IIRC it was not called but assigned to bus_space_tag members for
DCEXT bus. Anyway, it was private patches that should not be committed.

<pre>

According to my old memo:

- it's better to have external 5V power source
(rather than using Vcc from DC)
- Vcc and ground lines might be weak and needs more capacitors
- DC connector P9 should be NC and P12 should be GND
- IDE P1 (reset) needs some power on reset signal
- CPLD P50 (interrupt) should be connected to DC P13, not P8
- ISA IRQ lines should have pulldown
- It's better to ISA IRQ 5,9,10,11 rather than 3,4,6 etc
- ISA A14 and A15 in the patern might be swapped? (not sure)

I don't think it's worth to maintain drivers that can't be
confirmed on real hardware, i.e. no fixed specifications.
For example, ISA interrupt mappings are changed for my DCEXT mod.

It's enough to maintain private patches for private hardware,
unless it has fixed and written skematics and/or a certain
number of devices are actually manufactured, like
Neptune-X for x68k or EtherNEC and SMC_TT for atari.

Would you have any details on what had to be fixed to make the DCEXT board run?

Also, would you have any objections to the patches being committed to
NetBSD - obviously the audience is very limited, but having the
patched in-tree might encourage more people to play with them.

(I ran the trivial patch update to -current, just to see :)

<pre>I've been playing with writing a simple shell script to create
bootable NetBSD CD-images, with ramdisk kernels or full
root-on-iso9660 filesystem live CDs.

I've just pushed a new version of dc-burn-netbsd
https://github.com/abs0/dc-burn-netbsd which has a number of
potentially interesting changes
- create a Dreamcast live CD image "dc-burn-netbsd -k GENERIC -r base"
- burn the image to CD, or run under the gxemul emulator (-e)

It requires some of Marcus Comstedt's tools, so it is best installed
as part of the dc-tools pkgsrc package
http://pkgsrc.se/sysutils/dc-tools (1.3 or later). If you are not
using pkgsrc then it just expects scramble and makeip in the path as
dc-scramble and dc-makeip.

Note - if you are running NetBSD/dreamcast under gxemul you will
probably want gxemul-0.6.0nb3 or later from pkgsrc, which has some
fixes for creating the fake CD-Rom TOC, or apply the following to
gxemul-0.6.0 http://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/misc/abs/gxemul/patch-src_devices_dev__dreamcast__gdrom.cc

<pre>Just found a very interesting Russian site discussing Dreamshell - a
homebrew OS for the Dreamcast.

They have some very nice hardware pages, including schematics for:

- serial to SD adaptor:
http://translate.google.com/translate?sl=ru&amp;tl=en&amp;u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.dc-swat.ru%2Fblog%2Fhardware%2F14.html
easily available pre-built (google "dreamcast dreamshell sd") online

- serial to Ethernet adaptor
http://translate.google.com/translate?sl=ru&amp;tl=en&amp;u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.dc-swat.ru%2Fblog%2Fhardware%2F15.html

Obviously the SD serial adaptor is going to be slower than directly
attached hardware, but people are reporting 650KBytes/sec write speed
(out of a theoretical 1.5Mbytes/sec, which isn't bad for a $20 shipped
to your door adaptor :)

<pre>
I actually did use a MAX232, at least partially because I had it on
hand. The "few discretes" level-shifted the voltages to the 3.3V the
DC expects. I didn't mind doing so, because in my experience (and it
turned out to be so here too), a MAX232 always gets the levels
backwards, so they need inverting. I usually use discretes for this
(occasionally an '04); it turned out to be no big deal to use the same
transistors for both level-shifting and inverting.

At least that's how I remember it. That circuit has been packaged up
in a plastic box for quite a while now; I should probably open it and
see how accurate my memory is.
