I would suggest not upgrading your machine to AT-SPI 2.7 or 2.8 until Orca 3.8
is uploaded to Debian. Even then, be prepared to downgrade if it still does
not work.

Everything will be upgraded to Gnome 3.8 eventually.

<pre>Hi,

It can be a py-at-spi error. I updated my packages, and Orca does not
talk after reboot. I saw that the pyat-spi package has been updated. I
think that this can be the issue. I only can associate this package
(python-pyatspi, or Python-pyatspi2, I am not in Debian and I did not
remember if it is pyatspi or pyatspi2) with the accessibility because I
did not found another accessibility package in today updates.

Best regards,
Manuel.

<pre>
Have a look in /var/log/apt/history.log to see which packages were upgraded.
Search in particular for AT-SPI and Python-related packages. Then selectively
downgrade those packages by installing versions from stable until the problem
goes away. At that point, if you know which package upgrade caused it, submit
a bug report here or on the bug tracking system.

As so many packages are entering the archive following the release,
unstable/testing are likely to be less reliable than usual for a while, which
is why I am currently very careful about what I upgrade. When it calms down a
little I'll upgrade everything and sort out any problems at that point.

<pre>To whoever might be able to help with.

I will do the best I can to explain what has happened here. This afternoon, I did some upgrades on my perpetual testing system. This is the
production machine for both my girlfriend, who prefers a graphical environment, and myself, who can work in either.

Orca was working this afternoon, both before and after the upgrades. After the system was restarted following the updates, no orca. Sound works in
gnome, all other aspects of the sound system seem to be fine, but, with no access to orca, I am unable to tell you what happens.

Here is the information one gets when attempting to do an orca -t in a console. I am not sure if this happens in gnome-terminal or not, because orca
is not working.

I believe daisy-player does not use madplay to PLAY the sound, it uses
SOX for that IIAC.

<pre>Okay, what's going on didn't originally start out with daisy-player. I
have jessie as part of my sources.list along with wheezy. Earlier today
I tried using madplay to play a radio station stream. Madplay responds
that /dev/dsp doesn't exist and aborts. Figuring with the current
system configuration madplay is a useless program, I had debian delete
it and debian also deleted daisy-player along with madplay since
daisy-player depends on madplay. I can put daisy-player back on the
system and make sure sox also gets installed if it is now missing but
would have liked to have had madplay play that radio stream. As things
stand, a recent debian update removed vlc and all of its components so I
was trying different command line alternatives to vlc. The mpg321
program seems to work for the radio stream but I wanted to compare its
output with that of madplay if I could get that working.

ask this is that daisy-player uses madplay and the current kernels for
debian did not create /dev/dsp when those were built. If this cannot be
done and a kernel rebuild is necessary to have /dev/dsp created, perhaps
filing a bug report against the kernel requesting the dsp device be
created on kernel compile would be helpful to other daisy-player users.
