Dear collegues and users!

Yesterday a failure did hit powell.debian.org, the host that is
primarily responsible for building the packages.debian.org website.

Unfortunately, the issue seems to be a bit more difficult to solve
and this results in sort of a static packages.debian.org website that
doesn't receive any updates at the moment.

The Debian System Administration Team (DSA) is working hard on getting
the problem fixed as soon as possible, please do not pester them too
much with queries about when this will happen, it probably will only
delay bringing the service up to speed again.

Thanks for understanding, and sorry for the inconvenience.
Rhonda, for the packages.debian.org Team

announced in [5] but now with confirmed times; DSA-controlled

2013-02-17T10:00Z [10]: moving master.debian.org to a new virtual machine as
previously announced in [9]; DSA-controlled

2013-02-22T11:00Z/19:00Z [2]: man-da outage for re-racking as previously
announced in [6]; DSA-controlled

2013-02-24T15:00Z/18:00Z [7]: ubcece outage for network debugging as previously
announced in [5] but with different date (24rd, not 16th); upstream-controlled

In March, we have one data centre outage (so far):

2013-03-24T07:00Z/15:00Z [8]: man-da outage for power feed [NEW] as announced
by man-da recently to DSA; local power operator is upgrading a transformer;

There are four upcoming scheduled outages that will have not insignificant
impact on Debian infrastructure. These outages are:

2012-03-17T18:00Z/24:00Z [1]: ubcece outage for firmware update as previously

2012-03-22T11:00Z/19:00Z [2]: man-da outage for re-racking as previously

2012-03-24T15:00Z/18:00Z [4]: ubcece outage for network debugging as previously
announced in [5] but with different date (24rd, not 16th); upstream-controlled

Almost all service at these locations will be unavailable during the duration
of the outages.

Given that [4] begins when [3] ends, there may be an overlap when both ubcece
and man-da are unavailable.

<pre>Hi,

we will deploy two UPS's and PDUs at our rack at man-da on February
22nd. Since this will require re-racking some gear we expect a downtime
of most, if not all, of our servers during that day starting at 1100Z.

The new hardware has been generously donated by Eaton Power. Thanks!

A number of services, like www.debian.org and central DNS, are location
redundant, so man-da going away will not make the service unavailable to
users. Some infrastructure, such as lists.debian.org, wiki.debian.org
or db.debian.org, is only available at this location and might,
therefore, not work during the above timeframe.

master.debian.org, now roughly 8y old - is starting to show it's age.

Before we start losing data (we already lost one disk), DSA is moving
master's services to a new machine. The new machine is already setup,
but not all the data has been moved. DSA will do a final copy of the
data (YES, we do copy your $HOME) on the 2013-FEB-17 starting at 10:00Z
(UTC).

The new machine is reachable via

Host: new-master.debian.org
IPv4: 82.195.75.110
IPv6: 2001:41b8:202:deb:216:36ff:fe40:4001
SSSFP: 41:01:ae:37:3c:07:14:d6:f8:c5:4a:93:23:d3:e7:43

Once the migration is complete, master.debian.org will be renamed to
old-master.debian.org and new-master.debian.org will be renamed to
master.debian.org. The TTL for these records are already reduced to a
small value to facilitate this renaming.

We will lock down both machines and stop receiving </pre>

UBC-ECE outage 2013-02-16/17

<pre>Hi,

Our hosting partners at the University of British Columbia's Department of
Electrical and Computer Engineering (UBC-ECE) have advised us of maintenance
work being conducted by UBC IT on 2013-02-16 (Saturday, time TBD). This
maintenance is likely to include a network outage that will disrupt
connectivity to Debian infrastructure hosted at UBC-ECE.

To maximize the outage (kidding!), we (DSA) will follow the UBC IT outage on
2013-02-16 with one of our own on 2013-02-17 to perform a (critical - vendor
advised) firmware upgrade of our central storage array at UBC-ECE (an HP MSA
2012i). This firmware upgrade will necessitate halting the majority of Debian
hosts at UBC-ECE.

A number of externally-facing services, such as www.debian.org, are location
redundant and will continue to be available during these planned outages at
UBC-ECE. Many of our internally-facing services, however, are not redundant
and will NOT be available.

A list of hosts/services at UBC-ECE can be found below [1].

New debian-ports archive signing key (2013)

<pre>Hi,

The 2012 debian-ports archive signing key will expire at the end of the
month. I've created the 2013 one, uploaded it to the keyservers, and
uploaded a new version of the debian-ports-archive-keyring package. This
key is already used to sign the archive in addition to the 2012 one,
which will be deactivated at the end of the month.

The key is:
  pub 4096R/2FF7A9F4 2012-12-30 [expires: 2014-01-31]
        Key fingerprint = F192 9868 D640 54EF 3E89 6A96 1C46 6F27 2FF7 A9F4
  uid                  Debian Ports Archive Automatic Signing Key (2013) &lt;ftpmaster-fuu+2JX7BtRD9xtfuZISvw&lt; at &gt;public.gmane.org&gt;

It can be found as well on:

<pre>Hi

as we have found a bug in a part of our archive software that might lead
to remote code execution, we have stopped processing uploads until this
bug is fixed. We expect that to happen pretty soon, though Thursday is
more likely to see a fix than the rest of this Wednesday.

Power tests at ETH (affects rossini.d.n and strauss.d.n only) 29thNov. (today) and on 20th Dec. 2012

<pre>Hi,

there will be two power system tests which will cause power
interruptions in the building where hurd.ethz.ch resides.

hurd.ethz.ch hosts the Xen guests rossini.debian.net (an hurd buildd
AFAIK, _not_ rossini.debian.*org*) and strauss.debian.net (an hurd
porterbox).

The first power interruption will be a short one (a few minutes), as
they're testing the residual-current devices (RCD). It will happen
this late afternoon between 17:00 and 18:00 CET (GMT +0100, i.e. 16:00
and 17:00 UTC).

The second power interruption will be a test of the isolation and take
longer (15 minutes to several hours, depending on the result). It will
happen on 20th of December 2012. Exact time yet to be determined.
