just tested all of the following:

1) Removed the $config['ports_page_default'] line from config.php. The
Ports page then defaults (and highlights) the Details page.

2) Used: $config['ports_page_default'] = "basic/"
    Here the Ports page shows the Basic page with Basic highlighted

3) Used: $config['ports_page_default'] = "details/"
    Here the Ports page shows the Details page with Details highlighted

4) Used: $config['ports_page_default']  = "graphs/bits/"
    Here the Ports page shows the Basic page with nothing highlighted

5) Used: $config['ports_page_default']  = "lsjkdljsklsd"
    Here the Ports page shows the Basic page with nothing highlighted

So, it appears one can toggle between Basic and Details. For anything else,
not sure the correct format to use for the value. Everything else I tried
fell into 5 above.

It used to just be appended to ports page URLs.

OOPS - looks like it does not. The default used to be the Details page and
I wanted Basic, so that is what I had that option set to. Since the Ports
defaults now (apparently) to the Basic view, I assumed it was due to my
setting. However, I just changed it and it had no effect.

Well this that is fascinating and uplifting... also encouraging...   I will
see if I can track down the MIBs for said printers...   Also on the
wishlist are Zebra Label printers for the plant...    But one bridge at a
time...

That said is there some generic way, e.g. adding vendor ID's somewhere so
it will detect and as you say, know to poll with the JetDirect??

Excuse the noobiness...  I am quite green at all this...

Getting it recognized as a printer is probably all that needs to happen.
There isn't that much actual code for toner stuff, just about everyone
uses the Jetdirect OIDs.

In the legend for the interfaces there is Current Average and Maximum.

At the bottom under the interfaces there are two Total rows with four columns.

What actually are the four columns?

I was a little spoiled at my last position where all printers were HP /

We do not use that information.

That stuff is left over from check_mk. We don't use it.
