As the samples are almost dry they should sound very good with added

even better :)

Thank you for those ideas.
Any chance of upgrading the menu function so that the appearance of the
element which has been selected changes before applying an UP or DOWN? This
would be far more convenient for the user.

By the way, the Earlwood No.3b disposition contains two reversible pistons
which transfer the Positive to either of the two manuals available to the
user. And they change colour to show their state. Also, they can be
activated by assigning (for example) the top note of each manual as a
physical control, if physical pistons are not available for that purpose.

It was the particular function of turning off the stops on the second push

John,

A reversible piston is generally meant for a single stop or coupler. It is
a binary function, insofar as activating can result in (only) two outcomes.
One can toggle Swell to Great, or maybe the big 16' Trombone in the Pedal,
or a 32' Bourdon, etc. Also, one can toggle a Tutti/Full Organ effect,
which seems almost universal on organs with any trace of combination action.

A regular piston (either general or divisional) reproduces a pre-denoted
setting. It is an unary (singular version of binary) function, insofar as

results in whatever you set it to do. If a general piston - let's call it
Piston 1 - is set to engage a Gedeckt 8 and Principal 4, it will engage the
two stops and cancel all others, as they were not set (on Piston 1).
Pressing Piston 1 again will do nothing, as no stops have been changed.
Let's pull out a Mixture III. Pressing Piston 1 will disengage Mixture III,

In the Alpha the solo reed was a Wurlitzer Saxophone, but I have now
had time to do the NR work on the Robert Morton Tuba and so the solo
reed in the Beta is the Tuba. The Saxophone will be back in a later
disposition.

You can download the disposition/soundfonts as a RAR package from:

The download is 267Megs in size and decompresses to 506 megs on your harddrive.

<pre>I was curious about what exactly was meant by “reversible” pistons and the wikipedia says that a reversible piston is piston or toe stud that has the capability to turn OFF the combination of stops that it also has the capability to turn ON. If you hit the same piston a second time after using it once, it turns OFF the combination of stops that have been assigned to that piston.
This is not true of the two Allen organs I play on a regular basis. The piston only serves to turn on the assigned combination of stops. Pushing the piston a second time will get the same set of stops ON.
On pipe organs I have played, the inter-divisional coupler pistons have an OFF piston situated right next to them which uncouples the manuals.

Additionally, they can be useful for a Tutti/Sfz/Full Organ function.
Click - on, click - off, and the graphic "rests" in the false position...
I find what GH mentioned to be the most important reason to have
reversibles - playing aids on the virtual console so one can have an entire
organ on his computer.

Yep, I see. I haven't see a reversible so far in physical world that's why. Greek pipe organs are a bit older and smaller here.
And indeed in digital world and dedicated physical controllers there's no need for. I even dare to say there's no need to actually assign GUI stops to physical buttons (!) = We can use just the combinations. It's FAST and accurate. And more : we can play works for two/three/four manuals where both hands are on the same keyboard with just one keyboard controller and a pedalboard , using just the generals. And in some extreme cases we can use a 61 or 76 keys controller using split function to play a chorale setting with a Rohr8' on the left part and a cornet on the right !

Thanks again,

Click - on, click - off, and the graphic "rests" in the false position...
I find what GH mentioned to be the most important reason to have
reversibles - playing aids on the virtual console so one can have an entire
organ on his computer.

<pre>Hi Panos

A typical (modern) English 3-manual console will have the following "reversible pistons" in addition to the regular Divisional and General combination pistons:

Under the Swell manual: Swell to Pedal
Under the Great manual: Great to Pedal; Swell to Great; Choir to Great
Under the Choir manual: Choir to Pedal; Swell to Choir; Tuba 8'

In addition to the toe pistons (or studs) for combinations it will have the following "reversibles":
To the right of the expression pedals: Great to Pedal
To the left of the expression pedals: Swell to Great

The function of these reversible pistons is to toggle the corresponding stop or coupler, and larger instruments may have other reversibles, such as Bombarde 32' or Double Open Wood 32' etc.

Clearly such playing-aids are useful on a real console, but on a virtual (on-screen) console they are superfluous, since it as arguably easier to click (or touch) the stop or coupler image itself rather than click (or touch) a reversible piston image. Hence the absence of a jO</pre>

<pre>Hi Alex, all good, but (question) :

Why reversible pistons...? There where in use (still are there) in old GrandOrgue/HW1 sets, now I can't see why we need them in jOrgan with all this excellent "midiLearn" function.... Please tell me more about :-)

Best
Panos

Hi all,

Here are links to a disposition on three jOrgan concepts:
1) Reversible Piston
2) Double On/Off Switch (binary selector via two contols)
3) Menu (how to control multiple continous elements via a single set of
incrementers)

http://www.mediafire.com/?6apfxh8ebabiip3 (.zip version)
http://www.mediafire.com/?xjccbuwmycjhbac (.disposition alone)

Note: there is no skin, so don't be confused when it doesn't show up!

Hello,

Here is a calculator.

Use the second from the top, where 1V = 0 db.
Put the percentage you want to convert in the left box in decimal format (e.g. for 70 % put 0.7) and you get the corresponding db value.

If you prefer a table, look here
Does this help?

All the best.

Erik.

Bill, thanks for the information, but it does little good in the case of Vienna soundfont editor. Attenuation settings changes in db are hardly noticeable at less that 10 db increments.

Hi John,

The link below will take you to the article on my website, which will give
you what you want. Note that I updated the article in January, and so you
should consult the SECOND table. At the bottom there is also a link to a
spreadsheet which converts dB to Attenuation Settings and vice versa.
