwithstanding. Like any workers, they can usually be persuaded to
vote against their immediate bread-and-butter self-interest, much less
the long-term well-being of the occupation. This is done pretty much
the same way in all industries. Management lays down the terms of the
proposal and nobody is really allowed to challenge them. The union
behaves "responsibly" to prevent any divisive questions. The
conclusions are foregone.

In short, you have an announced "budget shortfall." Nobody's really
allowed to probe as to how. Then you have to start "cutting the fat."
I've seen this in auto, in the newspaper biz, academe. And it seems
to be working initially on a national a</pre>

Most tenured profs in my experience tut tut about how awful this all
is but until they make feelings we can eat they can keep their
feelings I suppose.

Thanks for posting this Louis. I was happy to sign the petition to free Kaileh, whose clarity about the class nature of the Assad regime, and whose record of writing and sacrifice is so impressive. The wrong people are certainly in prison.

I'm having an online "discussion" with someone who made what strikes
me as an absolutely fucknuts assertion that 90% of the money from
hedge fund people is going to Romney rather than Obama. I don't think
there are any reliable solid numbers out there, as yet, and the way
these things usually work is that somebody has a company-for-hire make
a "study," or they simply bullshit one of the media people.

. . . but I'd appreciate hearing from anyone with real information.

A review of a documentary about a guy suffering from depression,
bipolar, OC, and Asperger's. He is also one of the directors.
