Some background info...Verisign has been deploying FreeBSD for
approximately 3 years now and, in that time, several colleagues wanted to
give back to the community. I attended MeetBSD 2012 as my first
BSD-related conference where the idea of hosting a conference entered my
mind. I put it into action after discussing it with other conference
organizers, colleagues, and fellow FreeBSD enthusiasts.

So, simply stated, we are doing this as as a service to the FreeBSD
community.

No discouragement intended to Vincent (Rick) M, who I guess has
probably worked hard to get his comany to fund something that will
hopefuly bring useful synergy, but ..

The URL &amp; beyond didn't seem to include why one commercial company
agreed to pay &amp; host a BSD conference alone, when they could chip
in with other companies to be one of several funders for a conference
that would be vendor neutral ?

The 8 line signature from corporate lawyers does not allay scepticism.

Cheers,

<pre>Greetings,

About a week ago, I sent out a request for interviews with members of
the FreeBSD community. I'd like you all to know that I'm still seeking
additional interviews. If you're interested in sharing your passion for
FreeBSD with a younger audience, please respond to me via private email.

A big thank-you goes out to Eitan Adler (eadler&lt; at &gt;) for responding to my
request last week! Your help is appreciated!

I know that we're all busy people, especially with the 8.4 release and
the recent ports slush going on. With this consideration, the interview
itself will simply consist of a few back-and-forth questions via email.
This should take no longer than 30 minutes total.

In particular, I'm looking for developers, contributors, and other
active members of the community. If you're reading this, you are more
than qualified to respond!

Thanks,
Kevin Zheng

<pre>Greetings,

As part of a community awareness project at our school, I've chosen to
give a presentation about the FreeBSD Project. I would love to share my
passion about FreeBSD with my classmates.

In addition to my presentation, I would like to include 2-3 interviews
from members of the community. The idea is to highlight the 'personal'
aspect of the community; for instance, I'm interested why everyone is
involved in the project in some way or another.

For my project, I would like at least two interviews; more are
definitely welcome! I'm looking to interview active members of the
project, be it a committer, a core team member, someone from the
Foundation, or even an occasional contributor (like me!).

Those who are interested should reply to me via private email with a
brief self-introduction. Based on your preference, I will arrange to
interview you via phone or email. The interview itself shouldn't take
more than 15 minutes.

If you're hesitating, remember that anyone reading this message is more

It seems that Debian-based distributions do not have an "All" list , but
only categorized lists .

Thank you very much .

Yes and no. FreeBSD ships headers, static libraries, debugging symbols
etc. as part of base, and as part of each package. Most Linux
distributions ship these separately and don't install them by default.
However, it's not as complicated as you make it out to be: just run
'apt-get install build-essentials' (Debian, Ubuntu, Mint) or 'yum
groupinstall "Development Tools"' (RHEL, Fedora, CentOS).

Neither statement is correct, and the issue is far too complex to be
summarized in two sentences, or even two paragraphs.

It's as long as it needs to be to express what its authors wish it to
express. If you're in a hurry or have a short attention span, just skip
the preamble and stop when you get to the disclaimer of warranty.

Neither characterization is correct.

(BTW, I'm "a guy from Scandinavia", and so is one of the founders of the
FreeBSD project)

I would think that distributions like PC-BSD would address issues like a

have been out of the Linux world for a while, relying on BSD for my *nix

difference is night and day. Lets take gcc for instance. To install gcc
on BSD, you need the gcc port and a few support packages, such as
readline, gettext, intl, etc... but thats it. On Linux you need gcc,
gcc-devel, gcc-headers, kernel-headers, gcc-libs, a whole lot more
complex. The difference comes from a basic philosophical difference.

BSD IMHO seeks to be truly open source, the license is quick and easy,
and all of the software comes with all sources and headers included.
Even things that are notoriously closed source like Java.

Linux seeks to straddle the line of open and closed source. Maybe it is
to appeal to a wider market of suppliers and user</pre>
