The FSF is ready to take our next step in the campaign to get 50,000
signatures against DRM in HTML. We just finished our organizational sign-on
letter directed at the W3C and its member organizations. We are asking FSFI
and a handful of other close organizations to review it and commit to sign
before we open it up to the many other organizations that have expressed
interest.

Please read the attached sign-on letter and let us know ASAP if FSFI has
any blocking concerns that would prevent you from signing it. If so, we'll
do our best to rapidly make the necessary changes and bounce it

Something useful seems to come out of Microsoft finally. Some study on
cpu failure rates. They say:

"We present the first large-scale analysis of hardware failure rates on
a million consumer PCs. We find that many failures are neither transient
nor independent. Instead, a large portion of hardware induced failures
are recurrent: a machine that crashes from a fault in hardware is up to
two orders of magnitude more likely to crash a second time."

software desktop. It shows why free software works, and why people
work on it.

"I would like to extend my thanks to the gnome team/community for a great last
moment with my dad.

Adrian Hands (my father) wrote the patch above to improve the usability of
gnome for himself and others. You see my dad was suffering from ALS and his
hands were so crippled he could no longer use a keyboard. Thus we used a Darci
usb morse code keyboard emulator to help him type. Even the morse code device
was a struggle as the sensitivity adjustment and positioning of the nice two
paddled key would fall out of whack. I rigged up a pvc cage that wrapped around
his knee and fixed remote switches to the cage so that he could use the
remaining strength in his legs to operate the Darci morse code device. He used
this last bit of body movement to write this patch."

know a lot of translations happened for Tamil.  Similarly while looking for

some observations:  the '/' in GNU/Linux is printed as '\' in the
text.  which may be corrected.  another unfortunate part of the draft
is the cost aspect of the initiative is given greater importance in
the arguments, and the functional importance of the operating system
while comparing GNU/linux with windows.  We should take opportunities
like this to tell the policy makers that freedom of the user is more
important than the cost, while also telling that using free software
is incidentally economical as well.  I have signed the petition.

A Debian Mini Conference is a gathering of debian folks in an area. We
have been having debian meetups for a few years and this time we are
planning conferences in 4 cities across India. More about it at

focus has been to get more people contributing in debian with a
special focus on hands on training in creating and maintaining debian
packages. We will start with introduction of debian - why it is

will have a gpg key signing party - a key component of trust in a
distributed community like debian.

Then move to packaging a sample application explaining various steps
in detail - giving a chance to try it hands on while we explain it.
Once packaging session is over, we encourage every one to take up one
package and start working on it. We will have people who know
