Conventional calculator software manipulates numbers. Computer Algebra
Systems (CAS) manipulate symbols. Free software CAS should begin to
replace propriety CAS. One of the most powerful Free Software CAS,
SAGE, is available online.

- certainly gimp has drawbacks. Adobe also has the same- I have
pre-Phohotshop 7 plugins that were wonderful but useless. Kai's Power
Tools got bought by Corel and they destroyed it.

-Besides- all they add is since Adobe bought Macromedia is "we are your

I have a seen a lot of people complain, but I don't know if they actually
represent the meat of Adobe's paying user base.

I use Adobe applications on a daily basis, and a wide variety of them, at
that. The subscription service is actually quite appealing to me, for a
number of reasons. Heck, given my hourly, I probably save $600 a year just
by having the latest version of their software, instead of the one from two
years ago. For my use case, it is all-win.

I have always advocated open source software for people who couldn't afford
Adobe's or Autodesk's offerings. However, most of these applications are
not for me. They have some serious workflow and usability problems, which
are a huge detriment to my productivity. To the extent that I have looked
into fixing any of those problems (which, as a programmer, I am capable of
doing), the communities involved in those projects seem extremely defensive
about the way they are designed.

For example, why is it possible to get GIMP into a state where you can'</pre>

<pre>The site is coming along quite nicely. We are very excited to unveil it to this group. Please join us for this historic event. This is the first serious alternative to time warner, att etc to emerge in a very long time.

We will officially be launching at south by south west, but join us for early access to the site, and a deep dive into a powerful web application. We cover how we built, secured, scaled it, and all of the mapping backend.
