Second, I was going to try to add the new version of hd5 myself to a non-fink build, and I was careless at first and let it use /usr/bin/cc which in fact worked until i got to the netcdf4 part, but then failed, and failed at the HDF5 level when I set CC=/sw/bin/gcc-4 (which in my fink is gcc48-compiler). According to the docs, the ncdump that comes with netcdf4 should be able to read .dods files, but in testing with the present version in fink with .dods files from two different sources, it fails. I am not certain where the error is here, whether it is Mac specific or in the netcdf code, and whether the new hdf5 would make a difference. I have copied Dennis from Unidata on this also. Also, as a favor can a double check be made that both the present netcdf4 and netcdf4 fortran will link against this, or whether I will need to do a rebuild (I believe this was the case in one update to the hdf5 package).
