I have an almost identical SIMM. I just trimmed the first two rows of the

If anyone's keeping score, the 128MB SIMM arrived and it is working. The only problem: it's too tall to clear the heatsink on the 68040 by a few mm. I ran it without the heatsink for a few minutes just to test and it wasn't getting particularly hot, but I expect I'll need to rig up a smaller heatsink from my box of bits. Especially before I ask it to chew on pkgsrc again. But, so far so good!

ISTR (most) Macs are doing fine with EDO RAMs which tend to be cheaper than
FPM, especially in bigger sizes. My Quadra 650s have EDO memory; I'd have

Thanks for the responses everyone. I will take a punt on a 128 MB SIMM, there are a few on eBay for not too much money. Of course I will report any success or failure.

Incidentally, I'm really happy with how well NetBSD works on this old Mac, it was the first BSD system I set up and it's been running NetBSD 2.0 since around 2006. Having half-forgotten about it since then, I finally did an upgrade from 2.0 to 6.0.1 last weekend and it went really smoothly. Impressive.

I suspect pcre may use C++, which uses CXX flags.

Could you try adding the following to mk.conf:

CFLAGS+=-O1 # for c
CXXFLAGS+=-O1  # for c++
MAKE_FLAGS+=-O1 # For imake

In each case the line is adding (the +=) "-O1" to the existing compiler options.

The default compiler optimisation option is -O2 (For optimise very
hard, and trade off large quantities of memory and time compiling for
small runtime gains).

-O1 is optimise relatively well, but do not spend large quantities of
memory and compile time

-O0 is do not optimise at all, which gives the fastest compile, but
definitely worse runtime performance.

The assumption is that the optimizer uses a lot of memory. But you'd need
to replace the packages' default optimization level to see an effect.

First and best thing you could do is probably looking for a 64 MB SIMM (I
don't know if 72 pin SIMMs ever came in 128 MB a piece). Borrowing from an
old Volkswagen saying, memory is irreplaceable, except by more memory.

Second, you could grow your swap partition, or add a second disk with
another swap partition. But swap is slow, and at twice the RAM size, you
are looking at diminishing returns.

Let us know how it's going.

I'm trying to build lighttpd from pkgsrc on my Mac LC 475 which has 32MB RAM and 50MB swap. I get as far as building pcre, where the build stops. From this log message:

UVM: pid 29033 (cc1), uid 0 killed: out of swap

I gather that I'm running out of available memory. I read somewhere that putting CFLAGS+=-O0 in /etc/mk.conf would help, but it didn't have any effect (and I don't understand what it would do).

I realise that this probably isn't a mac68k specific problem, but I reasoned that many people on this list will have systems with small amounts of RAM and might be willing to offer advice.

Regards,
James.

Almost.

Given a proper dhcpd configuration, the Booter will fetch a kernel image
over the network, which can then mount its root over NFS. The mac68k list
archive should have instructions; www.netbsd.org has details on how to set
up the server side for netbooting.

You don't, unless somebody teaches the booter to work with System 6. Even a
pared-down System 7 with MacTCP and the Booter is too big for a 1.4 MB
floppy.

Note that OpenTransport (v1.3 is the last version to run on mac68k) is
considerably faster for netbooting than MacTCP.

I don't qualify as the former, but I guess you may want to look at the
call to check_video() in src/sys/arch/mac68k/mac68k/machdep.c (whichever
of those you hit, or maybe you need to add another case for your machine).

IIRC the bootloader can load the kernel via http (but its been some time
since I fought with it). So you'd only need a OS 7 or 8 with the bootloader
on floopy, a dhcp server and the kernel on a local web server somewhere.

The kernel can do dhcp/NFS itself if configured for "root on le0 type nfs".
