will do no harm (might even fix it).

Remember Caps are used a LOT to de-couple noise on power supply rails ...
and THAT is what your fault sounds (no pun) like ..

<pre>Thanks for your replies Daniel &amp; Narfman, all great advice.
I have run tests and resets and had no changes. I think the DAC is worth looking at because the noise is on all outputs including headphones, even when all voices are turned off, and I'll get the caps replaced if there's any luck with the DAC.

Thanks again and keep up the great work.

<pre>It may be the DAC or an op amp in the demux/sample and hold part of the outputs. Do the individual outputs and the headphone output have this same noise? I had this happen to a Kawai K5 and bit 16 had a cold solder joint on the DAC. Since you're in N.Z. there's no way I would be able to look at it. I'm in the U.S. :-(

<pre>I'm sorry to hear about your problems. It's difficult to say what is
it, but lot of issues can be repaired if only it's not caused by
special IC failure. As I know Yamaha keeps spare parts only for 10
years, so if there's such failure there's hardly any chance to repair
it (except using of another non-working piece).

First I would try to perform test and reset of the instrument. Maybe
it can help when the problem was caused by software, and it can tell
where is the problem. Have you done this?

Then it's always good to open the machine and reseat all IC's in
sockets, pull out and return all connectors (one by one). If contacts
are oxidized which is quite possible after so many years, this can help.

Recapping can hardly cause some problem, and capacitors are not
expensive, so that's the next step. Problem can be with electrolytic
and tantalum caps. Start with PSU, if this is not enough and there's
still some problem, change electrolytic caps on other boards,
especially those in volta</pre>

<pre>Since there's been a bit of talk about the TX802 lately, especially with regards to replacing the old capacitors, I thought I'd ask if anyone's had the same issue I have.

My machine recently started outputting (on stereo outs, headphones and individual outs) a low-level and digital-sounding noise, as if many notes were going on and off at once.
The noise/notes will change both over time and depending on which patches are selected, which initially had me thinking it must be a chip and therefore unfixable unless I find another TX802. However after testing a little I realized that any notes played via MIDI do not seem to be affected by the noise (they will play normally and louder than the noise) and also if I turn all 8 voices off the noise doesn't change, so maybe it actually is a capacitor issue?

I paid a Yamaha dealer too much money to have a look at and and tell me it's unfixable, without actually being able to tell me which components were the issue.

Anyone experienced something similar (the dealer as</pre>

I uploaded the sysex dumps from the rare TRC-03 ROM cartridge Yamaha made for the TX802 to the YamahaBlackBoxes group. There are 1-32 and 33-64 voices and 1-64 performances all configured to use the internal banks. This cartridge is labeled Percussion and S.E. As we know FM drums and cymbals are usually pretty lame. Some of the electric toms and of course the bells and chimes are outstanding. The special effects are neat using the pitch envelopes and FM trickery.

I'm looking for more patches for this beast. If Ian is still out there can I post your work??? I have some ideas for a few new banks I just need some time. BTW, the smell you may be experiencing may be the De-Oxit on the

smell than my typical linseed oil/Hammond Oil smell after I clean
drawbars with De-Oxit.

Congrats on your success. You have breathed new life into classic electronics.

There was some discussion about sources of electrolytic capacitors here so please share where and how you obtained your new caps for the benefit of the rest of the group.

Thanx,

<pre>Recently I also change all electrolytic and tantalum capacitors in my
numerous machines older than approx. 20 years (including TX802).

Modern electrolytic capacitors are usually smaller than old ones.

Just avoid cheap Chinese. Use better Nichicon, Jamicon or Panasonic
for temperature 105.

<pre>Nice job on the fix!
Isn't it neat the first time you turn on a TX-802
and hear the sound sounds for real that we've been playing
samples or romplers imitating for a long time?
Mine doesn't have any smells, and I had the top off
to check the battery, and powered it on and no smells.
But I do have another module I've had for some time,
and it has the "electric' smell. But it never gets overly hot,
never smokes, or gets the "burning electrical" smell.

<pre>NO.

don't worry.

Just wallow in the 'classic' aroma of real gear.

It's very subtle, but, we've all morophed away from it, to the almost smelless presence of the SMD environment of post 93-ish electronics.

A less well known fact is that the surface area of components has been calculated into the 'power factors' of them. Our old kit has massive surface areas and so it emits massive electrical honk.

Personally, I love it. The only alarm I'd respond to would be if I could smell something burning.

In any case, I didn't break it! It turns on and sounds EFFING GREAT! I'm very very excited!

The power supply still gives off an electrical smell, though not a burning one. It smelled this way before the re-cap, too. Almost like a tube amp smell. Is this natural as the synth heats up or should I worry?
