Good idea about updating instructions for new members.
After the last problem, I modified the "Welcome" email sent to new members.

See it here:
http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/sb-boardgamers/files/
Welcome

However, the old passes should not be used.
- They violate the "low" on the radar principle
- No one is asking for them
- They will confuse guards they are presented to, leading to them asking questions to their superiors, possibly leading to trouble.

I didn't delete the files, but they are no longer sent to new members.

Regards,
John

Better to err on the side of caution in the first email to people coming in new, right?
Also, the email was long enough. My aim was to cover all the trouble items and not make it too long.

Welcome to the South Bay Boardgamers. Our goal is to provide a fun, friendly venue for people to play games with each other -- mostly German-style or "euro" games since 2004. To that end, we have:

o A large gaming area (the Yahoo! cafeteria)
o A wide variety of games brought every Monday (feel free to bring your own!)
o A large pool of people -- you can go for months playing with different people each week.

Even if you've never tried these designer boardgames before, it doesn't take much to learn them. In fact, they stress simple rules and play so that even a beginner can have a decent chance against experienced players. We hope you will come and check us out if you are near the Sunnyvale area!

One thing to be aware of is that this group is allowed to use the Yahoo facility by the members being good citiz

Well, don't go to the guard shack and ask for directions, or ask any member of security "where the games are"
I think you *can* ask someone (not from security) where the cafeteria is, or where is building C?
Also, please don't eat the free food, as you are not an employee.

This info should probably be put in our FAQ sent out to new members.
We'd need a moderator to do that. Hmm, who is that? ;)

Hi Boardgamers,

Andy and I just met with Yahoo! Security and it wasn't at all what I
expected.

The problem had nothing to do with tailgating (you're off the hook,
John). The problem was that a first time gamer showed up who was not a
Yahoo! and didn't know where to go. He asked Security for help. They
were put into the awkward position of having to either turn the guy away
or let him in unescorted. That time they decided to be generous and let
him in. Security informed me, however, that going forward this won't be
the case. Someone in that position will be turned away.

So, from now on if you invite someone to SBB, please meet him/her
outside of URL's and show him/her in yourself. Also, tell them the
rules such as not eating the free food, etc. The less involvement with
Security the better. We really don't want to annoy them. Our continued
use of URL's depends on their good will.

Furthermore we could use more Yahoo! points of contact for when
questions arise with Security. They have

The person referred to is probably me. I wouldn't say I snuck in, but I did follow someone in while I was carrying a stack of games. What is going to qualify as being "let in by someone"? In the future, to people have to wait outside until an employee member of this group officially says "come in", or something else? Can a non-player who knows who we are let us in?

I probably arrived at about 6:30. Other people drift in over the next hour (or some nights much more than that) before we get an employee-player who joins us.

The concern he raised was that the first person there snuck in behind
someone else entering the building, implying that they are okay with
non-Yahoo! employees being there if they are let in by someone and don't go

I can't guarantee I will be there early enough to let people in every week,
though.

From time to time someone in Yahoo! security suddenly becomes aware of
SBB meeting in the Yahoo! cafeteria and has to discuss it with us. That
has happened again.

Are there any Yahoo!s who regularly attend the SBB gaming sessions on
Monday nights still. It's shameful, but I haven't made it down there
for a long time.
