pidgin 2.10.0 & silc-toolkit installation....

<pre>hello

my objective has been to install the latest pidgin build with my list of
plugins plus silc support.

i have managed to add silc support by installing the silc-toolkit.
this required me having to remove libsilc as recommended by silc
documentation cos it stated silc-toolkit functions superseed libsilc, and
i discovered i couldnt install the toolkit due to a dependency issue.
removal of libsilc was required, then readd libpurple.

now i realise i needed some functions / modules provided by silc-client
and this can't be installed cos it says it needs libsilc ?!

reading the faq it states that silc-client isn't included in the toolkit
but they are just examples..?!

what is the exact statement regarding silc-toolkit versus libsilc and what
is required to be installed with pidgin 2.10.0 or future releases?

thanks in advance

I think, it requires a password in case the silc server you are
connecting to is a password protected.
If I try to connect without specifying a password, I get an
check the location of the silc key pair on your computer.Maybe your
pidgin can not read from it.Or you have move it to somewhere else.It
happens with pidgin portable.

I think there is.Search it.I've come across some of them.
You can allow only people with specific keys to connect to the silcd or with
specific IPs or with both.
All is in the silcd configuration file.Read it.And set up the access
restrictions.

how to connect to silcnet with pidgin?

<pre>I'm trying out silc for the first time.

When I go to create a silc account in pidgin, it requires that I enter
a password to use to connect to silcnet. However, I don't see anywhere
on the silcnet website to register a user. Why does it require a
password? If I try to connect without specifying a password, I get an
error "unable to load SILC key pair."

Is there a step by step guide somewhere to explain how to connect to
silcnet via pidgin?

Also, I've set up a private silc server using silcd. How do I register
users for that server? I would like a fixed set of people I know to be
able to connect to my silc server, but to not allow random people on
the internet to connect.

Thanks,
Brendan

<pre>I think the password field is if a silc server requires a password.
You should be able to join silc network without any problems and any
password.I think the public silc network does not require password to join.
Check and make sure that the server name is correct , the port is open -
usually it's TCP port 706 , or if you are in a restricted network that
prevents to connect to a specific remote ports.
Make sure that pidgin connects right to the internet using appropriate
computer environment settings.

In Pidgin account modifier/create window the network field is how you
want to name the silc network.
The connect server field is where you specify the silc server to connect
to which is located in advanced tab of the same window.

do I enter in the password field. I tried finding out if there is a way to
register to a particular network. But there aren't any. Connection without
password does not seem to work. Please help. Some link to a good guide is

<pre>Hi, I have asked many question to those guys from pidgin about the silc
implementation in their client. All I get from them about silc is that
they are not responsible and not in charge of the silc. They use it from
silcnet.org.I do not if it is true or not, but they always redirect
whoever has some questions regarding silc protocol to go and ask silcnet.
So do pidgin compile their own library to be used in their client for
silc protocol or they used precompiled library from silcnet?

All the translations are available on our wiki :

This wiki is a SILC-related wiki, the only rule is that the published
content must be in French. So you can add every important information
you want about SILC.

The dg-sc crew also provides a SILC network : silc.dg-sc.org (TCP 706).

<pre>hi scuzi,

indeed this looks to me like a way to call the key command
which is not supported in pidgin
thanks for the /help listing, indeed key command not there

this looks like a proof that there is no way to call key command
from pidgin and thus not setting the key for the channel
and thanks again for the rest of the details.
i see nothing wrong with the syntax you used in the examples
just they do not work in pidgin

hm, i use silc client and use the /key command to my full satisfaction
sorry to see that it is no worky with pidgin
if it makes you feel better, we can meet in one of the silc networks
i would set the key for a private channel and you may try to join
to test if pidgin can send a key if asked for it.

this is all i know
cu

<pre>
These are the commands I get in pidgin when I type /help

/help
Use "/help &lt;command&gt;" for help on a specific command.
The following commands are available in this context:
ban, call, clear, clearall, cmode, cumode, debug, detach, getkey, help,
info, invite, join, kick, kill, leave, list, me, motd, msg, nick, oper,
part, ping, query, quit, say, stats, topic, umode, whois, whowas.

Interesting things
/help call
call &lt;command&gt;: Call any silc client command

However
/call key
Unknown command: key

I also tried
/call key channel test set secretkey
Unknown command: key channel test set secretkey

and

/call /key channel test set secretkey
Unknown command: /key channel test set secretkey

Pidgin respons when I do
/cmode test +p
admin set channel test modes to: [private]

I do not see the point of setting a private channel if you can not set
the key for it...
