variety of non-system formats (WOFF, EOT, SVG) and may be subset/etc
for the web, I'm not sure it makes sense to package them for the
system. It might make more sense to package them as regular static web
assets specific to the project, like background JPEG images, and make
a totally separate font package for users to install on their
desktops.

I think it will be good if you can comment on noto-fonts mailing list

<pre>Great!

Noto and Droid do not have the same outlines for Latin/Greek/Cyrillic.
Noto Sans is a little bit wider but not as wide as Open Sans if I
recall correctly.
If documents are set with Droid it would be nice to have the fonts
still available in the future in some way or another.

Noto replaces Droid moving forward, and has far wider coverage and better
hints, and will get new scripts added over time. So perhaps initially have
both, then have Noto obsolete Droid, and add fontconfig rules to that effect...

<pre>Hi Behdad,

While further checking Noto fonts, i found that these fonts are same as
already packaged google-droid-sans-fonts. I have tested following script
fonts.

1. Devanagari: Outline is same in Noto and Droid
2. Tamil : Outline is same in Noto and Droid
3. Armenian: Outline is same in Noto and Droid

Droid looks bit older version 1.02 and Noto is latest version 1.03. Noto
has hinting information while Droid is unhinted.

Considering this, i think we can either keep Droid or Noto in fedora.
Noto has more preference since its latest version.

If you know difference please update me with it.

Announcing release of lohit in web fonts format from upstream

<pre>Hi All,

Last couple of weeks i was working on modifying lohit release
structure to accommodate web file formats. It is complete now. Lohit web
fonts (.woff and .eot) are available for download from [1]

 Tarball name following syntax
lohit-&lt;scipt/language&gt;-web-&lt;version&gt;.tar.gz Example:
lohit-assamese-web-2.5.3.tar.gz

 I did basic testing with
http://pravins.fedorapeople.org/web-fonts/sample-text-woff.html. Looking
forward to see more comments from community of Lohit users.

We are using http://code.google.com/p/sfntly/ tool for generating
.woff and .eot. Thanks to Santhosh for pointing to it.

Special thanks to Parag for Makefile :)

Let me know if any problem in using web formats or improvement possible.

Best Regards,
Pravin Satpute

from their real upstream, and fonts that are maintained tex-side

I wanted to point out that with new texlive in F18+
we have some duplication of fonts src packages: eg

ctan-cm-lgc-fonts and texlive-cm-lgc (subpackage) [1]

ctan-kerkis-fonts and texlive-kerkis (subpackage)

I have communicated with Jindrich about this over bugzilla
and for now I removed the tex subpackages from the ctan-*-fonts
packages and he obsoleted the old tex-* subpackages from
the texlive subpackages.

That is all well and good but it still seems wrong to be
duplicating fonts sources over different src packages.
Maybe texlive needs to start getting into the business of
also generating fedora fonts packages? Or some other way
could be found to improve this. Or do we just treat texlive
as an exception?

Hi,

I see we have 36-no-bitmap-fedora.conf to disable/enable the
embedded bitmap font for certain fonts. it looks like a bit
laognauge specific configuration. so I think it would makes
sense if we use the condition of checking the language
instead of the speicfic fonts? so we don't need to add extra
fonts when it's available.

any comments?

<pre>
There is a subtle difference here. SIL OFL says:

No Modified Version of the Font Software may use the Reserved Font
Name(s) unless explicit written permission is granted by the
 corresponding Copyright Holder.

I read this as meaning that if a Modified Version uses the RFN, the
person exercising the copyright permissions granted by the SIL OFL
loses their copyright license.

Whereas without the RFN designation, the font licensor may still have
trademark ownership of the font name, and some modifications might
infringe the trademark. But that's true of software names too. Anyway,
free software licenses do fine without RFN-style clauses (I can only
think of a few, rarely used licenses that have something like them).

As previously noted I do not agree that removal of RFN is made
meaningless merely by inclusion of a trademark notice.
