removing files of a given type from the catalog

<pre>I wondered if a large number of font files I recently copied onto my
machine was slowing down Quicksilver's cataloging. While I evaluate these
fonts prior to installing them they are in several folders on my desktop.
Quicksilver currently catalogs to a depth of 7 on my desktop. So in the
Catalog pane I opened the information drawer for the Desktop folder, and
entered .otf and .ttf in the "Exclude types:" field. Quicksilver recognized
the file types as it replaced the extension I typed by a "button" of sorts
with the name of the file type on it and what looks like the arrow
signifying a pull-down menu (though nothing pulls down when I click).

Anyway, I thought this would remove these two filetypes from the catalog,
but it did no such thing. Have I prevented it from indexing any new font
files but not removed the ones already indexed from the catalog? If so, how
do I remove them so they don't clutter up my results?

<pre>

I’ve never heard a similar report from anyone else with an SSD (and I’ve had two myself) so I doubt it. I even have “Put hard disks to sleep when possible” enabled in Energy Saver prefs. Never a delay.

Even spinning disks tend not to be a problem when they’re built-in. It’s almost always an external drive. I don’t have any other theories.

The best thing I can suggest is to try to sample the process when this happens. That is, go into Activity Monitor, select Quicksilver, then click Sample Process. You might need to keep Activity Monitor running with Quicksilver selected to catch it in time.

<pre>Rob - thanks, but that's not it, as there is no external drive connected.
It has happened even when I'm not connected to a wireless network, just
while I was making some notes in the passenger seat of the car. Could it be
an SSD thing? Are there some patterns of use that could make an SSD
unresponsive to QS but not to other applications? The laptop is running
very well otherwise.

Instead of launching the installer from the DMG, I copied it in the

Quicksilver is almost certainly waiting for a sleeping (external?) hard drive to wake up.

There have been three releases since then, though that won’t make a difference for this particular problem. The latest is 1.0.0.

<pre>Hi, is this a known issue, and is there a fix: it happens at least a couple
of times a day on my MacBook Air running 10.7 (sometimes when I come back
to it after it's been resting for a while but also sometimes in the middle
of a very active work session with 7 or 8 applications running) that I hit
my QS hot key (command-space) and... nothing happens. Usually I hit it
again a second time, and still nothing. Then, whether I sit and wait doing
nothing, or start to do something else (open a folder in the Finder, switch
to another window), without fail 10 or 15 seconds later the QS interface
will pop up and rapidly disappear again. If I tried my hotkey twice, it
does this twice in quick succession. And always after this happens if I hit
the hotkey combination again, QS is immediately responsive, like it has
woken up properly now. I have version beta-69. It hasn't been doing this
for long, maybe a couple of weeks. I don't recall changing anything
significant on my computer. Thanks for pointers to any</pre>

Oh, duh! Quicksilver Selection. Most people set that up with “Current Application”, which is what I was thinking of. In that case, I think you just have to choose between the trigger, or being able to select by word in text entry mode.

Not globally. It would probably annoy users since I’m guessing there are some hacks that wouldn’t be possible.

Each individual action can decide what to do with unexpected types of objects. Very few explicitly check types, but they usually act on the data associated with a particular type, so if that type is missing, nothing happens.
