Hi everyone. I wonder if anyone could advise on the following. Firefox
and Thunderbird used to work very well on my Gentoo system. I recently
had to re-install everything from scratch, however and now, neither
Firefox (now known as 'Aurora') nor Thunderbird (now known as
'Earlybird') work with Orca at all. In both programs, Orca only speaks
the title bar, followed by the word 'Inaccessible'.
Apart from this, my Gnome-light desktop appears to be working as it
should. My version of Firefox is 17.0.3. My version of Thunderbird is
also 17.0.3 and my version of Orca is 2.32.1. My Gentoo kernel is
3.7.10 and my system's architecture is x86_64. If you need any more
information to enable you to help, please let me know.

Many thanks for any advice you can offer.

Yours faithfully,

John Robinson

Hi everyone. Apologies if this is a bit off topic, but I can't tell if
the problem I'm having is related to Speakup itself or the way I've
compiled my kernel.

Until very recently, I used Gentoo version 3.3.8 and compiled the
Speakup staging driver as a module. I used this with the Espeak
softsynth and the Espeakup connector. My numeric keypad worked exactly
as it should do under Speakup.

I have now upgraded to Gentoo 3.4.9 and recompiled my kernel. I still
use its Speakup staging driver built as a module, along with Espeak and
Espeakup. My problem now is that, whenever Speakup is running and I
press any key on my numeric keypad, my whole computer freezes. I can't
reboot it with CTRL+ALT+Delete and have to turn it off by holding the
power button in for a few seconds.

I have no idea what is causing this and can find no clues in the Speakup
user guide or the Speakup FAQs. I would very much appreciate any advice
anyone has as to how to get my numeric keypad to work as it should under
Speakup. It works pe

Hello all;

I've been a Gentoo user for awhile, and installed a knew VM, using the
latest available kernel, 3.1.1.

When speakup attempts to install I get

* ERROR: app-accessibility/speakup-3.1.6_p201011120508 failed (setup phase):

Great, ok, so I further look into it, looks like it wants kernel 2.6.36.

This is no longer available, attempt to compile anything less then 2.6.36
I'm told it requires 2.6.36 kernel.

Also, speakup hasn't been updated since around this time last year.

So, thoughts, ideas, suggestions for getting this fixed?

Thanks for any assistance.

Hello,

I installed the stable Gnome 2.32 as found in the current portage tree,
then I followed along the instructions in the accessible login page of
the Orca wiki, but no success. Here are the commands I have echoed at
gnome-terminal, in this order:

su
chsh -s /bin/bash gdm
su - gdm
gconftool-2 --set --type bool /desktop/gnome/interface/accessibility true
gconftool-2 --set --type bool
/desktop/gnome/applications/at/screen_reader_enabled true
exit
chsh -s /sbin/nologin gdm

Then I added the gdm user to the audiio group in /etc/group.

After verifying that Orca was still not speaking, I went to
gnome-terminal again and ran as root gdmsetup, then enabled
accessibility in its respective tab, yet Orca remains silent at gdm. Any
tip please?

Thank you,

First, thanks to the devs for getting this all working! I installed
Gentoo using the live cd from March 8 a couple weeks ago (speakup and
espeakup work!). Had some initial issues (I forgot to put the
filesystem type for /dev/sda5 in /etc/fstab for my root partition!),
but it's been up for about a week now. I tried emerging gnome and
xorg-server a couple days ago, and am having this weird problem. After
I start gnome, I get orca's welcome message, but nothing else. I tried
logging into a console as my normal user, and setting DISPLAY to :0.
When I tried loading orca from there, I got an error saying it
couldn't find or activate the at-spi-registry daemon. So, I tried
starting /usr/libexec/at-spi-registryd manually. It gave me several
assertion errors, and segfaulted. Out of curiosity, I tried starting
at-spi-registryd from my debian filesystem copy. That ran ok (it did
throw a couple errors, but it stayed running), so I started orca. It
came up fine, and that's where I am now. I can start apps from m

Seeking advice on accessibility for low-mobility user

I know a skilled programmer/cryptologist who can no longer use a
keyboard. He has an EyeGaze system (http://www.eyegaze.com/)
but apparently the software that comes with it kind of stinks so
he's getting very frustrated. The method of using EyeGaze to control a
Windows PC via a serial port is supposedly based on a documented
standard, so I think setting it up to control a Linux PC should be doable.

I'm a complete novice in the topic of accessibility, so any
advice that applies to handling low mobility with Free Software
would be much appreciated.

Some specific questions I've turned up so far:

* Anyone have experience with dasher?
Can you configure dasher to handle the whole desktop, including menus?
If so, does that require everything be a gnome app to work properly?

* Does Linux have any support for the standard called GIDEI, short for
General Input Device Emulating Interface? (This is what EyeGaze uses
 for Windows control)
