Hi everyone,

I have a problem with my FreeNX server in that everything works find except I can't get shadowing to work.

My setup is as follows:

Server OS: Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
FreeXN Version: NXSERVER - Version 3.2.0-74-SVN OS (GPL, using backend: 3.5.0)
Client OS: Windows 7
NX Client: NoMachine NX Client for Windows Version 3.5.0-9

The clients can all connect and disconnect sessions on the server. I have my shadow client configured so the Desktop is set as "Shadow". Once connected I get a list of available sessions. If I select a session and press Attach I get an error message "The NX Client received an error from the server. Please check the details for more information".

I've listed the contents at the bottom of this email.

If I check the suggested session file. The contents of which are:

The issue is that the "minimal installation" doesn't really
work in RHEL

If you install X later it just does its OWN dependencies
so
you don't get all the legacy stuff . . .

Ye O.P. is fedora-ing

so
there may be another mess heading your way . . .

I just did a Centos 6 install ( zimbra ) for a change
instead
of my usual SuSe so I may be joining you . .

Isn't it normal to build/test in a minimal chroot?

I haven't hit this with the Centos rpm, but not sure what different

Hmmm, my name was mentioned ...

Indeed we (RHEL users) did have this very problem of some package
(xorg-x11-fonts-misc to be specific) not installed by default. I'm not
going through all the details but the issue occurred when RHEL went
from 5.x to 6.x. Fortunately we noticed it when RHEL 6.0 was still in
beta and was able to add Requires: to our package. So far I have not
heard any complaints from RHEL/CentOS/SL users... :-)

They solve all the ones that the packager finds ( are missing )
when he/she/it compiles from source and builds the rpm

BUT

If you have "it" installed already because you went for
        workstation
or some such when you first installed
then you won't have it as a "dependency" because
that just means packages differing from base
( i.e. every rpm doesn't list every single other rpm it needs )

Redhat have now produced a mix of "base" configurations,
the smallest of which as far as I can see gives you a non
fuctioning installation which won't install any other
packages so you can't fix it either.

They have also split X up into smaller packages which are
installed by default.

BUT

Things have moved on since nomachine forked X11
so the legacy stuff is installed but is not depended
upon any more.

i.e. if you can miss installing older things now
without hitting a dependency

This means that to produce an accurate list of
dependencies for ev

We can all do that,
because
ssh does X forwarding
so
if you point your DISPLAY at it
xterm hits your session sshd child
and
gets forwarded to your client Xserver

No. It's not FreeNX anyway. It's an nxagent issue.

You could read your log tho' and look for the error message.

Do you have
        xorg-x11-fonts-misc
installed ??

Do you have such a directory as :-
        /usr/share/X11/fonts/misc/fonts.dir
??

All

nxagent is a separate X client ( server in normal speak ) with its
own libraries
so
the fact that your "normal" X works doesn't mean that nxagent
will work too . . .

It could be a number of things. Lets start with . . . .

. . . . what's in the FreeNX log.

You may need to turn logging on in /etc/nxserver/node.conf

i.e.

        NX_LOG_LEVEL=6
        NX_LOG_SECURE=1
        NX_LOGFILE=/var/log/nxserver.log
        SESSION_LOG_CLEAN=0

also do
         sudo touch /var/log/nxserver.log
        sudo chmod 777 /var/log/nxserver.log

Connect to xterm and gnome and send the logging.

Does the client show a disconnect with a 'details' button for its side
of the log? The only other thing I can think of is that the server
side has some invalid session id cached and is trying to resume it but
I thought that was logged somewhere.

I can run Xnest on the problem host

The only real difference between the problem hosts and those that work
is that the bad ones are servers (rack mounted Dells) whereas the working
ones are desktop dells but both have the same installation of fedora. All
have the same window managers installed and are running xdmcp broadcast.

Also Hummingbird exceed works against the all these hosts so it doesn't
quite sound like an X11 problem

running custom config for xterm, I get the !M on the black background
and an xterm on a working machine. On the problem hosts, I still get the
!M on the black background then it disappears with no errors.

I finally figured it out. It was again a problem with the /etc/hosts file,
but I'm not sure why it flipped out.

Well I haven't seen this, however . . .

Yep, all of this looked good, and I verified that my settings were correct.

This proved to be helpful. I could SSH into the server, but I couldn't SSH
locally on the server. I checked my logs and found this:

May 2 01:00:04 chi CRON[10551]: pam_unix(cron:session): session closed for
user username
May 2 01:01:50 chi sshd[10619]: Accepted publickey for nx from [myip] port
[number] ssh2
May 2 01:01:50 chi sshd[10619]: pam_unix(sshd:session): session opened for
user nx by (uid=0)
May 2 01:01:54 chi nxserver[10860]: (nx) Failed login for user=[username]
from IP=[myip]
May 2 01:01:54 chi sshd[10619]: pam_unix(sshd:session): session closed for
user nx

SSH would instantly close when I tried it locally with the following errors:

Connection closed by ::1
Connection closed by 127.0.0.1

So, to fix it, I commented all the IPv6 lines from the hosts file, an

But that doesn't tell you that a gnome session will start correctly
for that user. If you can't test a local console, can you do
something like
Xnest :1 -query localhost in your ssh session? I'm not sure if
fedora still runs xcmcp or if it doesn't, what you do instead to get a
graphic login to start.

OK, so it's probably not a windows problem after all then.

. . . could still be a library file or two . . .

Do the two machines work as local desktop login without NX out of
the picture ??

Are there any other differences specific to these machines ???

Try connecting with xterm instead of gnome

Configure button ( in nxclient )
< general> tab
<Desktop> custom
<settings> button
<run the following command> xterm
