The problem arose from my messing around with the build system. I
wanted to have multiple builds from the same source tree, so I had:

$HOME/haiku/buildtools -- Linux buildtool checkout
$HOME/haiku/source -- Haiku source checkout
$HOME/haiku/dickless -- my build 1 hierarchy
$HOME/haiku/HP-laptop -- my build 2 hierarchy etc.

Then each of $HOME/haiku/dickless etc. contain a load of symlinks
to ../source/3rdparty, ../source/headers etc. but what ended up
happening was that ../source/Jamfile included itself, hence unbounded
recursion.

So what I'm doing now is what I think is supposed to be the way it
works: create $HOME/haiku/dickless etc. empty and
run ../source/configure in it. That's running now.

(OBTW: dickless because it's a diskless thin client, geddit. My
theory is that Haiku is 'light' enough to run reasonably on this Atom
N280. If I could get an X server running I'd switch right now)

I have worked at a several non-profit organizations and learned how non-profits
successfully raise money through donations.

The #1 way to successfully raise money is to ask for it :-)

There are a few other things to help optimize the process:
1) Be very clear about communicating your mission statement
2) Be very clear about communicating about how you will use the money to
further your mission
3) Be clear about what happens if people do not donate to your organization
4) Make it easy for people to donate
5) Reach out individually to ask for contributions
6) Get people to donate on a regular basis, on monthly installments, not one-time-only

But really, if you don't ask for donations, you won't get as many. I would like to propose
that Haiku have an official fund raiser. Matt, can we get in touch to discuss?

Andrew

I see it a little bit problematic to add flattr without any warning, as only about 80% of the donations would actually go to Haiku, as there's a 10% flattr fee and a payout fee. I think there should be a warning to encourage donors to donate by other means. Just a flattr button on the homepage does not make the donor think about the best way to donate the money.

Also, there's a privacy problem with the flattr button on the homepage:
&amp;lt;img src="http://api.flattr.com/button/flattr-badge-large.png" alt="Flattr this" title="Flattr this" border="0"&amp;gt;

This means flattr can track all users of the Haiku Homepage. As this is already the static button that does not show the number of flattrs, there's no reason to not copy that png and have it local.

    <description>&lt;pre&gt;Hi everybody!

This weekend, several donation methods have been added to give you
more flexibility in how you can help raise funds for HAIKU. They
include Bitcoin, Goodsearch, and Flattr and are each mentioned on my
blog http://www.haiku-os.org/blog/mmadia

The notion of many hands working on one issue is at the core of open
source development. Fund raising can be viewed the same way -- every
bit collected helps Haiku, Inc.'s ability to fund development and
propel Haiku towards and beyond R1.

We hope that you are encouraged to help where ever you can, whether it
be in the form of bug reports, code submittal, translations, or
helping to raise funds.

goodsearch: http://www.goodsearch.com/?charityid=haiku
flattr: http://flattr.com/thing/1335767/Haiku-Inc-

Thank you all for helping Haiku come as far as it has today!

Unfortunately doesn't work anymore on Haiku (also on Alpha 4.1), until
today, because i've recompiled to achieve compatibility with Haiku,
and i have also made some improvements. LockWorkstation provides a
graphical login screen to Haiku (with new look thanks to WonderBrush
;-), to protect/restrict the accesses. I have also added the ability
(using bash scripting) to record all accesses in a log file.
If someone will download this app, let me know if your monitor
resolution is included with the app; otherwise mail me, i'll provide
you a login screen using the appropriate monitor resolution :-)

Yes.

We are using something similar to Nagios, actually: collectd. That's where we
get the info from that's shown on the server-stats page. Additionally, smartd
would send out mails when it encounters disk problems. The problem this time
was just that smartd wasn't running anymore. The latter has been fixed by
telling systemd to restart it automatically, so next time around we should
get warned as soon as the disks themselves notice something fishy.

We are already sending out those kind of mails to the mailing list
haiku-sysadmin at freelists.org. If you're interested in the admin-related
work, please subscribe there (or just look at the archives) and you'll get a
better idea about what's going on.

cheers,
Oliver
