<pre>If you use a language that reads left-to-right then CLUSTERNAME.QMGRNAME
reflects the from-to relationship and insures no overlapping channels. It
does impose a limit that cluster and QMgr names must be &lt;= 9 chars but
getting rid of the superfluous TO. at least means the limitation is not &lt;=
8 characters.

I also want to make sure our QMgr or cluster names do NOT contain dot
characters as we make these changes. An underscore is okay. Reason is
that if you had a channel APPLE.X.ORANGE it is ambiguous whether it's the
APPLE.X cluster and the ORANGE QMgr or the APPLE cluster and the X.ORANGE
QMgr. A channel name APPLE_X.ORANGE is unambiguous with this rule in
place.

Why is the dot significant and not the underscore? Good question. This
is consistent with other names in WMQ where dots are significant, for
example queue names and wild-card setmqaut profiles.

In favor of what? TO.MYQMGR.MYCLUSTERNAME is what I've been using without issue with overlapping clusters.

Subject: v7.5 Infocenter (was: Is it just me?)

I'm happy to report it's working GREAT! Of course it's internal only right now but rest assured there's a lot of effort in progress to get it ready for release. I'm participating in a workgroup addressing security issues for the v7.5 Infocenter and you are likely to see these start showing up in the v7.1 and v7.0 Infocenters as well. We have limited resources and the primary goal is to adapt the v7.1 Infocenter for v7.5 but within that scope we are adding considerable cross-linking of related concepts and topics, </pre>

glossary and working on consistency of terminology.

Although it is not security-related, I'm also pushing to update some of
the best practices as reflected in the manuals. For example, cluster
channel names like TO.MYQMGR have got to go! After 15 years or however
long its been, I'll be happy to see the last of those PMR-inducing
atrocities, if in fact I'm successful. That remains to be seen.

&gt; Do you know that Adobe recently proposed (seriously) to only
include security updates as part of their paid support for things
like Photoshop,
DreamWeaver and Creative Suite?

Yup. Its called corporate greed (or just plain stupidity).

I didn't mean to imply that people had to use Adode's Reader, it was
just an example. People can use any PDF Reader they wish to use and
there are lots of them out there. :)

There are good and bad things about a public RFE mechanism. One detrimental aspect is that user-generated content is subject to power-law distribution. An early front-runner has a tendency to float to the top for no other reason than that having the most votes attracts more votes.

<pre>Hi,

For anyone who might be interested this is just to let you know that I
have updated the version of MA01 on the supportpac website.

http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg24000647

This has added one or two new options for things like client reconnect
etc.

Points to know about it though

I have not updated the zLinux or z/OS version, there did not seem enough
of a change to justify me trying to find available machines.
At long last I have built a version on iSeries since quite a few of you
have asked for it.

Cheers,
P.

data Lyn mentioned.
But be aware of the huge mass of SMF records.

My colleage formed a nice SAS project out of them. Now they can better find
the causer for a queue filling up.

Hi Blair,

Here is a snippet of the SMF116 class 3 record for a batch job (printed using MP1B), it may contain what you are looking for:

z/OS:MPX1 MQ QMGR:QML1 Time: 2012069 11:45:18.99 Jobname:TEAM09S1
Userid:TEAM09

<pre>Hi,

I don't believe MQ is going to create a log record as such, but MQ does
(depending on configuration) cut SMF records for statistics (type 115) and
accounting (type 116).

SMF accounting (type 116) data should contain at least most of the
information you are looking for.

You can find details of the accounting records in the MQ manuals, at
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/wmqv7/v7r1/topic/com.ibm.mq.doc/zs11950_.htm

As an example, the Common WebSphere MQ SMF Header includes userid,
connection name and connection type information.

Unfortunately, it is not clear from this section of the manual whether the
data includes the job name, and I don't have access to a system to try it
out on a weekend.

Regards,

Neil Casey.

<pre>Blair,

The MQ logs that may be archived do not record anything about connections.

The queue manager can produce events, accounting, and statistics
messages but as far as I know there's nothing for batch adapter
connections.

There are many top MQ experts on this list but you'll probably not get
a response from any of them until Monday.
