That's cool. I didn't test what's possible with a jailbreak for the
iPad, I guess I'll test it ASAP.

Btw. there are often threads about Android and Google OS on Linux audio
mailing lists, IIUC it unfortunately is impossible to run jackd on those
systems, while on Apple products it does work.

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/jack-audio-connection-kit/id615485734?mt=8

Not important for everybody, but for Linux audio users it's a pity.

The situation for Android varies from manufacturer and phone product
lines. If you buy a "Nexus" device directly from Google (Play Store) you
will have a device with an unlocked bootloader (or easily unlocked) and
very easy to get root access on and flash new "ROMs" with fastboot.

Oops, to be fair Apple does care and there are ways to protect against
such issues, however, Apple and Microsoft tend to hide such information.

I still recommend Linux and BSD ;).

Btw. what is the situation regarding to a locked system for Android?

I experienced something funny with an iPad I won. It's used as PDF
reader only and not connected to the Internet, but I got an
Apple-ClickandBuy bill. They want 0.89 EUR for nothing.
Some research showed me, that people using it intensively with all kinds
of apps, connected to the Internet, OFTEN get bills for nothing in the
range of 50 to 900 EUR.

Why is it impossible to download zero-priced software, if you don't give
them your bank connection? A rhetorical question ;).

Do research yourself and then decide, if this is a risk you like.

A Déjà vu for me, IIRC this happens for the second time to me. I don't
care, since it's more expensive to take steps for less than 1 EUR, than
to ignore it. But wait, there's one step to do, to ensure that I never
ever get a bill in a range between 50 to 900 EUR.

When you say that the system can not boot, what does it do instead? Does
it give a bootloader-error or a Windows Bluescreen? I would expect it to
show a Bluescreen because that is what Windows usually does when a lot
of hardware (real -&amp;gt; vbox =&amp;gt; all hardware) has changed. I once tried to
do the opposite: Make a real Windows out of a virtual one and it failed
with a Bluescreen which I expected. I wanted to use the Windows-Setup CD
to "repair" the installation but unfortunately the setup did not
recognize the hard drive. You might also try what happens when you use a
Windows-Setup CD in "repair" mode.

I tried to restore a backup made with partimage to restore in VBox. I
tried all kinds of partition layouts, restored the MBR, or just the
bootstrap code area, set the boot flag (when needed), recovered with
sfdsk, repaired etc.pp., but no chance, I can't boot the restored backup
with VBox.

The only difference is, that the real XP is installed on sdb1, but it
was installed with sda disconnected, so when doing the install, sdb1
quasi was sda1 and the GRUB chainloader fakes that drive 2 is drive 1.

For the restored backup there is no GRUB and just one drive, so it's on
sda1, but IMO this shouldn't matter.

You might already have all the tools needed: I have read about restoring
partition tables from whole-disk images as well as using a simple
command to dump the partition table. When I searched for it now, I found
http://linuxpoison.blogspot.tw/2008/02/howto-take-backup-of-partition-table.html
That page suggests you to use # sfdisk -d /dev/sdX to backup a partition
table which could then be restored with sfdisk again. However, I have
never tried that.

Yes, AFAIK bs should improve performance only.

Is it possible to restore on a different partition-layout using another
tool, e.g. clonezilla?

As far as I know, bs could only improve performace but is not strictly
necessary. The problem is: To restore the backup you need the exactly
same partition-layout and (important for Windows) the Hardware (or even
AHCI vs. IDE mode with SATA drives) may not be changed. If you plan to
restore on the same hardware (except for the hard drive) and connect the
hard drive to the same port having restored the partition layout it
should be ok.

That's a OT story. I did this a long time ago. RME is willing to help
ALSA developers, but I don't get response from the ALSA developers.
Perhaps a personal aversion against me by the ALSA guys, perhaps just an
issue regarding to "short of time" or both ;D.

Perhaps I should call a tool by my backup script, e.g. clonezilla by
CLI, but I had dd in mind. I'm just unsure, if it does work to dd the
NTFS partition to a another partition, NTFS or ext, with another size,
but still with enough (more) space and I'm not sure how to use options
such as "bs" and "count".

That's a valid reason.

Most probably the driver. As a customer you could try writing to the
chipset makers to contribute to the Linux driver.

As far as I recall Windows is difficult (impossible?) to backup
file-based. I would rather suggest you use one of the partition cloning
tools (CloneZilla, PartImage, dd(rescue), etc.) and just backup the
entire partition.

    <description>&lt;pre&gt;Hi :)

to test hardware that does cause issues on my Linux, I decided to
install a Windows, to ensure that the hardware isn't broken, since it's
still within the warranty period.

FWIW it's a RME HDSPe AIO sound card and the abilities and the sound
quality are amazing when using Windows, I just made a short test, but
the card already is a complete other, much better card with Windows.
It's not only that there are more features, but also the sound quality
and latency is better.

I don't switch to Windows, I need Linux software, that isn't available
for Windows and I've got issues to handle Windows, but I'll collect as
much information as possible, to find out what's different on Windows.
Since it's a PITA to set up the Windows I need, I'll make backups of it,
when I backup my Linux.

Nope, not the original series, I started with TNG. I might have watched
the Wrath of Khan on VHS, not sure.

Independence Day, the only redeeming factor was Will Smith, the story
was sort of meh.

Haven't read that article, yet, or this one:
http://science.slashdot.org/story/13/04/26/1834226/why-well-never-meet-aliens
completely.

The original Star Trek? Have you seen of those 1950(?)s movies, were an
alien was a slow moving big hairy thing making strange noises coming to
eat us? Mmmm, then again, Independence Day, is probably not that
different in the idea, just that our technology has changed for making
movies.
