We have finalized the dates of the Commotion Mesh Wireless Workshop in Dharamsala for June 3rd through June 7th. I will send more details once we have additional details about when participants should reach Dharamsala and local logistics.

Below is the link for a pre-workshop survey for every participant who will attend the workshop. So kindly fill out this survey for us to better understand the background of participants, their expectations of what the workshop would entail, and how they might use their learning.

I don't think this was publicised through the list earlier. I understand that several listmembers are expected to be there, so hopefully we will see some reports circulated here by the end of it.

Hi,

Congratulations for the video. I also added Catalan translation.

Just a comment regarding the terminology used. In guifi.net community we
stop using the "wireless" term when we refer to community networks for
several reasons. The main reason is that it is an unnecessary constrain;
better to stay technologically agnostic; what if we want to integrate a
new technology, let's say optical fibre? Another reason is that the less
technical the general name is the higher chances to get non-technical
people involve since the general name is the first reference for them.

All in all, I strongly recommend to simply and systematically use the
term "community network/s" since it is more inclusive, both, from the
technology used and the social point of view, and doing so we contribute
to standardise the concept.

Kind regards.

I added the Spanish translation a few days ago in the pad; I'm looking
forward to seeing the translation in the video :)

Also we talked with UFO about the possibility of "branding" the video
with our different communities' names and logos. Do you think that will
be a possibility? It could be powerfull...

Congratulations for the results!

Dear list members,

The call for papers period for 2nd International Workshop on Community
Networks and Bottom-up-Broadband (CNBuB2013) [1] is opened until June 15th.

This workshop is an effort to narrow the gap between community networks
and the academia. It is aimed to be a place for exchanging knowledge and
for exploring collaborations. We are convinced that putting together the
wide field experience and the innovative ideas and proposals of the
communities with the research resources and methodologies of the
academia must be beneficial for both sides.

Unfortunately academic conferences are not cheap, but we don't want the
cost to be an inconvenient for any community member to not submit a
paper. We have gathered some budget to sponsor (at least partially)
travelling costs and registration fees. Please send me an e-mail if you
need financial assistance.

This is the second edition of the workshop, and if we want to keep it in
the future we must make sure that this edition is, at least, as
successful as

This is maybe a good excuse to mention to this lists, that the book that came out of some of these efforts, "Wireless Networking in the Developing World", www.wndw.net, is now in it's 3rd edition. It's available for download, and also as an ebook for Kindles, etc.

Jane Butler, cc'd, was the editor for this edition.

Hi everyone,

wow, it's more than a decade since many of us started to implement the
idea of free information infrastructures into wifi based community
networks arround the globe. Congratulations to all!

Back in 2002 people from London (consume.net), Denmark (wire.less.dk)
and Berlin (bootlab.org) lauched a first European get together - the
BERLON meeting. After another event in Copenhagen in early 2003 we
officially launched freifunk.net. In September 2003 freifunk.net
organized the first international summer convention at the c-base in
Berlin. And with many joined forces this was the starting point for
'fresh air - free networks' in Djursland, Denmark, where WSFII was born.

At the same time Sacha Meinrath and others gathered the movement in the
US which has turned into the 'International Summit for Community
Wireless Networks' (IS4CWN).

Now, after 10 years, together with the team from IS4CWN from the US, we
are planning for a really big international get together in Berlin again
to celebrate and debate

maxigas, thank you for the links. I'm reading them with interest.
I've found that the debate on open spectrum in Argntina[0] makes little
direct mention of wireless community networks.

It would be interesting to look into the Open Spectrum for Development
initiative from the point of view of existing community networks.

We (AlterMundi) are very much involved in this matter and we'd like to
collaborate with APC if they should find it worthwhile.

Do you happen to know if the work APC has done with this initiative has
been taken into account by the governments of the countries involved or
if any effort has been put in this particular strategy?

Let us know if you find your contact person :)

Thanks,

Once again, APC has an Open Spectrum research and advocacy line, and
they seem to be active in Argentina:

http://www.apc.org/en/spectrum/country/argentina

As well as many other countries:

http://www.apc.org/en/projects/open-spectrum-development

There is also summary of latinamerica situation:

http://www.apc.org/en/spectrum/pubs/spectrum-use-latin-america-summary-report-case-stu

And there are a lot of reference papers that you can use when approaching the govt.

I can try to see who is the best contact person in APC for this.

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to let you all know that we have been able to contact the
Telco technicians responsible for the interfered link and they have
accepted our proposed solution. We moved our links to a different
channel and changed antenna polarization and they have ceased to receive
interference from our equipment.

However, it was by chance that we had the opportunity to solve this in a
private agreement (one of our community network members is a technology
provider for this telco). We still would like to make the most out of
this incident, promoting a review of our national regulations regarding
license-free bands. We are in contact with different government offices
so we could try to get the ball rolling on this matter.

It would be very helpful to asses what are the differences between our
regulations and those in countries where community networks have really
flourished.

Is there a list where it would be more appropriate to initiate a thread
on this matter? WSFII-discuss? Battlemesh? Interop?

Hi all,

I wanted to let you know that the CNC has not shown up today, so we have
no news on that front yet.

Anyway, we have been able to contact the technicians in charge of this
Telecom link and will try to solve the issue with them directly.

If all goes well, once the threat is over, we intend to build upon this
incident to raise attention on the problems with argentine regulation
regarding the ICM bands, which leads to an unfriendly environment for
the development of community networks.
In this regard I'd like to make a comparison with other countries'
regulations. Is there some comprehensive database on this matter?

I hope to have some good news in the near future :)

cheers,

Hi all,

I have been reading closely what is going on in Argentina with Ramon wireless network and my opinion would be to keep this story for now on the forum and cooperate with authorities during the investigation.
Jim, I think getting it out to the general public via news papers may cause more harm than helping at this point of time as the decision of shutting the network down or equipment confiscation has not been taken yet.

For now I think it's still time to demonstrate to the authorities that you got enough "official" information on the regulation showing that your wifi equipments are good to operate in Argentina is the good way to go for now.

You may put on some political pressure by releasing the information out to the media only when you understand there is nothing else to do to stop them turning-off your network.

We experienced similar behavior in Cameroon (Africa) and we realized that the government authorities that was sent did not really know the latest about regulation and that they were pus

Thank you all very much for the support, contacts and ideas!

I want to make clear two things from Ramon's first e-mail:
1) the interference is not to a mobile service but to a land phone
service. They use this wireless link to connect our town to another.
2) also the company is not related to Telefonica, it is Telecom, which
is their "competitor".

Just so we have the facts right, although it does not change the
substance of the problem.

I'll be in touch tomorrow to let you know how this goes.

cheers,
