Program Evaluation & Design Workshop, which will take place in Budapest,
June 22-23. Applications close at 12 AM PST May 17.*

[Wikimedia IE] Interview to help improve Wikipedia's deletionprocess?

My name is Jodi Schneider, I'm a researcher at the National University of
Ireland, Galway.

I'm studying Wikipedia's deletion discussions and am looking for
Wikipedians to interview about the deletion process. I envision a 30 minute
skype or phone conversation. I'm interested in learning about your
experiences with Wikipedia, and especially article deletion. You can read

Realising the Opportunities of Digital Humanities

A workshop jointly organised by:

Digital Repository of Ireland (DRI)
Digital Enterprise Research Institute (DERI)
Digital Humanities Observatory (DHO)
Digital Research Infrastructure for the Arts and Humanities (DARIAH-EU)

The focus of this event is to engage academia, industry, cultural
institutions and public bodies to identify the key research challenges in
digital humanities, and to further build the academic-industry partnerships
that will enable adoption of digital humanities skills, technologies and
tools. This focus will extend to the innovative use of digital humanities
technologies in the public sector demonstrating social benefit, such as the
digitisation of the Irish census and the use of open linked public data.

In a somewhat fortuitous coincidence, the show has just got back in 
touch to see if we have someone. The broadcast would be on Friday 
morning, most likely at 10.10am or 11.10am and they'd like to speak to

I haven't been paying attention to my email for a few weeks owing to a
particularly busy time at work. I had assumed too that I was more of a
"fall back" to Alison and so wasn't actively following up on moderation
requests when they came in.

I'll keep an active eye on them from here on.

I received the below email this week from Today FM, a Dublin-based radio 
station, and their Ray D'Arcy show:

"Hi there,

I hope this finds you well. I'm getting in touch from Today FM in Dublin 
with an interesting question from a listener! It is as follows:

"Hi Ray and Gang!!
Can you fix something for me on fix it friday.....how does wikipedia 
update its information so fast?! i was watching the aintree grand 
national and daryl jacob won the race. I wanted to see how old he was so 
I typed his name into google and got the Wikipedia link and when I 
opened it they had on his page that he was the winner of the 2012 
aintree grand national! literally 2 minutes after he won the race! HOW 
DO THEY DO IT!"

We're hoping to have an answer for Friday's show (9am to 12)"

I've been in touch with the station to suggest that we could get an 
Irish Wikimedian on the show to talk a little about what Wikipedia

It's partly that. They had a question from a listener asking how 
Wikipedia gets up to date so quickly. The listener watched the Grand 
National and wondered how old the winning jockey was, got to his 
Wikipedia page and within two minutes of the end of the race his page 
was updated with a mention of his victory.

There's scope to speak about the Wikipedia in Ireland too, could be a 
good chance to encourage more people to get involved.

canned, though it might be mentioned for 30 seconds in passing in the

The question came up because there was a message from Stevie Benton
(media guy at Wikimedia UK) about a press call from Ireland, stuck in
the mod queue. It occurs to me there might be all manner of things in
the mod queue ... and having a moderator is probably good.

(I'll happily be a mod of last resort, but someone actually in .ie
would be better.)
