Agree. And I think this feature is in demand, taking into account
growing number of jurisdictions, where a person could be legally
obliged to surrender keys/passwords.

That was my first guest too, but in that case I'd much prefer to have
this implemented without the need of storing metadata outside. I even
started implementing it some time ago, but run out of time before it was
done and dropped it.

To ensure plausible deniability using proposed change one has to store
metadata on removable device (like USB stick) and always remember to
remove it once GELI provider is attached. This requirement can be
avoided and avoiding it would significantly extend number of potential
users.

I can't speak for Mr Romero, but I imagine what he's after is plausible 
deniability.  The GELI metadata on a volume unambiguously declares it to 
be encrypted data.

Properly implemented, I think this could be a worthwhile enhancement for 
certain applications or circumstances where one may not wish to invite 
further scrutiny.

I don't mean to discourage you, but every additional complexity comes at
risk and it case of GELI this is security risk. What is missing in your
work is explanation how it that useful for the users? How do you use it?
First I need to understand and be convinced that this functionality is
generally useful and thus is worth additional complexity and risk.

The MBR standard specifies alignment to cylinders.  gpart complies with 
that.  It's like -a always goes to 63.  Other operating systems are not 
as strict, which at this point makes it easier for their users.

As far as I know, the only way to align MBR partitions on FreeBSD is by 
entering manual values to fdisk(8).

Could gpart align MBR primary partiton at 4K?

 I'm trying to format external Extended Format drive to FAT32 under
 FreeBSD 9.1-STABLE

 I've created MBR scheme, but when I try to create primary partition
 I get:

da0s1 added, but partition is not aligned on 4096 bytes

 Why?

 According to "Using Advanced disks for old OSes like WinCP" guides it
is possible to 4K-align MBR partition, but all these guides are
windows-centric...

i want to enable journaling in my FreeBSD8.2. in freebsd handbook,
journaling is done in single user mode by unmount desired partition and set
journal for it by "gjournal label" command.
this manual is ok and works well far all partitions except root because
root partition can not be unmounted in single user mode.

i try different ways to set journaling for my root such as : do
partitioning in by gpart in fixit mode and then try to set journaling for
my root in this mode. but error occurred and journaling is not done.

please let me know what is the correct way to set journaling for my root
partition? do it in single user mode or fixit mode? how?
