I see 2 problems with this approach:
1) This would make the situation quite clear, but I'm unsure of the consequences. What has happened to Hedgewars makes me think that some stakeholder may pursue any opportunity of controlling the market through IP strategies. In Wormux case, only the name could really cause such a problem.
2) What is granted at some point might not be forever. In particular, even a written promise without legal basis could become insufficient. And getting such a written and legally binding promise seems improbable to me.

But you're right it would be so much simpler. I'm personally unwilling to do it myself.

    <link>http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.games.wormux.devel/4061</link>
    <description>&lt;pre&gt;Hi,

I have the belief (and some IP right enforcement cases underlining a potential danger) that the project/game name should stop referring to its worms-clone origin. I have tried to list things required for that (imo required) transition here:
http://www.wormux.org/phpboost/wiki/name-transition

This is both a dangerous thing to do, and a potential opportunity. A dangerous thing because transitions always incur the risk of loosing something, an opportunity because the change and required actions may bring new attention to our project.

This shall coincide with several things that, if debatable, should be split off to their own discussion thread:
- numbering change (a long-standing discussion); among those consulted, year.month was the preferred format
- release of the new version, including Android support; it will be delayed by the transition

Well, what do you think about it? Anyone volunteering for some of the tasks?

Best regards,
Christophe

While I don't know much about ppas, the above page seems to list 0.9.2
as available for Lucid. The Wormux project only supports the latest
release, due to for instance the network changes making older versions
unlikely to be played and so on. So a major difference if using that ppa
(highly recommended) is that any bug will have to be submitted upstream

In fact I think it's trickier. The test rect for body is always the same
(see their definition in data/body/movements.xml); this can be verified
when moving: the rectangle doesn't change when walking. However, it's
probably true for other sprites.

However, this is still not the rectangle used for display. MustBeDrawn
tests for Rectanglei(GetPosition(), GetSize()) which is yet different
from GetTestRect value.

And anyway, whatever we think, this has to be checked to make sure we
are taking our wishes for granted.

At least the MeterDistance computation is correct.
For the bitshifting of &amp;gt;&amp;gt;1 instead of /2, it's a pity that it is needed,
but we are the only one to know that width/height are in fact unsigned.

Let's apply some of it then.

When a character changes its animation (see Character::SetMovement or
Character::SetMovementOnce), it calls :

uint l,r,t,b;
body-&amp;gt;GetTestRect(l,r,t,b);
SetTestRect(l,r,t,b);

SetTestRect is a method from PhysicalObj.

So, the physic is directly relying on the body's internal state.

*That means that we must be very careful about such optimization because
it may break consistent state in network game.*

For this optimisation to be ok, we must be sure, that when we change the
movement, at least, body internal state is recomputed. And we must be
sure also, that when characters will be displayed on all computers, it
will be synchronized, else, it may create some big problems, when a
character is shooting for instance. (The shoot will be different
depending each frame of the animation is displayed), and yes, you can
shoot with an invisible player (but MustBeDraw returns always true for
the ActiveCharacter).

src/character/character.cpp:
This change is not in finished form, but just to test the effect if
FootsInVacuum wasn't calculated two times for every cycle. Gain is
very noticeable. To finish it, FootsInVacuum result should be saved
and served until next frame or tick.

src/character/body.cpp:
Here we don't animate if character is not visible. Gain is very
noticeable, but might cause some problems with animations. Apparently
MustBeDrawn isn't perfectly good to detect if character is visible or
not.

member-&amp;gt;RefreshSprite() is limited in same way and gain is also good.
Not sure about side effects.

src/object/physical_obj.h/cpp
Discussed with Kurosu on IRC. MeterDistance is surprisingly costly function.

 src/graphic/sprite.cpp:
This was biggest user of software division after MeterDistance and it
save a few cycles.

Here is a call graph, nodes with &amp;gt;3.0% of time are shown

There are quite a few places where something is divided by
