<pre>Hope you get this message on time, This message is coming to you with great depression due to my state of discomfort. Traveled on a short trip with my family to Madrid,Spain but unfortunately we got mugged and robbed at gun point on our way to the hotel where we stayed. All cash, credit cards and few other valuables were taken away.

We've been to the embassy and the police here and they have done the best they can. Presently, we are having some problem sorting our bills here as we need to settle every outstanding before we can return as our return flight leaves in few hours. I am contacting you to ask for a short loan of €1,500 Euro(About $1,950 USD) to settle our bills which I will refund immediately I get my family back home safely. Please let me know if you can help.

Waiting to hear back from you soon.

Thank you.

Marty

<pre>I have been using BNR2 for a good number of years. Unfortunately I recently
had a major hard disk failure and had to reinstall all my programs including
BNR and WindowsXP. After I downloaded all the newsgroups population I then
subscribed to several newsgroups with no problems. I then downloaded a large
number of headers but not nearly all (I'm still on dial-up) and accessed them
successfully. Now my problem: After turning off my system and then (the next day) starting it again the list of subscribed groups was there, however,
their contents were gone. There were zero headers in each group. Did I miss
or miss set some control parameter?

<pre>I don't have a link to the discussion between Jeff and I. Don't really feel like searching honestly but in the link I did provide previously here's a quote from Jeff:

"That is where I plan to someday put the new filtering system that will supercede and replace the current Kill/Want filters."

This was after the posts about the limitation of the current filtering system. He acknowledged that the kill/want filters, while adequate, had limitations. Otherwise why replace with a new filtering system?

Anyway, it's all a moot point now honestly.

<pre>Yup BNR does the job and is why I continue to use it years after development on it has stopped. As for what it "really" needs that's subjective. The authors saw that it could use a few things as did I and acknowledged that.

But it does the job I need it to do and as long as it does it will remain used. However, I acknowledge that others may like to see more features built into their reader of choice which is why I mentioned the only one I'd played with that had some nice features and leave it to them to see whether it has something they want that BNR doesn't have.

Regex is familiar to me. In fact if you look in the Files section you'll see that I contributed a few very simple filters to help beginners.

I use regex at work and used to use it back before the Web when I had to use gopher to search the internet. But it's not something I'd expect the average user to be comfortable with and even some programmers don't like it.

Even with BNR's filtering support it fell short of what I was trying to do and when</pre>

Strange ...my NNTP reader has posts going back to 2005 which must have
been the last time I pruned the posts and I cant find any on
filtering. Other than the .nix version, I might check the Y groups, but
TBH they are too much like hard work to read over news.gMane

I also cant see how this could be an area which BNRx is lacking as it has
almost perfect reg-ex filtering power.

But as NNTP index sites are 10 a penny now good filtering is not something
a NNTP downloader 'really' needs, unless the user cant work reg-ex then I
'spose it could be seen to be lacking.

Also a post from 3 years back cant have any new NNTP downloader info in
it.

As I said in all the many years I have been using BNRx there is nothing
that can come close.

As said the bnr web site is a good place to start...

But as a quick start, get the BNR 3 .exe/install file.

Then you can get the bnr2.ini file from your other (BNR2) install and use
that (COPY it) to save all of the info being put in again, it just needs
to be named BNR3.ini.

Also I have posted many .bat files that allow you to tune the sqLite page
files to the best that your computer can work with, you need teh
sqLite.exe to do this.

What features does NMP have that cant be dont with BNR2/3 ?

I have used every bin downloader there is (over the years) and have yet to
find anything that has things (useful) that BNR cant do.

I understand that the sqLite version (3) needs some tuning to your system
(i.e. its not so fast as a frest install) to get it running faster than
BNR2 but then its unsurpassed IMO. I have had its data base running for
over 15~16 months at a time with no problems, just using my .bat files
every month or 3 to keep the db clean and quick.

<pre>Just use a proxy, like stunnel, and point BNR to that. Takes a little to set up, but not much, and it works very well. You just point stunnel to the newsserver and point BNR to the proxy.

<pre>The only one I found that had the features I like and many I wish BNR had
incorporated is NewsMan Pro

I still use BNR though mainly because I'm familiar with it and it does what I
need.

<pre>Paul,

I generally use Newsbin Pro, which has a fee but lifetime free upgrades,
continued development and technical support.

I accepts input of NZBs and will decode and unpack files, such as
videos, that are posted with RAR parts and par files.

I've been using BNR 2 &amp; 3 forever, but would like to try something else.
Would anyone be kind enough to suggest a suitable replacement?

Thanks much,

Paul

Lenny,
Thanks for the info, I'll keep that on file in case it ever happens again. Given that I've never before encountered this problem in years of using BNR2/3, I'm hopeful that I won't need it again :-)

I downloaded your .bat files some years ago but don't use them any more. Ever since I found the http://www.binsearch.info/ site, I've stopped downloading headers completely for the sites that I'm interested in. This reduces the importance of the databases to the point where deleting them completely (actually, adding .old to the end of the filename)is often a first step in the event of problems.
