<pre>Hey all,

Thought it would be good to share some information about the online forum that we're hosting tomorrow, Wednesday 25th April at 9am PT.

We'll be taking a look at what's new in Oracle Solaris since the launch of Oracle Solaris 11 in November last year. We have a pretty exciting line up of speakers and a great opportunity to ask questions with a live Q&amp;A throughout the morning sessions with a number of Oracle Solaris engineers participating.

9 AM PT: Keynote: Oracle Solaris - Strategy and Update
Markus Flierl, VP Oracle Solaris core technology

9:40 a.m. PT: Oracle Solaris 11: Extreme Engineering - A Technical Update
Dan Price and Bart Smaalders, Oracle Solaris engineering
Dan and Bart discuss not only the key features of Oracle Solaris 11 today, but also give some insights into what Solaris engineering is working on for future updates.

10:20 AM PT: Customers and Partners: Why We Moved to Oracle Solaris 11
Interviews and discussions with various customers and commercial software developers

<pre>Hi all,

I've the next Jumpstart profile for my old Solaris 10 Update 7 boxes:

install_type initial_install
system_type standalone
partitioning explicit
filesys rootdisk.s0 8192 /
filesys rootdisk.s1 4096 swap
filesys rootdisk.s3 4096 /home
filesys rootdisk.s4 4096 /var
filesys rootdisk.s7 free unnamed
[...]

NOTE: A zpool named 'zones' will be created using the slide 7 of the
same disk. For legacy, business and backward compatibility reasons, I
cannot modify this script.

What I want to achieve is use another zpool (let's call it rpool) for
all the / FS (so migrate from UFS to ZFS in root). So, I'm trying, for
example this one:

install_type initial_install
system_type standalone
partitioning explicit
fdisk c1t0d0s0 otheros 24000
fdisk c1t0d0s7 otheros maxfree
root_device c1t0d0s0
pool rpool 20G 4G 4G c1t0d0s0
bootenv installbe bename s10_u10

The key here is clear:

- I need to create just two slices (0 and 7). 0 will be used to create
'rpool' zpool and 7 will be used to create 'zones' zpool. Th</pre>

Hi guys,

I thought I would look into moving from running 2 naming services (LDAP
and AD) and transferring to AD.
I see I have two options:

1) Setup the "NIS unix service on Windows" and use ldapclient to point
to AD server.
This looks a good solution which I see many people have tried, but
the only downfall is I would lose the automount maps, which I can see
how they can be import into AD.

2) Use the Solaris 11 nss_ad Naming Service module.
This may work, but I have had no luck yet, so just wonder if any
one has got it working yet, since Oracle Support and the internet does
not have any information about it! I am using oracle.com doc site:
http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E23824_01/html/821-1455/adsetup-10.html#scrolltoc

When I try to search for a line that ends with a period using the "ed"

/\.$/
?

it returns the question mark(?), however when i executed the same

it works:

/\.$/

Wondering if ed in solaris 11 was changed to behave this way or i need
to make changes to a config file so it will
function same as centos and OI 151a?

<pre>This doc is pretty good but it is unclear that the services are
started automatically so I added the text below.

In addition, the SMB server services must be started manually so
I added that text as well.

Will, I passed your feedback along to the NFS writer.

Thanks,

Cindy

In the new sharing section:

In general, the NFS server services are not started until the sharenfs
property is set on a defined share. If you set the sharenfs property on
the NFS share, the NFS services are started automatically

After you define an SMB share and set the sharesmb property on the SMB
share, you must enable the SMB server services manually.

# svcadm enable -r smb/server

In the legacy sharing section:

Legacy sharing syntax is still supported. The NFS server services are
started automatically when the share is created.

Seems like a doc bug should be opened against the Oracle Solaris
sysadmin guide as it doesn't discuss this when describing how to start

<pre>Hi Cindy,

Your response and this page helped immensely.

http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E23824_01/html/821-1448/gayne.html#scrolltoc

You were right, I had no shares set up and was struggling to find the correct order in which to configure things using a combination of different Solaris docs and stuff online… was embarrassingly confused. Taking a while to wrap my head around just the Solaris 11 basics, but enjoying it so far and looking forward to being able to deploy a ZFS solution in the near future. Thanks for the help!

<pre>Hi Anh,

I'm unclear what else might be going on but maybe we should go
back to some basics. In general, the NFS services don't start
up unless something is shared. See the example below.

Failing that, did you review the nfs-server log to identify
what the problem is:

# more /var/svc/log/network-nfs-server:default.log

Thanks,

Cindy

Nothing is shared so services aren't running:

# share
# zfs get share
# svcs -a | grep nfs
disabled 16:15:02 svc:/network/nfs/client:default
disabled 16:15:08 svc:/network/nfs/server:default
disabled 16:15:53 svc:/network/nfs/rquota:default
online 16:16:02 svc:/network/nfs/status:default
online 16:16:03 svc:/network/nfs/cbd:default
online 16:16:03 svc:/network/nfs/mapid:default
online 16:16:03 svc:/network/nfs/nlockmgr:default

Create a legacy share. For example:

# share -F nfs /tank/cindy
# share
tank_cindy /tank/cindy nfs sec=sys,rw

Check the services:

# svcs -a | grep nfs
disabled 16:15:02 svc:/networ</pre>
