Hello,

I'd like to share the following excerpt of the latest Genode-Labs
newsletter with you:

Join us at Genode's Hack'n Hike event
-------------------------------------

In spring of 2012, we held the first instance of the Genode Hack'n
Hike, which were wonderful days full of hacking, relaxing, brain-
storming, and enjoying the magnificent nature of the Saxon Switzerland
together. From the feedback we got from the attendees, it goes
without saying that this should not stay a singular event, but
rather be the prelude of a tradition. Hence, we have fixed the date
for this year's Hack'n Hike:

 Begin: Wednesday, September 11
 End: Monday, September 16

We extended the duration of the event over that of last year's.
Whether you'd like to drop by for just a few hours, or you'd like to
stay for the whole time, you are welcome to join in. Genode Labs
will sponsor the accommodation. So don't worry too much about the
costs.

As of now, we haven't finalized the decision about the venue, but
you can be sure tha

when we released the first version of the Genode OS Framework four
years ago, a few people recognized the potential of the technology
but considered Genode largely as a research endeavor, which was
probably right at that time. Now, four years of dedication and 16
releases later, Genode has evolved to a comprehensive and useful
framework that increasingly captures the interest of the "real
world". Over the course of the last year, we learned about several
industrial research organizations who picked up our work to build
upon, received inquiries about licensing our technology for the
use in products, and observed increased public interest in the
prospects Genode promises with regard to privacy and security.

The most significant event for the project during the past year,
however, was our move to liberate its development process and

I am happy to announce the version 12.02 of the Genode OS Framework.
This release is something special because it represents the first
version conducted with our new open development process.

The framework's additions and improvements were primarily motivated by
our road map for 2012. For example, the release comes with the first
bits of our device-driver manager dubbed d3m, it enables the interactive
execution of a Bash shell to spawn coreutils, and it features the port
of a PDF rendering engine.

With regard to the base API, the most noteworthy additions are a new
framework API for accessing memory-mapped I/O registers more safely and
API support for reusing services as sandboxed libraries.

Summary of the release notes:

* Base framework, low-level OS infrastructure
 * RPC framework refinements
 * API support for enslaving services
 * Support for resizable framebuffers
 * New MMIO access framework
 * Enhanced support for Genode used as component framework on Linux
* New and updated libraries
 * Qt4

Steps towards an open development process

Hello everyone,

over the past four years, the Genode OS Framework has seen rapid
progress. Skimming over the release notes of the past releases makes me
very proud. It is clear that the project's development is going stronger
than ever. However, at the same time, I recognize that progress on a
technical level is only one part of a successful Open-Source project. A
certainly even more important part is the participation of a diverse
community. This is where our project is vastly underdeveloped. By
continuing the development at status quo, Genode will continue to
steadily improve but it will not be able to capture a significant
position in the operating-systems world. Instead, it will possibly
remain a curiosity. Therefore, we Genode developers regard the
transition of our work to an open and transparent development process as
the next big challenge we want to tackle.

Review of the situation

Even though Genode is an Open-Source project, its development has been
pursued largely behind the closed doors of ou

I am very happy to announce the release of Genode version 11.11. With
this version, we explored various opportunities to combine the Genode
architecture with virtualization techniques. The topics range from
enabling faithful virtualization of x86 PC hardware, over
paravirtualized Android, to our custom OS-level and application-level
virtualization approaches. The work on these topics materialized in the
form of many improvements of the framework.

To name a few, the new version features the GDB debugging facility as
announced earlier on this mailing list, the integration of the Vancouver
virtual machine monitor, the support of running Android based on the
work of the L4Android project, and the new ability to execute complex
command-line based UNIX software (i.e., VIM) natively on Genode.

For regular developers, our new free-standing tool chain significantly
improves the situation when developing for different architectures. In
particular, this new tool chain alleviates the need for using
CodeSourcery tools

The multiserver, microkernel-based operating systems are going to have a
dedicated devroom at FOSDEM [0] 2012. The event will take place in
Brussels during the weekend of February 4 and 5, 2012.

The projects that originally declared interest in the devroom are:

GNU Hurd[1]

The 11.08 release brings unified workflows for all base platforms with a
streamlined tooling support, enhanced documentation, and a new
quality-assurance infrastructure as well as some functional additions.

With the version 11.08, the framework relieves the burden of using
distinct base platforms with Genode by introducing a unified way to
download, build, and use each of the kernels with Genode's user-level
infrastructure. The new tools empower users of the framework to
instantly change the underlying kernel without the need to know the
peculiarities of the respective kernels. Using microkernels has never
been easier.

The second challenge of translating each kernel's specific behaviour to
the framework's unified API longs for an automated testing
infrastructure that systematically exercises all the various facets of
the API on all base platforms. The new version introduces the tooling
support especially designed for conducting such quality-assurance measures.

Speaking of functional enhancements, the work

Announcement: Genode OS Framework version 11.05 released

The version 11.05 of the Genode OS Framework has just been
published and brings along many new things to explore.

Our work on this release was motivated by two main goals,
advancing the degree of support for the platforms introduced
with the previous release and reconsidering one of the most
fundamental base APIs of the framework, namely the inter-process
communication API.

The traditional IPC and client-server APIs of Genode served us
well over the last five years and have never been significantly
changed. However, during this time period, we gathered plenty of
experience about how those APIs are used in practice and where
their limitations lie. Some aspects such as the lack of type
safety had been repeatedly criticised whereas other supposedly
great features remained largely unused. Now, the right time has
come to apply our gathered experience for re-approaching the
problem. The result is a brand new RPC API that facilitates type
safety and ease of use while sticking to the use of no other
tool than the

Hello,

the video material of my talk at the last year's Software Freedom Day
event in Amsterdam was just published by Bas de Lange. The talk covers
background information about Genode Labs, introduces the high-level
Genode OS architecture, and demonstrates the concepts live.

Announcement: Genode OS Framework version 11.02 released

We are happy to announce the release of the version 11.02 of the Genode
OS Framework.

The development is this version was primarily focused on further
expanding the platform support of the framework. We are excited about
the following three significant improvements in this area.

First, we introduced support for the Fiasco.OC kernel, which is a modern
capability-based microkernel developed at the Dresden University of
Technology and published under GPLv2. Fiasco.OC provides a rich set of
features, most notably kernel support for user-level object capabilities
(hence the suffix "OC"), multi-processor support, and comprehensive
support for the x86_32, x86_64, and ARM architectures. For more
information on Fiasco.OC visit

Second, we upgraded the support for the NOVA hypervisor to version 0.3,
and thereby, promoted the NOVA version of Genode to cover the entire
Genode API. So, NOVA can now be recommended as base platform for Genode
without reservations. The project website

Genode Live CD 10.11 released

The Genode project proudly presents a bootable live CD representing the
current state of the Genode OS Framework. Features like running Linux as
browser plugin, 3D hardware acceleration, sound support, and a complete
networking infrastructure are incorporated to form a single coherent setup.

The live CD boots in less than 10 seconds (on VirtualBox) into a a fully
functional GUI with a selection of five demo subsystems. Each subsystem
highlights a different aspect of the framework. A paravirtualized Linux,
seamlessly integrated into Genode's native Nitpicker GUI, can be found right
next to native Qt4/Webkit applications. The port of the Arora web browser
stands out for featuring a plugin that can execute arbitrary Genode
subsystems in a secure way. This tech demo features multiple browser-embedded
application including a complete Linux system, streaming a disk image live
over HTTP from a web server. Another subsystem runs the famous gears OpenGL
demo via the native port of Gallium3D/Mesa, offerin
