I wanted to send a mail along those lines, and I'll address those three
questions at once:

We don't have a formal policy document for the selection process, as it is very
simple. We have done things that way for a few years now, and it has worked
well so we keep the same process:

Admins ask the mentors to select the best student application for each project
they have proposed. If they aren't really happy with how their applications
turned out, they should tell us so, and we'll drop the project from the "pool".

The GSoC Mentoring guide gives some good insight on what you should check for
when selecting a student:
http://en.flossmanuals.net/GSoCMentoring/selecting-a-student/

Once mentors have given us their shortlists, we have a pool of students we want
to get on board. Google assigns us a number of project slots to fill in. If
there are enough slots for all the students, we are done, and we will give back

Hi,

This is the first year I volunteer to support Debian's GSoC and OPW
programs, so I don't know all the details about how people like to do things

Now that we have applications, can anybody comment on some of the following:

- is there any policy document (from the Debian admins, not Google)
describing the process for selection of projects and students?

- are there specific criteria that need to be rated or ranked when
reviewing the applications?

- what roles and responsibilities do the prospective mentors take in the
final decision process? E.g. do the mentors need to inform Debian's SoC
admins of their preferred student, or give a rating to each student, or
something else?

- I understand the requirement for multiple mentors: do they all need to
be registered in Melange? Some people are not keen to create Google
accounts. Is it OK to have just one mentor per project in Melange, and
others listed on the Debian wiki?

Regards,

Daniel

<pre>Howdy GSoCers,

Summary:
- Student application period ends May 3rd at 19:00 UTC
- Students:
    • submit your application to Melange NOW, update the wiki summary
    • you have until May 17th to improve your proposal
- Mentors:
    • slot allocation requests on May 6th, please tell us if you don't want one
    • we want you to rank proposals by May 17th
    • please keep your rankings private to students

We're less than two days away from the end of the student application period.
If you're a student, and if you haven't done so yet, that means that you need
to register to melange and submit your application there NOW. If you're a
mentor, and you have been contacted by students, make sure they have submitted
something to melange and to the wiki.

To make it clear, if you have not submitted anything to melange by the
deadline, you won't be able to participate.

The melange student application deadline is on May 3rd, at 19:00 UTC. To get
that in your timezone, use the "date -d &lt; at &gt;1367607600" command</pre>

I'll be down in DC from the 2ed until the 6th for a yearly event that my

I'll be onlineish, but my spare time will be taken up by social events
with co-workers I don't see all that often; so I'll be much less

My phone is in LDAP (for the -private folks) if I'm urgently needed for
some reason.

As usual, NMU if you need to, ask co-maints if they exist, etc etc.

I'll have my GPG key with me.

Release wheezy without me!

With love,

Although it could help mentors that participate in both programs, I think a
joint calendar would be confusing for students, so I'm not sure if we should
provide it. TBH though, I didn't think the OPW deadline was today before you
pointed it out.

Let's clear the confusion here: for GSoC, all students can (and are even
encouraged to) edit and improve their proposal until the accepted proposals are
chosen.

The first hard deadline for that is May 22nd, for the first deduplication
meeting. The idea is that we want to know, by that date, which students we
really want to have on board. I'll write another mail on the subject of student
ranking later today.

I think it's up to the mentors to draw the line. The only important thing is
that the proposals should really, really be the student's point of view on the
project: they should reword the things that came from the mentor, and make the
proposals their own. Obviously</pre>

I notice that the Summer of Code page on the wiki doesn't mention OPW
anywhere, and even though the application process is similar, the OPW
deadline is only published on the OPW page, whereas the SoC page
publishes the GSoC calendar. Maybe it will be helpful to publish a
joint calendar.

Furthermore, it is not clear what the policy is on wiki edits:

- are female candidates prohibited from updating the wiki after 19:00
UTC today (1 May, the OPW deadline), or can they make further edits and
improvements up to 3 May (the GSoC deadline)?

- are mentors permitted/encouraged to help edit student proposals (e.g.
to improve formatting, fix typos, enforce a similar structure, creating
links to related wiki pages) or must the wiki page be exclusively
completed by the student? I don't think it would be right for a mentor
to write a student's proposal, but there is some scope to make them more
uniform for comparison.

- do coding samples have to be submitted before the deadline, or can
they be submitted during the e</pre>

Hi Catalin,

All projects are potentially available unless the mentor removes it from
the wiki

Debian contributors are volunteers, some of us only respond
intermittently. If you really feel strongly that this is the right
project for you, then I would encourage you to carefully look at the
GSoC student applications from 2012 to see an example of the type of
proposal you need to write - you need to have a complete proposal on the
wiki page before Friday (3 May).

You don't need the mentor to give you a specification, it is quite OK to
propose your own ideas or ideas that you develop from discussions with
the Debian community (e.g. through IRC, local group meetings, ...)

There are also some hints on my blog about what questions you should
answer in your project proposal

It is very beneficial for you to show the GSoC team an example of your
work in an open source project - as you are interested in Android, I
presume you are a Java programmer. A good way to show your work would
be to pick some open source</pre>

Right now, the package names at the beginning of each sentinel entry are
the names of the Debian packages, capitalized. This looks weird for
quite a few package, e.g. if they are an abbreviation and are really
spelled "ABC", not "Abc".

The upstream metadata (http://wiki.debian.org/UpstreamMetadata) has a
field "Name" which could be used instead of the capitalized package
name.

As Andreas Tille is away, it is unclear whether such a change would be
accepted, but it would be a nice small exercise to familiarize yourself
with the code I think.

It depends.

Well, it depends on the amount of hardware they're going to need. If
it's just a VM for deployment with not particularly high requirements,
we can just foot that without much process. If it's some bigger
project, you need to talk to us and we'll work something out.

So basically: If you need something on debian.org, talk to us and we'll
let you know.

That'll depend on the costs. I don't think we should approve projects
that have prohibitive costs and like real world projects, financial
constraints are one of the many one has to take into consideration.

One other thing that comes to mind from the message broker discussion:
should students be encouraged to base their projects on new hardware
requirements (e.g. a new box for running a message broker or some
database or whatever)?

Can the SoC team go to the DSA team or DPL to get provisional budget
approval, e.g. if this student/project is selected, Debian is 100%
committed to buy the hardware (or allocate existing hardware) to run the
student's project?

I don't think students should be deterred from doing projects that
involve new hardware resources, this happens in real world projects all
the time.

But, that being said, I think we need something like this, and no one
else appears to be working on it at the moment. Go on and make it
easily installable and make people interested in it. If there are
architectural problems we can't live with for our needs, we'll still
benefit from your work. Thanks for doing this.

Cheers,

Well, as I understand it, when sender or receiver are not online, there
is simply no message passing. If your concern is about what happens to
the backlog when the consumer comes back online, then I've already
written about that earlier today :-)

Thanks for your input,

Cheers,
