This is my public announcement that I'm leaving OLPC. I have accepted a new
position at Bobo Analytics. My last day with OLPC is the 21st.

At Bobo I'll be working along side with Ed McNierney and Mitch Bradly so it
won't feel too far away from OLPC.

We just turned on the Internet two weeks ago (thx to Anish Mangal and
Kartik Perisetla), but power has been largely missing. The server and
Wi-Fi paraphernalia lives at my uncle's house. The kids miss the
access a lot. So, eventually they pooled money, bought a liter of
Diesel and showed up at my Uncle's house, asking him to run the
generator, so that they could get on the Internet!

What have we done! :-)

If there is an award for most electrons saved while delivering learning to
children globally, you should get it. Your dedication to hyper-efficient
power consumption in the XO continues to effect a significant
differentiator in the product.

But more than product focus, I benefited often from your unwavering
attitude of no-request-is-too-small. Most recently, helping me to work
through testing of the new power plug adapter in Zambia. And over the
years, so many patient and detailed replies to my questions on solar panels.

I suspect we'll cross paths again next I'm in Boston, or if Bobo gets
enough attention to arrange a meeting with my employer.

So I'm not saying goodbye. I want to say that I hope the community
continues to come up with interesting questions and projects at attract
your interest!

Unfortunately even without the DT changes described here, old firmware
versions already will not be able to boot new/upstream kernels, once
we get to that point. The DT is missing regulator information so the
MMC controller doesn't get powered up. This is the "old firmware, new
kernel" problem.

The DT clock changes described here would also mean that new firmwares
become incompatible with released kernels. This is the "new firmware,
old kernel" problem. I think this will also be unavoidable.

So yes, we are looking at both of those problems.

There are some thoughts and possibilities here:

http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Device_tree_upgrade_considerations
https://lists.ozlabs.org/pipermail/devicetree-discuss/2012-August/019024.html

but no definite, attractive solution. I suspect it is something we are
just going to have to live with.

I think the "old firmware, new kernel" is the most painful of the two
problems. Maybe we can fix that up with a bootwrapper type solution
mentioned in the mail linked to above (a</pre>

does this imply a future flag day, at which time new firmware will be

That is mainly because the wiki instructions are rather old, they were

I've always found my problems to be either:

- invalid partitioning,

- unrepeatable corruption of the partition table or filesystem, or;

- physical wear on the connectors,

- plastic dimensions that prevent full insertion.

I wore out a USB drive, just by downloading new versions of XO-1.0 software

copy-nand complained. I forget the exact error message, but it was obvious
after I compared the bits on the USB drive against the bits on the disk.

Many thanks for the CRC checking part of copy-nand.

I still have the busted USB drive if anybody wants one that is
just-flakey-enough for testing.

The md5sum was OK so I reformatted the USB stick and tried again - and no

G'day David,

The CPU temperature of 54 celcius is a bit on the high side. Please
run the heat spreader test on this unit:

ok test /switches

If the heat spreader does not contact the CPU properly, the
temperature can rise too much during installation. If the temperature
is too high, the CPU can pause, or make mistakes.

Significant gaps, blocks staying gray, are normal, and nothing to
worry about. These blocks don't need to be written, so the .zd file

does not write to them. This saves on downloads.

The error "Wrong expanded data length" means that the file was not
correct on the USB drive, or the USB drive could not be read. The
task was aborted. Things you can try:

* check the file using md5sum, see
 http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Download#Verifying

* try a different USB drive,

* don't use a USB hub,

* disconnect any other USB devices,

* try a different port on the laptop,

* upgrade the firmware; you are using Q3C07, but Q3C08 contains a fix
for USB drives with embedded hubs, and Q3C13 has a fi</pre>

<pre>Hello again,

I wanted to test reinstalling XO-1.5 (2GB) release 11.3.1 from a USB stick,

I downloaded and copied to the stick

os885.zd2

os885.zd2.zsp.fs.zip (and renamed it fs.zip)

following the instructions at
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Release_notes/11.3.1#XO-1.5

It goes into the screen with the green blocks replacing grey, but there are
some significant gaps (blocks stay grey) and finally it stops with the
error:

&lt;buffer&lt; at &gt;1c00000&gt;:4864: Wrong expanded data length

Screenshots attached.

However, after doing this and rebooting, the XO starts up OK (using first
time the lease.sig) and asks for name, colours etc - and although not fully
tested all the Activities seem to be there, wireless is working etc.

So why the error? Anything I should look for in the logs (/var/log)?
